Unsuprisingly there's been several mentions of My Immortal by Evanescence, which is pretty emotional, but in my opinion not quite their 'finest' - in an emotional sort of way, I think that title should go to Understanding instead. Deep, beautiful, sad, but still one of my all time favourites.

"You hold the answers deep within your own mind.
Consciously, you've forgotten it.
That's the way the human mind works.
Whenever something is too unpleasant, too shameful for us
to entertain, we reject it.
We erase it from our memories.
But the imprint is always there."

(Can't wash it all away)
(Can't Wish it all away)
(Can't hope it all away)
(Can't cry it all away)

The pain that grips you
The fear that binds you
Releases life in me
In our mutual
Shame we idolize
To blind them from the truth
That finds a way from who we are
Please don't be afraid
When the darkness fades away
The dawn will break the silence
Screaming in our hearts
My love for you still grows
This I do for you
Before I try to fight the truth my final time

"We're supposed to try and be real.
And I feel alone, and we're not together. And that is real."

Can't wash it all away
Can't wish it all away
Can't cry it all away
Can't scratch it all away

Lying beside you
Listening to you breathe
The life that flows inside of you
Burns inside of me
Hold and speak to me
Of love without a sound
Tell me you will live through this
And I will die for you
Cast me not away
Say you'll be with me
For I know I cannot
Bear it all alone

"You're not alone, honey."
"Never... Never."

Can't fight it all away
Can't hope it all away
Can't scream it all away
It just won't fade away, No,no, no ,no.

Can't wash it all away
Can't wish it all away
Can't cry it all away
Can't scratch it all away

(Can't fight it all away)
(Can't hope it all away)
Can't scream it all away
Ooh, it all away
Ooh, it all away
(It all away)
"But the imprint is always there. Nothing is ever really forgotten."
"Because I'm dying too."
"Because I'm dying too."
"Because I'm dying too."
"Because I'm dying too."
"Because I'm dying too."

Frank Sinatra - What Now My Love?

What now my love?
Now that you've left me
How can I live, live through another day?
Watching my dreams turn into ashes
And my hopes turn into bits of grey
Once I could see,
Once I could feel
Now I am numb, I've become unreal
I've walked the night without a goal
Stripped of my heart, my soul.

What now my love?
Now that it's over
I feel the world, it's falling in on me!
Here come the stars tumbling around me
There's the sky where the sea should be!
What now my love?
Now that you're gone?
I'd be a fool to go on and on
No one would care, no one would cry
If I should live, if I should live or die

What now my love?
Now there is nothing
Only my last, my last goodbye.

Quoting TSS (Reply 97):
Indeed... it's a supremely depressing song. Personally, I've never bought into the "drug references" accusation in Puff the Magic Dragon... it's about the pain and loss of growing up. If you want thinly-veiled (or to my mind, pretty straightforward) drug references, try reading the lyrics to Along Comes Mary by The Association some time. Apparently the uptight folks in the sixties were aware that some popular music contained drug references, but they were utterly clueless as to which songs did and which songs didn't on an individual basis.

quadruple  checkmark  to that!

EVERYONE can relate to Puff the Magic Dragon for the reason which you've already stated. We all go through the pain and loss of growing up and letting go of our childhood.

You know another false drug reference? How about Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds by the Beatles? Julien drew a picture for his dad (John Lennon) while at school and he called it Lucy In The Sky with Diamonds. That was the inspiration for the song...

To say that there is a drug reference in Puff the Magic Dragon, tho, is just beyond sad...

Bruise easily by Natasha Bedingfield

My skin is like a map, of where my heart has been
And I can't hide the marks, but it's not a negative thing
So I let down my guard, drop my defences, down by my clothes
I'm learning to fall, with no safety net, to cushion the blow

I bruise easily, so be gentle when you handle me
There's a mark you leave, like a love heart, carved on a tree
I bruise easily, can't scratch the surface without moving me
Underneath I bruise easily, I bruise easily

I've found your finger prints on a glass of wine
Do you know you're leaving them all over this heart of mine too
But if I never take this leap of faith I'll never know
So I'm learning to fall with no safety net to cushion the blow

I bruise easily, so be gentle when you handle me
There's a mark you leave, like a love heart carved on a tree
I bruise easily, can't scratch the surface without moving me
Underneath I bruise easily, I bruise easily

Anyone who, can touch you, can hurt you, or heal you
Anyone who, can reach you, can love you, or leave you

So be gentle
So be gentle
So be gentle
So be gentle

I bruise easily, so be gentle when you handle me
There's a mark you leave, like a love heart, carved on a tree
I bruise easily, can't scratch the surface without moving me
Underneath I bruise easily,

I bruise easily, so be gentle when you handle me
There's a mark you leave, like a love heart, carved on a tree
I bruise easily, can't scratch the surface without moving me
Underneath I bruise easily, I bruise easily

I bruise easily
I bruise easily

This thread has all beautiful sad songs...

This is my choice.
This one is going to no other than Concorde, the only True Love of my life.

Concordes no longer fly but the love I have for them remains intact.

Once I loved...

A song from Antonio Carlos Jobim
sung here by the great lady of Jazz Shirley Horn

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnB7lCvE1s4

Once I loved
And I gave so much love to this love you were the world to me
Once I cried
At the thought I was foolish and proud and let you say goodbye

And then one day
From my infinite sadness you came and brought me love again
Now I know
That no matter whatever befalls I'll never let you go
I will hold you close, make you stay
Because love is the saddest thing when it goes away

Love is the saddest thing when it goes away

That is a great song and one of her more obscure ones. I have the quadraphonic 8track tape Killing Me Softly which has the song Jesse.
She performed for free here in San Francisco at Stern Grove two weeks ago.

Another sad, down-in-the-dumps song I love...

Radiohead - Creep

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxpblnsJEWM

When you were here before,
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel,
Your skin makes me cry

You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You're so fuckin' special

But I'm a creep,
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here

I don't care if it hurts,
I wanna have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul

I want you to notice
when I'm not around
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here, ohhhh, ohhhh

She's running out again
She's running out
She run run run run...
run... run...

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep,
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here

I don't belong here...
Bad spellers of the world... UNTIE!

Here's one of the greatest song, I think, every put out, by one of the greatest artists in Rock History, from an incredibly sad, powerful and Grammy-winning Movie

Philadelpha
Bruce Spingsteen

I was bruised and battered and I couldnt tell
What I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
I saw my reflection in a window I didnt know
My own face
Oh brother are you gonna leave me
Wastin´away
On the streets of philadelphia

I walked the avenue till my legs felt like stone
I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone
At night I could hear the blood in my veins
Black and whispering as the rain
On the streets of philadelphia

Aint no angel gonna greet me
Its just you and I my friend
My clothes dont fit me no more
I walked a thousand miles
Just to slip the skin

The night has fallen, Im lyinawake
I can feel myself fading away
So receive me brother with your faithless kiss
Or will we leave each other alone like this
On the streets of philadelphia
Work Right, Fly Hard

Here's one I can't BELIEVE I forgot. I'm listining to it right now.

The River
Bruce Springesteen
Listening to the version off of his "Live, 1975-1985" Album

I come from down in the valley
Where mister when you're young
They bring you up to do
Just like your daddy done

Me and Mary, we met in high school
When she was just seventeen
We'd ride down to that valley
To where the fields were green

Wed go down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
Oh down to the river we'd ride

Then I got mary pregnant
And man that was all she wrote
And for my nineteen birthday
I got a union card and a wedding coat
We went down to the courthouse
And the judge put it all to rest
No wedding day smiles no walk down the aisle
No flowers no wedding dress

That night we went down to the river
And into the river we'd dive
On down to the river we did ride

I got a job working construction
For the johnstown company
But lately there aint been much work
On account of the economy
Now all them things that seemed so important
Well mister they vanished right into the air
Now I just act like I dont remember,
And Mary acts like she dont care

But I remember us riding in my brothers car
Her body tan and wet down at the reservoir
At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel every breath she'd take
Now those memories come back to haunt me
They haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it dont come true
Or is it something worse

That sends me
Down to the river
Though I know the river is dry
It sends me down to the river we'd ride

Oh Down to the river, my baby and I
Oh down to the river we ride
Work Right, Fly Hard

I really hate to say this about him considering I agree with him 100% politically and his bold statements in the past in regards to injustices.

Son House's "Death Letter" has made me get embarrassing weepy since my high school days back in the late 70's, (Well it made him sadder way before that)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdgrQoZHnNY

sad songs version 2.0

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds "Where the Wild Roses Grow"

"They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one
As she stared in my eyes and smiled
For her lips were the colour of the roses
They grew down the river, all bloody and wild

When he knocked on my door and entered the room
My trembling subsided in his sure embrace
He would be my first man, and with a careful hand
He wiped the tears that ran down my face

On the second day I brought her a flower
She was more beautiful than any woman I'd seen
I said, 'Do you know where the wild roses grow
So sweet and scarlet and free?'

On the second day he came with a single rose
Said: 'Will you give me your loss and your sorrow?'
I nodded my head, as I laid on the bed
He said, 'If I show you the roses will you follow?'

On the third day he took me to the river
He showed me the roses and we kissed
And the last thing I heard was a muttered word
As he stood smiling above me with a rock in his fist

On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow
And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief
As I kissed her goodbye, I said, 'All beauty must die'
And lent down and planted a rose between her teeth"

IHAP

(BTW has anyone see Eliza recently, I have not heard from her in ages and that makes Zippy even sadder than the song)
Pray hard but pray with care For the tears that you are crying now Are just your answered prayers

Jana, by Killing Joke (album "Pandemonium)

She hears his footsteps, he walks up the path
And when the letter drops her heart beats fast
She picks up the envelope then she turns her face away
She'll check out her results another day
Refusing to accept what they might say "

Jana cry
i've got so much to give
Jana sigh
i've got so much to live
Jana's mind
positive or negative
Jana died

I watch her shiver by the fireside
From time to time she just breaks down and cries
Her cat curled in her lap and she's secure in a place that she calls home
Flicking through postcards and brochures of rome
Dreaming of places that she'd like to go

Her friends bring her soup each day
And she takes an array of bright coloured pills
From a.z.t. to vitamin c but still she wastes away
Forcing down food but still she wastes away

Jana cry
i've got so much to give
Jana sigh
i've got so much to live
Jana cry
jana tested positive
Jana died

"Der Weg" by Herbert Gruenemeyer. A tribute to his wife who died early.

"I Hope You Dance" There's a few versions out there but I actually like the one by Ronan Keating the best.

"Breath Me" by Sia. You can feel her drained emotions when she sings it.

Forgot to add the George Jones classic, "He Stopped Loving Her Today."

He said I'll love you 'til I die
She told him you'll forget in time
As the years went slowly by
She still preyed upon his mind

He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
Dated 1962
He had underlined in red
Every single I love you

I went to see him just today
Oh but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

(Spoken)
You know she came to see him one last time
Oh and we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time he's over her for good

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

Definitely one of my saddest songs.

So now that I'm sad again, going to go listen to some good cheerin' up music: "Snoopy vs. The Red Baron" by The Royal Guardsmen!

Texan
"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."

Puff the Magic Dragon

by Peter, Paul and Mary

When I was really, really young, I heard that song and cried. I really felt for Puff when he was abandoned by Jackie Paper.

My mom would play that over and over and laugh when I cried. I've had abandonment issues since- I even cry now I hear the song.

All references to drugs and stuff is completely lost on me because of my initial association when I was all of three or four.

Yup- I'm playing it right now to see if I still cry. I do.

When my Mom was a little girl, my grandfather used to make her sing it when company came over. It was always a song that could bring her to tears thinking about her Dad, and to be honest, it's now a song that brings me to tears thinking about my Mom.

Here it is on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57tK6aQS_H0

"They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
Oh, I of course replied
Something here inside cannot be denied

They said someday you'll find
All who love are blind
Oh, when your heart's on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes

So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away
I am without my love

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I can not hide
Oh, so I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes "

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet:
Ben Folds Five › Brick

I hadn't heard it in a looooong time and then I've heard it twice in the last couple of days. Crazy.
I lift things up and put them down.

Bruce Springsteen

Streets of Philadelphia

from LyricWiki

I was bruised and battered and I couldn't feel what I felt
I was unrecognizable to myself
I saw my reflection in a window
I didn't know my own face
Oh brother are you gonna leave me
Wastin' away
On the streets of Philadelphia

I walked the avenue till my legs felt like stone
I heard voices vanished and gone
At night I could hear the blood in my veins
Just as black and whispering as the rain
On the streets of Philadelphia

Ain't no angel gonna greet me
It's just you and I my friend
And my clothes don't fit me no more
I walked a thousand miles
Just to slip this skin

The night has fallen, I'm lyin' awake
I can feel myself fading away
So receive me brother with your faithless kiss
Or will we leave each other alone like this
On the streets of Philadelphia

A close one is Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge
