Friday's Stupid Thread: What Tire Do You Use?

Fri Apr 16, 2010 10:44 pm

So continuing with my streak of gear-head themed stupid threads, what kind of rubber is your car rolling on?  Wink

My Ibiza has some crap Bridgestone B250s in 180/60/15 size. In all honesty they're perfectly fine for daily driving but they're freaking dangerous when taken to the limit, the car slides a lot, and they don't squeal at all so you have no warning when they let go, they have pretty poor grip. Fortunately from the other crap reviews that I've read about these I found out they won't last long anyways, so I'm hoping to change them for some wider 205/50/15 General Tire Exclaim UHP summer tires:

I had Generals in my old Neon and I was very impressed with those tires. They made even a crap car like the Neon handle sooooo much better, I can't wait to get them on my Ibiza    Not to mention that for $70 each they're a great deal.

By the way, the best place to get tires, or just reviews:

http://www.tirerack.com

Used them numerous times. Very good prices and the reviews and info are extremely helpful, thanks to them I discovered General Tires and now I swear by them.

I bought myself a set of these about 4 months ago but
They're Bridgestone adrenaline RE001s.

because I have to get new lightweight wheels, so when I do I will be putting on

Bridgestone Potenza RE11s. I currently have 195/50/15 tyres, so I will probably stick with that size.

Goodyear RS-A's on the Volkswagen. Not a bad tire. Little loud. But over all very good all season tire. Which is odd because the reviews on Tirerack weren't very positive. But i'm happy with them

General GS60's and Michelin somethings (they're snow's actually... previous owner never changed them) on the Caprice. The Michelins are almost done so I'll get two more of the Generals, good tire ive found. Then again, its a caprice so road noise, steering feel and high speeds are non existent

I just bought a set of Michelin Pilot Sport All-Season Plus to replace my Michelin HX MXM4 grand touring (which lasted 80K miles and had just reached the wear indicaors). Great deal from Tire Rack, had them installed for $15/tire from my local tire store. All in all, they're pretty OK...quite grippy but I've lost a full MPG. Cross-shopped with the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position and Continental ExtremeContact DWS. Think I did pretty well.

Best friend had them in his GTI. He was not impressed, neither was I. Slightly better than the OEM Contis.

I can't remember the model of the best tires he had on it, but holy crap, they were AMAZING. They were loud, and they didn't last long, but DAMN they clinged to the pavement like a mofo. It was really tough to let the get the car loose, damn near impossible without killing yourself. They were a perfect match for the GTI and were well worth dealing with the noise. They seriously felt like road legal racing slicks.

They had a very distinctive pattern, I want to say they were michelins... extreme performance summer category IIRC

Fulda Carat Progresso (silent, perfect handling on wet roads, good braking action, start to rattle close to the stability limit)

Winter tires

Dunlop WinterSport M3 (good grip on snow and ice, also balanced for dry conditions, average braking action)

Summer:

Kumho Ecsta HM 195/45R16, got them for free when I bought the car because the old ones wore too worn. I'm not impressed, so far I have used 2,5-3 mm on 15000 km.

Winter:

Goodyear Ultragrip 7+ 175/65R14, got them in december when the snow came and I started to skid around on my old wintertyres. A good investment as there was snow for ~2 months this year.

It's funny you mention the Contis. My friend bought them (read not oem) for his Subie and loves them. Another friend bought them for his Jetta after the oem Goodyears were done. He likes them too. I've found the oem tire and the retail one, even if they are the "same" are different tires entirely. Like I said, most of the reviews on Tirerack were negative and were all people who had the RS-A's as factory tires. My experience has been totally different.

I had Conti SportContacts on my first 320i and they were garbage. They made so much noise after about 20,000km that I thought I had run a bearing, you could feel pulsations through the brake pedal. After Continental said this wear was "normal" I tossed them and have run only Bridgestone since.

That is pretty bad, my average life on the rears is 30,000km (which still isn't good) and I got 55,000 on the fronts. When the Motorplan is up I plan to switch to non RFTs, if I keep the car.

BMW 330Ci (225/45-17 front & 245/40-17 rear)

Previously used Michelin Pilot Sports. Currently using Sumitomo HTR Z IIIs.
Bought the Sumitomos based on a tirerack.com test due to perfromance, not the low price. Although not a bad value, I would only buy again if I couldn't afford a better set. The suspension is also worked over on this car so I'll likely buy some PS2s, RE-11s, F1 GS D3s, or Advans next time.

Blizzak Revo1 for Winter use (225/45-17 all around on separate set of wheels).
Great traction but not as versatile as "performance winter" tires. As my priority is simply getting around in bad weather, they work fine. The sidewalls make for an interesting contrast with my quite stiff suspension (turn, wait, there it is....).

MX-5 Miata (195/50-15)

Previously used Bridgestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions.
I loved the (now discontinued) S-03s but it's exceedingly difficult to find a performance tire in this size. I also don't want to jack up the unsprung weight by getting a larger wheel/tire set so I guess I'm stuck. I bought the S-03s for a fantastic $62 each when they were on clearance. I wish I had bought multiple sets given that:
(1) They are the best tire I've owned and were particularly well suited to my car.
(2) I had them on the car for about 4k miles before they were toast.
My only gripe is that the S-03s would flatspot after sitting for extended periods. In ~50F or cooler weather it would take about 0.5mi of driving before most of the shudder would go away.

Currently using Yokohama S.drives.
The S.drives were recommended by tirerack.com but I'd like a stiffer sidewall. Ultimate grip is acceptable but the tire doesn't feel that sporty. In fairness, it is classified as an "Ultra" rather than "Max" performance Summer tire.
