I have recently purchased "Elegant Universe" and am a little confused with the whole Quantum physics and mechanics thing and as well as string theory>

You already did step 1, which is buy that book.
Now, open the book. I did. I don't understand f all in that book really, but it is a nice story anyhow. It has to do with curly particles you can't see, and they bend time and errrr, I don't really understand, sorry.

What aspects about it? Ask some specific questions and I can try and answer to the best of my ability, I have done a good amount of reading on such things/am surrounded by nerds constantly who I can ask. Just asking "What is quantum mechanics and string theory" though is a HUGE question.

I have some light physics background. Not much, though. But that book does the best job that can be done at explaining it. It's really tough stuff to comprehend.

I would like to know about a little of everything, especially how the strings are held together.

Here watch these you tube videos that explain string theory
Part 1:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkxieS6WuA
Part 2:

These really explain what string theory is up to the 10th dimension

A good understanding at a basic level of all these wacky fields in theoretical physics can be had by reading Dr. Michio Kaku's "Parallel Worlds". Enjoy!

Isn't string theory starting to fall out of fashion in physicist circles?

To understand them, you have to specialize yourself in them. I got my MSc in Physics 2.5 years ago and am currently working on my PhD, both in experimental solidstate physics. And guess what I haven't really understood those theories. Basic
QM questions, ok, but quantum field theory, string theory, all that stuff, forget it without indepth lectures and loads of reading.

Quoting Airstud (Reply 9): Isn't string theory starting to fall out of fashion in physicist circles?

Quite a few experimentalists and nonstring theoreticians aren't especially fond of it. It's an interesting mathematical exercise to come up with a set of rules that fits what we know about how particles interact, but so far string theory has not provided any quantitative predictions that could be confirmed by experiment. And if your theory can't be confirmed by experiment or observation, it's not scientifically rigorous.

That's the last place you want to go if you're trying to make sense out of string theory. It's something difficult to grasp, but this website helped me gain a general understanding of string theory:
www.superstringtheory.com
One of the first things I'd try and do to grasp both quantum mechanics and string theory is to try and understand leptons, bosons, and quarks.

Depending on your interest/freshness with multivariable calculus and topology, I would recommend Road to Reality: A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe by Roger Penrose. I received that book when I was about 12, but now that I am a freshman in college and actually learning multivariable and the like, I am going to start going through it. I have read very good things of it, it is considered one of the better guides to these things.

If you want to understand STRING THEORY or the latest about it, i STRONGLY suggest you find any video that you can of MICHIO KAKU. He is the modern Carl Sagan of connecting and explaining to people these complex subjects.
search "michio kaku string theory"
Start with the link below and then go to his personal page and watch everything he has! its brilliant!

http://mkaku.org/home/
I think his myspace page also has numerous videos!
