They just did. 1-0.

That was so ironic somehow. The German commenter said: 'I wonder if Uruguay will be able to escape to the break with 0-0' - a few seconds later the 30 metre-goal was scored.

Brazil won acclaim for playing Dunga style, and the died playing Dunga style.

Brazil, a team which when they go forwards is a half-goal already, playing like a small team behind the ball, and even worse after the equalizer.

Let's be fair, Holland didn't push the Brazilians to their half field, Brazil pulled back as they have never done in history. That is the legacy of Dunga.

It will give you results 95% of the time, but everynow and then that 5% comes back to bite.

I can't help feeling sorry for Ghana, since that handball from Suarez prevented a clear goal and a trip to the semi-finals. And as much as an advantage a penalty is, just watching the penalty shootout is a clear indicator how random they can be.

What Suarez did has made him lose his place in the Semi-Final. Wonder if FIFA could make it a 2 game ban? Unfortunately, that's way if goes - the coach will outwardly bemoaning the lack of him, but he'l weigh it up against winning the game.

Uruguay should have had a penalty earlier anyway.

This just highlights a fundamental flaw in the penalisation of these type of things however. What happened today was a perfectly valid course of action. It's clearly profitable to do this type of thing in the last minute of the game.

What I just noticed:

This quater-final is funny when you look at the team's equipment supplier:

Holland vs. Brazil was: Nike vs. Nike
Ghana vs. Uruguay was: Puma vs. Puma
Germany-Argentina will be: Adidas vs. Adidas
Spain Paraguay will be: Adidas vs. Adidas

I'm speechless. You could not write a script like that. To be honest, both teams deserved to go through judging by the way they played. Its also heartwarming to see smaller and/or trophy-less teams like Uruguay, Paraguay, Ghana, and even the Netherlands in the knockout stages as opposed to teams who have won before like Brazil, Italy.

The Dutch will roll over the Uruguayans, sadly. Uruguay has a mediocre defense, with two great forwards. Forlán AND Suarez. One is nothing without the other, so with Suarez out i don´t think Uruguay has a chance at winning vs the Dutch. I´m rooting for them, but this is as far as they have come in this cup.

Yes, but in 1930 and 1950... so quite a long time ago. They were also the last team to even qualify for the World Cup, and now they are in the semi-finals – thanks to Suárez, who wanted to experience what it's like to be a goalkeeper, if you want to express it in a positive way.   The Netherlands are going to crush them though. Interesting day to say the least!
Brazil - OUT - Netherlands - IN - Brazil were expected to do well but they were not a lock - recall their recent past.

Uruguay - IN - Ghana - OUT. I saw the penality kicks section of this from outside a bar next door to where I work. You could hear the cheers an moans from the bar down the block (also watching the match). Kinda thrilling ending, too bad it has to be down penality kicks and instead play it out.

Tomorrow
Germany - Argentina -- I will have to find some way to see some of this game, should be a great one. Germany has great disipline, works like a well made machine. Argentina has flaws but they do have a great spirit. Hard to pick a winner.

Spain - Paraguay -- Paraguay has been excellent so far, Spain had a few bumps in the first round. I suspect Paraguay will win.

Let us hope there is excellent quality of play, great plays, sound officiating, no excessive 'flopping' and so on.

The Netherlands deserved.

Dunga's choice of players (Michel Bastos, Felipe Mello, Luis Fabiano, among many others ) was very criticized in Brasil , and the fact he didn't bring players such as Ronaldinho Gaucho due to personal problems and other players was also very criticized by the media among many other slams, that created a tension, with Dunga even insulting a journalist of Brazil major TV channel on a live interview (not really the attitude a coach should have). There were even jokes about Brazil's performance in this World Cup due to Dunga's bad choice of players. That was not so unpredictable as some people here say, and of course brazilians want the team to win,and cheer for it, but how the choice of players Dunga brought to South Africa was so criticized by media, which influences a lot in public opinion, many people in Brazil, especially the ones who have a clue about soccer, are not as surprised as some people here seem to be. Bad arrogant coach, Bad choice of players, and of course played badly.

For whatever reason, the Dutch have been my "european team" (kind of funny, because in the only world cup game I went to, I was actually rooting against them--the '94 match against Brazil--but I was 8 and had just been given a free hat by Brazil fans), and so I was pulling for them, but Robben spent more time on the ground than he did standing up--and he was probably the worst diver of this particular game.

That said, the red card against Melo was completely legit.

Quoting LJ (Reply 94):
But not more silly than all of those "experts" predicting the outcome of a football match

I would love to tabulate the predictions of the various animals and compare them to some of the experts picks, and see what group is more successful--the experts, or the animals. Me thinks the margin is closer than you might think, and I wouldn't be shocked to see the animals come out on top.

Quoting RJ111 (Reply 125):
What happened today was a perfectly valid course of action. It's clearly profitable to do this type of thing in the last minute of the game

Again, I'm writing this from the perspective of a casual soccer fan--I only watch or care during the Euro competition and the World Cup because, like the Olympics, its a nice diversion from my usual sports--but there was nothing wrong or "cheap" about Suarez' move. Hockey is my favorite sport, and they always tell you that it is better to take a penalty than to give up a goal (that's why coaches rarely yell at a player for taking someone down on a breakaway--they might yell at the guy for making a screwup that led to the breakaway, but they'd much rather see their player in the box, than a puck in their net).

Suarez did it, didn't try to hide it, and he got caught. He knew what was going to happen and did it anyway, and he should be celebrated for doing so--and it just so happened that he single-handedly (literally) saved the game for Uruguay because he knew that penalty shots are not guaranteed.

It's one of those matches that leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth, because Uruguay looked very beatable, and I'm pretty sure that Landon Donovan would not have missed that penalty. Oh well.

and they got the punishment they deserved for that hand. In Basketball how many fouls are committed in the last moments of a tight game just to have chance of staying alive in it? This was the same situation, only that in football it's not as common

Voeller needed revenge in 1990 for the 1988 championship's in Germany. Actually Rijkaard did it three times, after the first foul of him on Voeller. Then after Voeller dived in the dutch penalty area. And when walking off the pitch together with him after their red cards again at least one time. Voeller is also very much 'loved' here in the NL.
However, both players were wrong, with indeed Rijkaard being more wrong than Voeller, a true classic as well! As should be in NL-D

What personal problems with Ronaldinho? Besides, during the time I had the opportunity to watch the Serie A, Ronaldinho was IMO not even close to a level that could bring him back to the Seleção. Though Ronaldo could have been an option. Luis Fabiano and Felipe Melo were decent choices though, no idea about Michel Bastos.

Boooooo!!! I hope Uruguay is out in the next match!

They will be, although then Germany will sweep the Dutch in the final.

I think most people thought Ghana / Africa deserved that half final place. They had (extreme) bad luck but also missed 3 penalty shots & did not score the extra goal in 120 minutes. Suarez sacrificed himself in a split second, can we really blame him? Of course not.. He is a very popular player in the Netherlands, for Ajax he's a great asset, the public loves him.

Most folks here think Uruguay can be beaten.. Remarkably the dutch team made it with very average soccer sofar in the WC, they are unbeaten for 22 games now. Many favorites have been send home though..
