Gosh, if we knew Larry had so many well wishers, we could have circulated a card, then hired a suitably chubby (and unshaven!) "entertainer" to present our card to him, along with providing the kind of "entertainment" a man wants on his birthday, if you know what I mean!  Smile

If we weren't in a global economic recession, I am sure that would be a very hot seller.
If we didn't have so many treehuggers having influence in Washington, we'd could have had a modern version of the 1976 Cadillac Eldorado convertible or a modern version of the large Lincoln Continentals of the 1970s.
The 2004 Lincoln Continental concept was pretty darn close.
Too bad the federally mandated CAFE standards made that next to impossible.

Quoting Superfly (Reply 37):
The lsit goes on and on about all the great things of the 1970s.

Having come of age in the 70s, I have a lot of mixed feelings about that decade.

The 60s were the true "sex and drugs and rock and roll" decade. By the 70s, most had moved on to hard drugs and then on to rehab. In a lot of ways, the 70s was the bad hangover after the big party of the 60s.

The 60s were the era when the supergroups formed, the 70s where when they all broke up (The Beatles, The Who, Led Zepplin, Yes, etc).

It wasn't all bad, though. People were a lot less up tight then they were in those righteous days of the Reagan era. A lot of the stuff that gets shown as comedy in "That 70s Show" really happened. I had a lot of smoke-filled evenings in friend's basements. My high school had a "smoking area" since one could buy tobacco at 16, but most of the stuff being smoked out there wasn't tobacco, and no one cared. I was too goal-oriented to get wasted during school, but many weren't.

Lots of great TV comedy: All in the Family, M*A*S*H, the original Saturday Night Live, Mork and Mindy, etc.

That decade also broght us the PDP-11, one of the sweetest computers ever. Too bad those idiots at Intel with their shitty instruction set weren't paying attention!

Quoting Superfly (Reply 37):
Although, women look much better today than in the 1970s.

I'm not so sure about that. Women are a lot more knowledgeable and prepared for sex these days. Back then they were more wholesome and innocent and curious, so when you scored, you felt like you really accomplished something. Well, maybe not the first few times till you broke them in, then they were hell on wheels! No one knew of AIDS back then, most were happy to take the pill!  Smile

Led Zepplin broke up in 1980 and Yes is still performing today.
Their biggest hits were in the 1980s.
Granted, a more pop-oriented Yes in the 1980s.

Details, details!  Smile

It just felt to me that a lot of things that came into being in the 60s died in the 70s or early 80s.

Add to the list Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett leaving Genesis Sad

Quoting Superfly (Reply 43):
Yes is still performing today

I know. I was very glad to see them do "Close to the Edge" live twice as well as "And You and I" once during their 35th anniversary tour, something I had wanted to see since the 70s. As for the current lineup without Ric Wakeman and Jon Anderson, well, it's not inspiring enough for me to lay down my cash.

On the other hand, I just got tickets to see "Three Friends", three former members of "Gentle Giant", this fall in Montreal!  Smile

No arguments from me.

I've read members of Gentle Giant resented Kansas, thought they were a rip-off of their style. Personally, i really dig Kansas, at least till they went commercial.

Am more of a prog-head, so would add Emerson Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and early Genesis to the list of great bands who lit up the 70s.

For more pop-oriented stuff, I'd add Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers as a couple of stand outs.

I always thought you were older until I opened your profile.
Seeing that your are 16-20, I'd buy the booze for you and bring the girls over to my place.

Aw, heck, come up here! There are some hot women here! Just get a good hotel (like the Fairmont Palliser), go to a couple bars/clubs, and you're set!

Quoting Revelation (Reply 44):
Am more of a prog-head

Ever listen to the band U.K.?
It's Bill Bruford, Allan Holdsworth, John Wetton, Eddie Jobson.
Their firs album from 1978 is incredible!
You have to take 45 minutes out to listen to it uninterrupted.

Quoting Revelation (Reply 44):
For more pop-oriented stuff, I'd add Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers as a couple of stand outs.

Excellent stuff!
Also a huge fan of Chicago.  Cool

Quoting WestJetForLife (Reply 45):
Yes, sir! May 18, 1990!

WOW!  Wow!
We have the same birthday as Pope John Paul II, Perry Como, Rick Wakeman (Yes), Reggie Jackson and some German porn star who's name escapes me at the moment.
Bring back the Concorde

Happy belated birthday Larry.

Did you know yesterday was Sophiemaltese's birthday? She has the longest birthday thread ever on a.net.
