2009-10 NHL Season Thread #1.

Sat Sep 12, 2009 7:54 pm

Continuing from the following thread: 2009 NHL Draft And Offseason Thread. (by RGElectra80 Jun 27 2009 in Non Aviation)

With the NHL Draft and Offseason Thread now archived, it's time for a new thread now that team training camps are opening up and the first exhibition games are within the next few days.

It looks like the Dany Heatley Saga has finally concluded, as he has just been traded to the Sharks (along with a fifth round pick) in exchange for Jonathan Cheechoo, Milan Michalek, and a 2010 second round pick.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=498359
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=290808

He'll get booed in a Sharks uniform when they visit Atlanta on Oct. 24 but Ottawa fans won't get to see him in their building this year (I'm sure some will travel to Toronto when the Sharks visit in February.).

The Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy situation and new ownership is closer to being settled. The decision now rests in the hands of Judge Redfield T. Baum, who can either rule for Jim Balsillie (Who has offered $242.5 million for the team, along with $50 million to the City of Glendale to let the team out of the lease with him moving the team to Hamilton, ON ASAP. The majority owner of the Coyotes, Jim Moyes, favors his bid over the NHL's bid.) rule for the NHL (Who has offered $140 million and would keep the team in Glendale and would eventually sell the team to another group who will keep it in Arizona or the NHL could move it to another market if a buyer cannot be found that will keep it there [This would be similar to when MLB bought the Expos and eventually moved them to D.C.].) or he could toss out both bids and start things over.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=290733

I think the Coyotes will be playing in Arizona this year regardless of who wins the auction for the team. If Balsillie wins, the NHL expected to file an immediate injunction to prevent him from moving the team this season. If the NHL wins, I expect Balsillie to continue the matter via the courts. The NHL Board Of Governors has previously rejected Balsillie as an owner, rejecting him in a 26-0 vote. Judge Baum would had to overrule the actions of the Board Of Governors, and it is not clear whether he is willing to take that step.

I think that despite the lower bid, the NHL will win this because their plan has the support of the creditors and of the City of Glendale. Coyotes owner Jim Moyes favors the Balsillie bid and in the process has fired some shots across the bow of the NHL and Commissioner Gary Bettman, criticizing the league putting teams in warmer weather markets (Well last I checked, since the Jets relocated to Phoenix, four teams in these warm weather markets have won Stanley Cups [Dallas, Anaheim, Tampa Bay, and Carolina] and those four teams have a total of seven Stanley Cup Finals appearances. Let's not forget that back in 1996, the Florida Panthers went to the Finals in their third NHL season.).

I don't understand why they would object him so harshly , Hamilton could easily support an NHL team , god knows Toronto needs another team close by that can actually win the cup.

He ticked off a lot of folks in the NHL back when started offering tickets for the Hamilton Predators even before any sort of deal with the owner of the Preds was finalized. He was definitely putting the cart before the horse, as there was no signed deal between himself and Preds owner Craig Leopold, only a tentative agreement.. He got a bit cocky thinking that his deal to buy the Preds and move them was a slam dunk and as a result did not exactly endear himself to the Board Of Governors, which is made up of NHL owners. In short, his shenanigans in regards to his bid for the Preds as well as the Penguins several months prior (His was informed that the only way the Board of Governors would approve him buying the Pens would be if he agreed to keep them in Pittsburgh, which he did not want to do.) made him someone the NHL team owners did not want in their "club".

I think he will eventually end up with an NHL team, but the NHL would make it almost impossible for him to move that team to Hamilton. I'm sure that the NHL would require him to make a huge payment to Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment since Hamilton falls within the Maple Leafs' territory. The league could also require him to make a "relocation payment" that would be shared amongst the rest of the league. They will let him become an owner on their terms and their terms only.

His spurning of the Oilers was probably a good thing in the long run (Plus the Sharks will probably choke in the playoffs yet again.). While what the Oilers offered the Sens was a fair deal, the only team in Alberta he'd ever consider playing for is the Flames (Back when the Thrashers traded him to Ottawa, there were rumors that surfaced afterwards that a deal that would have sent Heatley [along with a few picks and a prospect or two] to the Flames for Jerome Iginla was nixed by the Thrashers because of the rest of the deal was a bit too high.). When the Sharks made that deal the Canucks a few weeks back, it was done in order to drop some payroll, as they had long been in the running for Heatley.

Fine fine fine; no Heatley jokes then.

Here's something one could take to the bank-

Neither the Detroit Red Wings (*sob) nor the Pittsburgh Penguins are going to be in the Finals this year.

That's a pretty good possibility, as nobody has been to three straight finals since the Oilers in the 80s (Lost in '83 to the Isles, beat the Isles in '84 [Which marked the last of five straight finals for the Isles, winning four and losing one.], and beat the Flyers in '85.). I could see either team making their respective conference finals though.

My early prediction for the Stanley Cup Finals is:

Capitals v. Blackhawks with the Caps winning in six. Yet again, no Cup for Hossa.

I see Detroit and Calgary in the WCF, with Calgary moving on in six. Even though Chicago made it to the Conference Finals this year, I don't think they have the pieces yet. Of course, I'm not sure having Brian Campbell and Cristobal Huet helps much either. Sure they added Hossa (everyone keeps mentioning Kopesci, but frankly...unless he goes batshat crazy this year and pops 20...he's practically worthless)...but Hossa is gone until December, and for some odd reason loves to pull Houdini disappearing acts in May and June.

Chicago is more scary on paper than they are on the ice. I think of 'em as Red Wings Lite. Give Bowman another 2-3 years to shore up the defensive core, give Toews and Sharp (Kane has already shot himself....needs a "change" Big grin ) another 2 years of growth...then we'll have a team that could take it all.

The Caps play no tight defense and Ovechkin is a selfish leader. I'd love to see the Caps upgrade their role players. If they'd kept Cooke, Huet, and Federov, they'd have have more talent than they have now. Even the Bruins are probably going to lose Kessel. I really can't see anybody else in the east being anywhere near the Pens right now, but even we have to deal with Talbot's injury for two months (IIRC). The east may well be as wide open as the west.

The Ottawa GM made a helluva deal given what he had to work with. San Jose gets better on paper, but they now have a trio of headcases in Marleau, Thornton, and Heatley, with the latter two having a tendency of not showing up in the playoffs. In the process, they gave away a streaky scorer who at least plays with more heart than the latter three have ever played with, and a guy who does all the little things--their version of Lehtinen.
It's Stanley Cup or bust this year--as a bunch of their star players are up for contract renewals in 2010 and the Sharks won't be able to resign all of them.

I could have been a homer and said the Thrashers would make the finals (I do think they've got a good shot of making the playoffs.). Supporting a team in the Southeast Division is at times an exercise in patience. On some of the hockey forums out there, there are folks who want the entire Southeast Division folded, and the teams in California, Phoenix, Nashville, and Columbus moved to "real hockey markets" (AKA Canadian cities).

I'd rather see a Southeast Division team in the Finals to further shut the mouths of those "know-it-alls" who think hockey in warmer markets is bad for the game. Although I'd rather cheer on the Caps or the Panthers than the Hurricanes and the Lightning.

I could've said the same thing about the Wings last year with the addition of Hossa, but that's the beauty of the NHL. It takes so much to get to the Finals. I really don't see either the Wings or the Pens making the Cup Finals for three straight years. I'd like to say otherwise...but it's realistically a pipe dream. That said, I hope we beat the tar out of ya in the end of September.

Don't you mean you wish your scrubs beat the crap out of our scrubs? It's a preseason game--no major players see any significant time. In fact, in hockey preseason, IIRC, the starters (1st/2nd liners/defensemen/goalies) don't play at all in the last two games.

As for the Leafs......

I like the changes in the back-line. The defense is bigger, stronger and i think will be more reliable. In the net we have a "healed" Toskola and The Monster, Jonas Gustavsson who may fight for the #1 position. Up front we have pretty much nobody. Blake, Ponikarovsky, Stajan, Grabovsky, Hagman........i'm not too positive about a lot of goals being scored or a lot of key "game winning" goals to be scored. We have a chance to make the playoffs at the #8 position and that's about it. I'm looking forward to the season and i hope i'll be pleasantly surprised but i'm not holding my breath. Kessel may still be coming to the Leafs as i understand TML have put in a few offer sheets. Should be an interesting year overall!!

Two bits of news:

Kessel traded to Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs GM acquired winger Phil Kessel from the Boston Bruins on Friday in a mega deal that had been rumored for more than a week.

The Leafs sent two first-round draft picks and a second-round draft pick to the Bruins for the high-scoring winger. The 21-year-old Kessel, a restricted free agent, signed a five-year, $27 million deal with the Leafs, according to a source.

Okposo taken off on stretcher; Morency suspended indefinitely

CALGARY, Alberta -- New York Islanders forward Kyle Okposo was removed from the ice immobilized on a stretcher after taking a big hit from Calgary Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf early in the second period of a 5-4 shootout loss Thursday night.

Okposo, the seventh pick in the 2006 draft, remained motionless on the ice for more than 6 minutes as he was attended to by trainers from both teams and other medical personnel.

A CT scan showed Okposo had a mild concussion, Islanders spokesman Seth Sylvan said in a text message to The Associated Press. Sylvan said Okposo accompanied the team on the flight to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, where the Islanders are conducting training camp and where these teams will play again on Saturday night.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4483506

NEW YORK -- New York Islanders forward Pascal Morency has been suspended indefinitely after leaving the bench to start a fight with Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf.

The NHL announced the suspension Friday. No date for a hearing has been set.

Phaneuf's hit knocked out Islanders forward Kyle Okposo in the second period of the Flames' 5-4 shootout victory Thursday night in an exhibition game.

I think it's a bit rich for Kessel. He's young and really good but he has a few question marks about his health. I hope it works out.

Phaneuf's hit was legal, if not dirty, like 99% of his other hits. It's a preseason game for god's sake, on top of that the guy was short handed and already had two of your team mates defending him. You shouldn't have to get in a fight because you just laid a clean hit, but Phaneuf is known for letting his team mates take his fights instead of manning up. The Islanders guy who left the bench never should have done so, and rightfully got suspended, but this "indefinite" bollocks is just that. How about 5 games?

It's just like the Leafs to overpay. They're sacrificing some future talent for shorter term gain. While Kessel is still young, those draft picks might have been Leafs longer.

From the NHL Rules:
http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=26481

Quote:
The first player or goalkeeper to leave the players’ or penalty bench during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation from either or both teams shall be suspended automatically without pay for the next ten (10) regular League and/or Play-off games of his team.

I think that the suspension should be the last preseason games, and if he made the Isles, the first 10 games of the season (Following the NHL Rules on leaving the bench.). I'm not familiar with Pascal Morency, anyone who follows the Isles know if he was a lock for a spot on their roster? I'm guessing the indefinite suspension become a set length after a disciplinary hearing is held (no word on when that is), and I would guess that they may follow the guidelines set forth by the rules.

Not another one!

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Columbus Blue Jackets forward Jason Chimera was been wheeled off the ice on a stretcher after being checked into the boards by Minnesota Wild center Eric Belanger.

The hit came with 6:17 to play in the second period of Minnesota's 2-0 preseason victory Friday night.

Chimera appeared to go into the boards face first after getting hit by Belanger. He stayed down on the ice for about 5 minutes before being placed on a stretcher and wheeled off. He gave two thumbs up on his way off and a team official said he was coherent. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
