Lets get Anet sentimental for a bit.

I was looking through my old posts through my profile, and one topic that I remember the most was this one... SN Pilot And His Dog! (by SUDDEN Jan 10 2002 in Civil Aviation)

It's actually a great, and true, story, and also funny cause there were some people who didn't believe me.

This pilot was a great character to be around, and during their turnarounds he was always very friendly and relaxed.

I was working at GOT airport while all this took place.

You have any topics from "back then" that kind of comes to mind?

Great thread topic!

I realize I'm dating myself on this site and while I never actively participated them, I remember the lengthy string of TWFirst threads that were active in the non-aviation forum when it was first launched. There was a lot of turmoil about the site it seemed, and users would rant about whatever it was that was on their minds--usually unrelated to airliners.net. Every time I opened the then-current thread, the thread had changed and taken on new meaning. Any formerly active TWFirst users still around?

I'm pulling a sucker here, but the 9/11 threads also stand out as we were interested not only in the big events, but also the aviation details. To us, it did in fact matter whether it was an AA 767 or a US 737(which i believe was the initial immediate report). I remember a year or two later, the user EGGD(still around?) did some investigatory work and found users whose most-recent activity had been either on or shortly before that date. My memory is extremely fuzzy on this matter, but I think we came to some definite conclusions that certain a.netters died in the related events.

I think over the past 9.5 years here that I've been active(yep, since '99 Wink

), its been a wonder of amazement to see where commercial aviation has been and where its going. I remember the threads before the A380 had been named "A380" and was still being referred to as "A3XX" and people wondering if airbus really was going to build this massive thing. I think we know the answer now.

Indeed,

The 9/11 threads were something that caught everybody, and when I first heard of it I actually went to Anet to check it out. There was a photo of the first impact, and if my memory serves me correct, anetters thought initially that it was a Cessna.

Many members from "back then" have left, or had to leave Anet as they used the freedom of speech beyond what was allowed on here. Wink

That said, some of them were actually very talented and sure knew their stuff in the Tech forum for example. Good people if you knew how to get around with them, and not take them too serious when they challenged you to engage in a flame war. Big grin

One I remember a lot and miss seeing what Iberia A319 in MIA? Or Iberia DC-9 in MIA? Those came about once a month. Now once in a while you will see AF A320 in MIA? but its just not the same.

I remember a user ILUVBOI? Something with BOI in his user name and he had some crazy post. For someone reason I am thinking something about a Sheep or Goat but I think thats way off. I going to have to search.

Personally for me, it's one I started the day my best friend killed herself. But for general subjects, Number One has to be 9/11. When the news media webpages were clogged, slow, and frozen, A.net was the place to read up. And it still takes you back reading thru it.

I tried to search for it but couldn't find it (this was probably from when I was still trolling the site and hadn't signed up yet)... but does anyone remember the thread where some guy posted a video of an Air Canada flight's aborted takeoff that he was on, filled with all sorts of melodramatic, one-step-away-from-death commentary, and got completely destroyed and laughed off Anet? It was like this really bad train wreck where you just can't turn away. I always loved that one.

I don't think I believe the kid that crashed that light aircraft in TPA did have muliple a.net accounts. There was a user "MD80" or something like that that made a thread asking if the WTC could withstand the impact of a 767 this was like almost a year to the day before 9/11. I believe the FBI would have come around to have a few words with him soon after.

MD90 is still around here somewhere and yes the FBI did have a few words with him. There was a thread about that ordeal or at least a mention of it in a somewhat related thread.

Thanks Ihadapheo, that's the guy I was thinking about.
It was indeed a sad story all together.
This walk down memory lane brings back fun and amusing stuff, as well as less fun stuff.

So Johan, now when you are mortal member (almost) as the rest of us, any special topics that you remember for whatever reason?

All the stories from Skipper747 was also fun reading. A very humble guy with tons of knowledge. Many members, me included, missed him after he left. Not sure if anyone of you here also got the email he sent out before he left permanently? I know he sent it to lots of members.

Yes, they did question him. IIRC, MD90 was the one who went to the FBI on his own to cover his own ass, which was wise to do, before it got him into hot, hot, HOT water. He was then cleared of any wrongdoing and was not a subject of any 9/11-related investigations.
