About 1 hour ago we had an apparent 5.5 temblor (initial estimate) in NE Ontario & SW Quebec. Epicenter was about 50 km NNE of Ottawa. I'm about 150 km WNW of the epicenter and I could certainly feel it. There were two apparent phases, a mild shaking for about 5 or so seconds, then a pause, then more significant shaking for about 15 seconds or so. There is no apparent damage, at least not that I've heard.

It was felt in Detroit. I got a text from my girlfriend who lives in Detroit saying that her dad (who works much closer to the US/Canada border) said he thought there was an earthquake because the desks in the building began shaking. Turns out it was.

I'm in downtown Toronto, 15th floor, and sure felt it! We were evacuated for about 10mins along with a few other office buildings in the area...makes for an exciting Wednesday!

I was sitting at my PC here at work when suddenly I felt and heard a rumble. It started off pretty slowly at which point I thought there was a large transport truck going by outside or something. It got progressively stronger over a period of 5-10 seconds until a point where I couldn't rationalize/mistake it for anything but an earthquake. It was quite loud and the shaking was stronger than anything I've ever felt around here (we've had several minor quakes in this region over my lifespan).
It lasted 20-30 seconds overall I'd say. Very interesting experience to say the least.

It was reported here in Massachusetts. I diddnt feel it, but my buddy's office building was evacuated.

A bunch of people in the Detroit area said they felt it. I was at home, in Taylor, and never felt a thing.

We're in Sarnia about 90 km NE of Detroit. My wife called me from work in an excited tone, reporting that the floor there seemed to be moving, and asking if we'd ever had earthquakes around here. I said yeah, a small one about 20 years ago.
I didn't feel a thing down here in the basement!
I remember a science program on the CBC saying that the plates we are living on move at about the same rate as our fingernails grow. So I guess, its just a matter of time before you feel one.

In the June issue of National Geographic (page 33) there is a map of the world showing "hot spots" for earthquakes. The map shows moderate seismic hazard in the area of today's quake. The area along the St. Lawrence River shows a very high hazard.

Looks like it's been downgraded to a 5.0.
According to the "Did You Feel It?" map, 3 people in my hometown felt it (that's about 300 miles from the epicenter!).

Hi Guys.
I live in the North area of Toronto & had just finished watching two separate flights of US Marines helicopters fly overhead of my apartment ( 2 Chinooks & 2 Blackhawks obviously for the G20 summit about to happen in Toronto). Then about 10 minutes later I just steped into my living room from my balcony when suddenly my whole building started to sway back & forth for about 20 seconds. I stood in the middle of my living room on the 8th floor & knew instantly that it was from an earthquake. It made me start to feel nervous about the building's condition incase it got any worse so my wife & I started heading out the door when the movement stopped. The water in my Cat's large bowl was still shaking back & forth for another minute. It was quite an experience that I'll never forget & now I think it's pretty cool that I've actually felt an earthquake tremor! This planet is so amazing!

Mr Spaceman and I live together and it was very cool to see and hear the helicopters as mentioned fly right over our apartment building.
But I then felt the same shaking only I thought it was me doing the shaking! I held onto my desk as our whole apartment swayed back and forth. It scared me and I'm glad I wasn't alone.

I felt the movement for 10 seconds here in Oakville.
I was on the second floor.It was kind of a cool not strong enough to cause panic.

Glad no one was injured and that property damage was minimal at best.
I think there was a ripple in the pool, but I'm not sure, it might have been the breeze!

I was at work in Richmond Hill and I thought it was the wind shaking our building for the first few moments. Then I realized it was an earthquake, and kept on working. I was the only one there to even notice it...
Mind you, we are on the ground floor so it wasn't as bad for us...

Here in Ontario a 5.0 (or 5.5, whatever) is a BIG quake. According to the national geological survey it's about a one in ten years event. Fortunately no injuries (it seems) beyond angina and anxiety -- but this is part of living in North America anyway.
So, next spring, back in retirement to Manitoba, no epicenters there in recorded history.
