I Just Tried A Durian Again...

Sat Mar 21, 2009 8:57 pm

And I'm afraid I'll never get this test out of my mouth. As soon as I ordered it in the restaurant the entire place started to stink, which I knew would happen. But the taste of garlic and feet was a little too much. My friend said it best, "I think they're made out of dead people." Well I wanted to try it again since it'd been about 10 years since I last tried one, fresh off the tree in Malaysia.

And now I want to boil my mouth parts.  vomit

Make that "taste", not "test".

Lol, being a kid born in Australia and parents from Malaysia, I must say I hate it too. The smell is just terrible. But all my relatives in Malaysia seem to love it. I must say I like the shape with the spikes, that part is awesome, but once you open it nope, I'll move away.

I've never tried one, but if they taste anything like they smell, i am very glad of that fact.

It's amazing how people like this "fruit." It literally smells like old gym shoes. Literally.

I tried it once. I can best describe it as being like vanilla pudding with onion flavor.

Well, Andrew Zimmern hates it but Anthony Bourdain loves it. People loves durian like Australian loves Vegemite. Big grin

It isn't called "The King of Fruits" for no reason.  Smile

Only if you died in your gym shoes - some time ago!

And that, my friend, is why I believe in a republic!

I don't like Vegemite (but then, I don't like tomato sauce on my meat pies or beetroot on my hamburgers, so I'm unAustralian!).

I can't understand how my Malaysian wife can be so sensitive to bad smells yet love durian.

The biggest flower in the world comes from SE Asia and smell of rotten meat. I dare someone to give it to their love for Valentine's day.

I tasted some caramel in it. I ate durian fruits and durian waffles in the Philippines and actually liked them.

You'll have to try one on a train in Singapore, next...

Durian tastes nice.
The flavour grows on you.
The smell isn't that bad. You smell it a few times and then you don't even think about it. I used to eat a lot of Durian when I was working in Malaysia and Brunei.
I love Duriancake, great mix of flavours.

The worst smell I have ever come across was when some Swedish colleagues of mine gave me something they called surstromming. It was some fermented herring that had been kept in the same box for about a year. The smell was so bad I couldn't even be in the same house. I just wanted to vomit. Indescribable.
It was recommended to open it under water but the swedes just laughed and drank more aquavit. Nutters hehe.

I like the taste, I have never tried to open the fruit though, just bought the fresh slices in the Bangkok supermarket.

So you have met surstromming, meaning 'sour herring' in English. I think a can of sour herring is more like a weapon, full of smelling gas ready to spurt on you...  ill  The Icelanders have something similar called 'Hákarl', fermented shark.
