Dear football friends from around the World

With less than 24 hours to go until the opening match between South Africa and Mexico, the time has come to start an official thread for the Tournament.

Feel free to contribute to this thread by post anything relevant about the Tournament in general and on the teams you're supporting.

Like the Olympics, this is just another quadrennial sports borefest, so I'll be avoiding it at all costs. But I hope France do well, considering they saved us here from this overblown tedium.

Roll on August . . .

Tomorrow I am invited for a World Cup party (with beer on tap and BBQ) at a friend's backyard. All of us already agreed that we will switch off the TV immediately when there is a similar annoying background noise like it was during the Confed Cup games last summer.

I am cheering for Germany of course! My secret favorite is Paraguay, I know two players of their team personally.

Roll on 4 PM tomorrow (without Vuvuzelas)!

Why not just turn the sound down?

Anyway, come on England - but I do have a sneaky feeling that Argentina will do well (or totally crash and burn - but that's Maradona for you.....)

Deutschlaaaand, Deutschlaaand, Deutschlaaand, Deutschlaaand. I put the flag in front of my window today, so finally I have a shade for it... I wonder who will win. My bets are on Spain, Brazil or England.

I fear it will be Italy.

And I hope it will be Germany...

Can't wait till July 12...

Anyway, I really hope this event will be a success for South Africa and everyone stays safe as the recent news about all those armed robberies are really worrying.

Switzerland's Alex Frei might miss the Team's first game against Spain due to an ankle injury which happened yesterday in the hours before the team flew off to South Africa. Regradless of Alex Frei playing or not in the first game, the General still has a lot of work to do, if his team wants to stand a chance when it faces Spain on the 16th.

England will do their usual trick of getting to the semi finals by fluking their way through, then crash and burn.

It happened before and after 1966 and we really need to stop living off something that happened 44 years ago. Sorry to be a cynic but I can't see how we're apparently rated as a good team. Denmark beat us 4-1 a few years back and they're hardly a world player, are they?

P.S. Undskyld til alle danskere.

I actually gave England a chance of making it to the final, so they can then crash and burn against Germany, when we win 4:2 in regulation, finally avenging the Wembley goal.

Seriously, I hope Germany can make it again 20 years after we won our last World Cup. We want that fourth star on our chest, and I know we can do it. BTW, for those who have T-Mobile, there's the option of watching the world cup on the go with Mobile TV.

Ever since the draw was made back in December the waiting game has been killing me. Now the big moment has arrived, the greatest show on earth can commence. I just hope South Africa can pull off a trouble free tournament, that the world can enjoy a feast of football. The drama, the tension, the action, bring it on! And oh.....can England please get past the quarters for once, even if we go out, let it not be on penalties, especially not against the Germans or Argies!

It wouldn't have been so bad but I was in Denmark at the time, staying at a Danes' house who had friends round. Having to go out the following day was torture!

In all honesty, Kazakhstan almost beat us as did Japan so Denmark beating us was to be expected, really

I don't see us doing well. We have a similar team to last time and look how well we did...

Just bought a new 50 inch TV and a HD recorder so I don't miss anything despite all games being played in the middle of the night Down Under but rest assured I'll be sitting in front of the TV wearing my German shirt. Just hope "Jogi und seine Jungs" do not disappoint me on Sunday/Monday otherwise will have to stay under cover for a couple of days here in Brisbane.

Couldn't shut my mouth the other day at a sports store when I bought a Socceroos shirt for my son (he also has the German shirt as well as various St. Pauli shirts). Told the guy the Socceroos shirts would be half price after they get a solid beating by Germany. Just hope Klose snaps out of his goal draught.

Hope Germany goes all the way by playing attractive football. Believe Spain has a good chance and hope Argentina departs very early.

Cheers from Brisbane and everyone in Germany have a beer for me,

Peter

With Maradrugsa leading that team, I smell another France 98 here. It's such a shame he didn't called Zanetti!!!

I personally think Mexico will win 4-0 tomorrow to South Africa and France will be another easy game, but Uruguay will be very HARD!!!

The France - Uruguay match will be very nice to watch too!!

Mexico or Uruguay could take 1 or 2 place in the first group... if Argentina goes well, we could have a nice Arg-Mex match or Arg-Uru!!

The problem is that Maracoca has actually fired Zanetti the day he removed him as captain and replaced him with Mascherano.

At this point, you may be right. France already embarassed itself against China recently, there are substantial conflicts in the team (the infamous "problemas del vestidor" or dressing room problems if you know what I mean), plus if you remember the hand of Henry, their cheating will eventually bite them in the ass. France will be out early.

On another note, I'll be missing the inauguration match, and the second match as well tonight, and tomorrow the whole day because of work. I did tell them at work that if I have to go to work, I'll come in my green Mexico jersey.

Isn't it surprising that unlike many times before, the press is surprisingly quiet about Brazil? Usually the press always rated them on Nr. 1, it seems that this might not be the case this time...

I've had to mute the volume now, i actually have a headache.

Surely some technical wizard can put a filter between the mic and the commentary to dampen the noise.
