Why Are There So Many Mice At London Tube Stn(s)?

Sun Aug 09, 2009 1:57 pm

Why are there so many mices at London Tube stations? Everytime I go I see heaps except in December 2008 which surprisingly London Tubes were very clean and I saw no mouse at all.

New York City subway isn't nearly as bad. Hong Kong and Singapore underground=spotless+very clean and trust me if anyone sees mices around or even flies/cockroaches it will definitely be on front page.

Mices, isn't that what Elmer Fudd or another cartoon character called them?

They are mice, those that you may see looking down from the platform anyway.

Quite a lot a half eaten fast food does end up dumped there.
A few years there was a documentary on those who in the early hours of the morning, clean up the stations and adjoining tunnels.
The amount of stuff they collected, including large bundles of accumulated human hair.

That's nothing. I was at Fordham train station in new york a few years ago and I saw the biggest freaking rat I had ever seen. It looked like a full size racoon with a tail about 16" long. This thing was horrible. New York has to be the rat mecca of the world.

Well it's the oldest underground system in the world so there's probably a well established network of "mouse holes" for them to go in and out of.

But they're always in the track so it's hardly an issue. I quite enjoy watching them when they turn up to be honest.

Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks

It starred two mice, Pixie and Dixie, and a cat, Mr. Jinks (a.k.a. Jinksy). Pixie was voiced by Don Messick, and Dixie and Mr. Jinks were voiced by Daws Butler. Dixie, appropriately, talked with a southern twang. Mr. Jinks usually sounded like Marlon Brando.

In many ways the shorts resemble Hanna-Barbera's earlier better-known creation, Tom & Jerry, which also featured a warring cat and mouse (sometimes two) in a domestic setting. However without Tom and Jerry's more lavish budget for full animation, the Jinks team had to rely on funny dialogue and voices to carry the cartoon's humor. The cartoon was also less violent, and unlike the slightly sinister Tom, the headstrong Jinks was, in reality, too dense to pose much of a real threat to the mice.

Pixie and Dixie and Mr. Jinks is also remembered for Mr. Jinks' rhyming but ungrammatical lament, "I hate those meeces to pieces!".

As with Huckleberry Hound, Mr. Jinks would frequently talk directly to the audience, and discuss his plans to trap the "meeces".

True. I was thinking it might have something to do with the infrastructure too. Some parts of the London Underground date back to the 1860's compared to Hong Kong and Singapore's subway sytems which were built in the past couple of decades.

Why dont you write in to Transport for London and see what they have to say.

Usually mice. In London you can see rats ferreting around near bins overground. Mice are usually on the tracks in the tube.

DC has a rat problem. You'll see rats overground all the time. However, I have never seen a rat in the metro. If you are to believe the posters that they have put up, this is primary due to the ban on eating and drinking in the metro.

Where ever people throw away food - there will be rodents.

Someone above mentioned a ban on food in one subway system. That seems to be the only way, or else to train the entire population so that any food thrown away goes only into rodent proof containers.

But for the OP - your basic question is answered - people throw away food and the rodents come get it.

I quite enjoy watching them scurrying around too. Something to pass the time and monotony of standing on a platform waiting for a train.

Mice are pretty harmless, it's the rats that are a problem.

I was once sitting in traffic in London, when this huge rat appeared out of a drain and wandered right in front of our car, just as the traffic moved forward. A little careful timing and SPLAT got it on the back end. Looked in the mirror to see it dragging its half squashed body across the road before it finally expired - got some very dirty looks from the pedestrians passing by though !!.

The rats in London came to be there in the days when London was a huge port and arrived on ships from all over the world, as IIRC they were not a native species to the UK.

Nah. The reason there are no mice in the Singapore underground is they are still using coal burning steam trains and the monoxide gets them.

Hong Kong has a larger, better, more extensive, cleaner metro system than Singapore in my opinion. Also a lot of them are newer+more advanced. Well they are very similar I would say

Both=spotless, very clean, very advanced and no rats/mice AT ALL. No rubbish/food/vandalism either.

Why do Sydney/New York/London trains get vandalized from time to time but not in Singapore/Hong Kong?

Sao Paulo's subway system is also very clean and modern. No vandalism, no people selling inside the stations (it's forbidden), no people living/sleeping inside them either. Even though you can eat whatever you want, it's still very clean.

Read the writing on the sign that someone posted. Karetapi translates as FIRE TRAIN - OK I know it is used for diesel and electric trains too, but that is what it means, more or less. And if they had coal burning engines, it would account for the lack of mice, probably people too.

Lots of people taking Hong Kong and Singapore metro for sure.

Not sure if they have coal burning machines. I think not. Will check

Why do Sydney/New York/London trains get vandalized from time to time but not in Singapore/Hong Kong?

Sao Paulo's subway system is also very clean and modern. No vandalism, no people selling inside the stations (it's forbidden), no people living/sleeping inside them either.

Same for Medellin's metro.
If, for example, you came at four o'clock in the afternoon, then at three o'clock I shall begin to have existential angst because you nag as hell. www.alpharamirez.com

I am extremely confident they do not. Just they have signs that say they do. Just a quaint continuation of a long obsolete term that amuses me when I travel by karetapi from Jakarta to Bandung in a train fairly obviously pulled by a diesel.

We don't do that in Hong Kong but still we have a large/extensive spotless/brand new metro system

The last bit being the key issue. The London Underground is the oldest metro system on this planet in a city with a huge amount of Victorian era buildings and suchlike. I'm not surprised a few mice have worked their way down there where it's warm (usually 10C warmer than the surface) and dark. They're not doing anyone any harm and most of them live below the trackbed. I use the tube every single day at various hours and if I see 3 mice in a week I'd be surprised.

All this proves that it hasn't really much to do with heavy fines or drastic measures such as the ones imposed in Singapore.
