There's a bone of contention between French and Belgian about the origins of the chip. Of course, Belgian said it's their invention, but French claims it's been invented during the Revolution in 1789. Apparently, the first real written proof of the dish comes from Thomas Jefferson when coming back from France.

Apparently the name "French fries" came about when American soldiers were in Belgium. The locals sometimes fried potatoes, and the American soldiers called them French fries as the people making them were French speakers.

That's the Belgian version of the story and it's no way a proof of its true origin. French fries were already famous in both countries when US soldiers came in Belgium.

The longest word spelled the same forward or backward is "redivider"
The longest word you can type with just your left hand is stewardess.
The shortest letter ever written was "?" The reply was "!"

Quote:
For the record of the world’s shortest letter, we have to travel back to 1862 in France. The noted writer Victor Hugo had just completed his latest novel, Les Miserables, and had gone away on a vacation. But he was most anxious to learn how the book was selling, so he wrote the following letter to his publisher:

“?”

The publisher was just as imaginative as Hugo and must share the record with him for the world’s shortest letter, for his reply to the writer was:

“!”

A reply that obviously made Hugo very happy.

Fact: many a mickle makes a muckle.

What are 'mickles' and 'muckles'? Webster 1913 states that each word is essentially a variant of the other, both meaning 'amount'. Arguments arge as to whether 'mickle' is in this case a corruption of 'pickle' (a Scots word for 'little'), and as to whether 'mickle' was once inherently inferior to 'muckle' or merely a variant. Whatever the case, the proliferation of this proverb has ensured that 'muckle' is now widely regarded as being the superior of 'mickle', something which is likely to persist.
