Show Us Your Non-av Photos

Thu Oct 22, 2009 11:15 pm

We haven't had this in a while. Title says it all, show us your non-av photographs.

Here's something to get started, taken during lightning storm in Toronto couple of months ago. I didn't have the tripod handy, so it is a a bit blurry (oh and dont mind the clothesline  Silly):

Some people put those little red balls on their antennas to help wind their cars/trucks in the lot whilst the owner of this thing used other visual clues

Quoting WCS (Reply 31):
Well, as you said, sports photos could be challenging. Probably even worse during a race. Focus, sharpness and angle.

Ah ok, thanks for the clarifications!  Smile

For the focus, there is no secret: you need a monopod. Otherwise, your pictures will be blurry, especially at these speeds. You also need a good lense able to cope with constant focus change (because your subject is in constant movement). Good lenses are very expensive, but since I know a nice professional photographer who lent me his 200 mm lens, it was easier  Smile

For the angle, I'll be honest: I cheated a bit. I have reworked it with a software (except the Audi R15, second from top). I was reluctant to do that at the beginning, but since all pros are doing it, then why bother?  Wink

Otherwise, the trick is to lower the shutter speed (between 1/100 and 1/200) in order to give this dynamic look on the rims (all blurry, giving the impression that the car is in movement). If you don't, then you get the rims all neat and you lose this dynamic (and the car looks like it's stopped). However, by lowering the shutter speed, you also increase your chance to have the whole picture blurry. That's also why the monopod comes in handy.

That's for the theory  Smile

Quoting WCS (Reply 31):
Your compositions are great!

Thank you for your kind comment  blush  but there are some people I know who are much better than me. I keep on learning from them  Wink

Estuary Corvina 2009

A shot of me fishing off the back of the "Elmer II" in the estuary near Marua Mexico. As the estuary fills the Corvina chase though the deepening flats hitting shiny sardines and smelt as the small fish are pushed in on the tide. Its a beautiful place , we often sit and drink a few dos equis with the local fisherman ... their boats anchored for the night in the shot below.

Just a little bit disappointed with the bridge post at the bottom if only I had noticed the post before I left, will have to go back another night, this was my first attempt with long exposure
