I Totalled My Car

Wed May 27, 2009 7:50 pm

So I didn't see the red light because of the sun on the windshield and ran it. And got T-boned by another car at about 30 MPH.

I'm fine. The car is totalled (well, it's not official, but the frame is slightly warped and the front pax wheel is off-true...you do the math). The car was brand-new, about 8 months old with 4,600 miles on it.

It was a Toyota Prius. The pax airbags went off, protecting my boyfriend who was in the car with me. The frame held, even if it deformed a bit. We're alive. I have a bruise on my left thigh. He slightly cut his hand. Our necks and backs are a bit tight.

And we're alive and whole.

When I get that check, you can bet I'm going right back and buying a new Prius. I called Toyota today to tell them that.

Drive safely, everyone.

Happens to lots of people, thankfully it was at 30MPH not at 60MPH! What was the other car, and how did their occupants fared?

Most importantly, I'm glad you're both OK!  veryhappy

Second, I'd recommend that you check out a Honda Insight or a VW Jetta TDI sedan/wagon instead of purchasing a new Prius. First of all, you're goinna have a very long wait to buy one (unless the dealership somehow has one in current stock). There are 80,000 outstanding orders for the new Prius currently in Japan - and Toyota is rerouting its supply of the model to Japan to meet the demand because they're afraid that buyers won't wait and will buy the cheaper Honda Insight.

One guy in a '90 Nissan Altima. That car's toast. He's actually happy because my insurance company will probably give him more money than he would have gotten for selling the car. And he's a bit shook up, but fine.

I'll get in touch with him later and offer to cover his out-of-pocket expenses once this blows over.

Had a similar accident (albeit NOT my fault  Wink) with going from your desciption similar damage. The car was deemed a write-off, not much of a surprise with a 15 y/o Golf. It was sold to a company specializing in damaged cars, and has been fully repaired. Since your car is much newer it might not be written of just yet. Of course it is hard to tell without seeing pictures so yours might be in worse state then mine was.

Good to hear you and everyone else walked out without problems. You can expect some muscle aches the next two or three days. In particular the neck region.

Why you want to get a vehicle history report (CarFax, whatever) whenever you buy a car!

IIRC, sales of hybrids (not just the Prius) in the U.S. leveled off and dropped shortly after last year's price spike ended. If some of the early 2010 models haven't been delivered to dealerships yet, Doc might be able to get a new 2009 left-over as his replacement.

Indeed! Though I suspect this car will be exported to Eastern Europe or Africa or somewhere. Nowadays older cars get a tax benefit for scrapping so selling it in NL is not going to be that lucrative anymore.

Actually polarized lenses can make dashboard instrumentation hard to read. They also tend to "see through" water. Most guys (myself included) don't fly with em.

I wouldn't write the car off just yet. If the damage to the vehicle is less than about 75% of the new price, less junk salvage value, the insurance company will likely repair the car. Frames can be straightened, etc.

Many people are surprised because they WANT the car to be written off and not repaired so that they get a brand new car again. That doesn't always happen.

Wait till the adjusters get through before you jump to conclusions.

I've never had problems in a car with polarized lenses. I mean heck 99% of all cars out there use steam gauges. In planes yes, but not cars. In fact, I think it safer for many reasons to use polarized lenses in a car, unlike planes, but that's just me.

Here in San Francisco where me in DocLightning lives, our city is full of mis-guided idiots that 'think' they're environmentalist yet refuse to buy a diesel. Therefore, diesel stations are not that common. I'd say about only 1 & 4 stations here in San Francisco stock diesel.

Glad you are doing okay, not a good feeling at times thinking about it, but don't let it get to you. Everyone is okay, that is the most crucial thing. And as you said...

Drive carefully.

RE: I Totalled My Car

Glad you and your boyfriend are ok. Not a good feeling at all and especially with a nice new Prius. I'm really glad to hear that the car handled the impact so well. I haven't been in one, but have wondered how well they would handle a crash.

Feel better!
