What's Become Of Your New Year's Resolutions?

Sun Mar 07, 2010 7:22 pm

I only had one _official_ resolution this year; which was to keep better track of my spending & keep my checkbook balanced. It's gone off the rails completely at least twice, with there being a $50 or more variance between what my spreadsheet says and what the bank says I have. Oddly, the bank's figure is usually in my favor...

Also, my bank sent me a new VISA Check card, and when I use it in credit card mode rather than PIN/debit mode, I get "Visa Reward Points," so I use the VISA mode all the time. Two problems this creates is that a) I must maintain and track oh so many receipts, and 2) there is a 1-2 day lag time between the transaction taking place and the debit actually posting to my account.

Weirdly fortunately, I ran out of money in my checking account last Monday (have been sending huge payments to credit card companies with the aim of being totally debt free by the end of this year (I used to have >$9,000 in CC debt; I now have less than $2,500 and it's falling still), but I guess the payments have been too huge if they make me run out of cash and live on the credit card for four days!!!). The emptiness of my checking account, and the days of living on MasterCard instead, allowed all pending VISA check-card transactions to settle completely, so that when I deposited my paycheck on Friday, I had a fresh start.

All receipts for all transactions conducted since depositing my paycheck on Friday are present and accounted for. (So....who wants to bet that the bank's info is still going to be totally different from mine?!?!)

(Also, I had less formally resolved to be more efficient & reliable with my household recycling; rinse all empty plastic bottles promptly, dry them overnight and haul them out to recycling ASAP. I have 100% compliance on that one, even this far into the year!)

Did you make any resolutions? Have you kept them, and to what extent?

Still going to the gym at least twice a week.

No resolutions here, because when you do one, 95% you slack off.

Like, any soda at all? Because diet and zero-calorie ones are OK; aren't they?

Boston, believe it or not! It's my first, so obviously I didn't qualify, but my girlfriend's dad has friends in high places at the BAA, so I got an invitational form. Can't wait for April 19.

What happens to your credit card that transactions get delayed can happen to debit cards too, especially over weekends. Google "bank reconciliation spreadsheet", download it and try it out.

If you have an iPhone or iPodTouch (I suppose other smartphones too), there are financial apps that you can download. Some have more features than others, so look around. I don't personally use them but I've thought of getting one for my gf because she is awful with her finances.

I kept mine. My New Year's resolution was not to make any New Year's resolutions.

Ditto.

Knowing my dirty self it was probably something shallow along the lines of getting laid before the end of the year. As you can tell from my always cranky, cynical and pissy posts I need to get laid

So far I've met that resolution for the past 3 years, not so sure about this year though...

I've decided to take a civil service approach to new year's resolutions; I've set up an inter-departmental committee to report (with fairly broad terms of reference) on possible proposals, with feasibility studies, costed analysis and long term forecasts, which will then be considered, translated into all 20+ European languages and then, the Estonian translation will be sent to North Korea as part of a cultural exchange, before returning and joining the others; I expect to have the final report by 2018, at which point I'll need to set up another committee to help me remember what I set the first committee up to do.

I did consider giving up chocolate this year, but as Europe is still in recession, I felt this was selfish and that I should suffer chocolate as my contribution to gettin the Belgian economy (at least) back on track. Greater love no man hath than he would lay down his waistline for Europe.
