My father was a passenger in a McLaren SLR - hitting speeds of 320 km/h.

My dad's friend took him for a spin in his Ferrari F40 in the early 1990s, he had other friends drive ahead on the highway to make sure the road was clear and he apparently hit 198 mph on a public road...

I don't really exceed the speed limit in my country but abroad, 130 mph / 209 kph in a BMW 318 E46. I still miss that car. What I liked about it was that the cabin was always very quiet, even at those speeds. If I went over 70 mph in my Land Rover, it would be a completely different story...

We just returned from Montana driving my PT Cruiser. The speed limit during the day is 75MPH on the interstates, same in Nevada and parts of Idaho. We went to Regina, Saskatchewan where the speed limit is 100KPH. We managed to mantain 120KPH for long streches between the border and, IIRC, SK-34, so nothing really notable. However, through northern Nevada on I-80, I did manage to push up to about 90MPH for 5 miles or so at a time. No one around, so why not? I averaged about 80MPH through Nevada and Montana. If there were cars to pass me, they were flying by.
You bet I'm pumped!!! I just had a green tea!!!

I meant fastest speed you´ve ever driven on a public road, preferably legally, and in which car.

281 km/h in a Friends DB9 on a summer sunday morning back in 2008 at 0600am on the (nearly) empty A5 from FRA down to Darmstadt ... now the Autobahn here is under construction and will stay limited to 80 till 2012

DB9, wonderful car. That car is very much liked in Frankfurt, you see a lot here.
Did you know that in the late 30s this strip of autobahn was used for land speed world records? Renowned race driver Bernd Rosemeyer died during an attempt due to a sudden gust of wind (his car became airborne and hit a bridge). Halfway between FRA and Darmstadt there is a parking lot named after him close to where he died.

250 km/h in my RS4 B7 I sure miss her.
213 km/h in my Cayenne

The highway is 120   , then it's 80, 60, 45, 30, 15, 5...
Did the 230, 225 and both 220s in a 120 zone, the 180 in a 60 (hence "Fast and Dumber"), and the 158 on a 80 zone.
And except for the Jagorawi Highway, the it's rough (including the other highways)... Although the 180 in a 60 zone was on a smooth stretch back then, today the highest I dare go on that zone is only 110 even when it's totally empty! It would be totally suicidal to do so today...

For totally dumb, I did a 100 in a 60 zone (Sudirman avenue) after a new year's party (and the roads were quite filled but fast), half drunk in my Wagon R... chasing a totally mad Vitara... my senses got the better off me saying, "this guy's not worth racing... if he wants to kill himself, let him..."... and let him pass... 1 km down the road he flew off straight into a tree... his passenger died and he was probably crippled for life (listened to the police radio afterwards as I loitered around the "accident site"). New Years', the highest death toll within a 24hr period here, year after year.

Am not so dumb these days (but still dumb sometimes!    )

235 km/h on the A4 going downhill in an E 230 (S210). Not bad for a 4-cylinder estate, IMHO.

I know it's not a public road, but I did 170 mph in a Mercedes 500 SL on an 8,000 runway. Not my car and the airport was open for traffic. Helped that I used to drink beers after work with the tower controller that was working that day.

This vehicle had ECU upgrade chips which removed the electronic limit of 155 mph and upgraded the performance. A MB dealer can do this fairly simply.

I've been able to drive any number of German cars well over a hundred MPH. The problem here in the U.S. is that the roads are not designed and built for it.

I can recall back in the late 1980's when the Sawgrass down on the western side of FLL was brand new. My cousin had a new 928 I shoved to 125 MPH for a short distance and the road became like a wash-board at that speed. Not good.

Well, you apparently were either a firefighter or EMS...thank you for your service. Nonetheless, you're very far off the mark. Speed is only one factor when it comes to accidents. Usually it's only the aggravating factor. Moreover, it's not breaking the speed limit that causes accidents, it's driving too fast under the current conditions. Let me remind you, that Germany, where 22% of the highway network has no speed limits, has lower accident rate than Canada...
Now let's look how the traffic looks in Canada: Cars in every lane without order, tailgating, changing lanes without signaling, merging in at low speeds...and what is the police doing? Enforcing the under posted speed limit...
If you really want to help the situation, stop crying for low speeds and start promoting good driving habits and actual enforcement of those. Money spent on helicopters used to enforce speed would be better spent on driver training.

Ok, from someone that is a BTDT when it comes to scraping bodies that go SPLAT on the highway, whether it was on the Helo or riding in a Box, I can say that although speed may not be the only factor in causing accidents, it is the #1 cause of deaths. It is all about Newton's Laws of Energy, and the human body can only absorb so much, before you brain is damaged, neck is broken, Aorta is transected, I could go on and on!! The faster you go, the more energy has to be absorbed.

But,

That does not mean, that I have never driven fast on the highway!!! Adrenaline is a very addictive drug, that comes in many forms  So, the fastest ride I ever drove, was one of my Dr Buddy's brand New Corvette with the 500+ HP or something, and hit 150. But riding on the outside of a MH-6 Little Bird 200 feet above the deck in the desert, is waaaaaaaay more fun

Wrong. There wasn't a single person killed by speed. Now, deceleration is an entirely different story...(And I guess I should apologize for the smartass remark. But I couldn't resist)

Well where the heck do you drive? There's very few interstate highways in the US I wouldn't feel comfortable going over 120mph. The only reason I don't is due to traffic. Though I must confess I'm not too familiar with east coast or midwestern highways.

However, I must say, in some parts of SoCal, the highways are made of concrete and are extremely uneven for some reason, so you're bouncing the whole way, anything over 100 in those roads gets tricky. That's about the only place I can think

Unfortunately the iphone camera sucks when there's a lot of movement

In the pic you see something between 200km/h and 220km/h, but the top speed was 240km/h aboard this 1996 Mercedes E420, last year, in the Castello Branco highway, in São Paulo.

I also reached 240 in the same highway with a Volvo XC60. Wow, the Volvo is so stable, it is indeed a fu*king great car. I'm loving the agility of it, considering it's a SUV and it feels more like a sedan! The best purchase of the year, for sure!! lol...

I'm still in the US where I drove a BMW 3 25xi with 250 HP. Unfortunately only around the neighborhood and nearby streets with a 50 mp/h speed limit. I am sure though it would be fun on the highway, or even better, the German Autobahn.

Just answering the question as asked by the OP.

The "fastest car I ever drove on a public road" was an Aston Martin DB9.

I think I got it up to about 30 mph.

Fastest I have driven is 140 mph in my old Alfa 147 on the M180 from Yorkshire to Grimsby. Im not sure if the top speed of my Mazda RX8 (192 not the 231) was greater than the Alfa or not.

In Germany in 2002, I did 230-235 km/h in a rented BMW 525d on the A2 between Berlin and Koeln.

In the US, a long time ago, I was in my 98 BMW M3 and drove 145 mph (was the speedo reading anyway) in the dead of night.

Unfortunately i havent had the pleasure of driving a Ferrari or Porsche, i have driven big engined Audi's and VW's though i have never owned them.

Fastest car at the moment is the Astra VXR, flat out managed to get it to 159mph/255kph. even though on paper it had a top speed of 152mph/244kph.

I normally save this speed for track days though, as i do not want to lose my license at the age of 22.

My first Astra was a 2.2 SRi petrol. Raced my dad the first week of getting it, his car is a Vectra 1.9 CDTI SRi. For a diesel the common rails are quite a pleasure to drive, we were going side by side doing about 140mph/225kph.

Though as a passenger the fastest i have done is 170mph/273kph, in a friend of a friends highly tuned 410bhp Nissan Pulsar. I don't normally worry when i'm a passenger, but this time i did feel uneasy at times, though it was enjoyable.

Interestingly enough, that stretch of the A8 is where I achieved my highest speed in a road car - 155 mph (250 km/h) in my 135i. If anyone in North America is thinking of buying a German car, I highly recommend taking delivery of the car in Germany as I did; you won't regret it. Not only does it give you an excuse for a two or three-week vacation in Europe, but you get to experience your car on the roads it was designed for.

Noble thought except...if to do wrap you car around a tree and mangle yourself in the process, it may 'only' be your life you risk, but think... Someone will have the unpleasant task of removing your remains from what's left of your car, someone has the sad task of going to your home and notifying your next of kin of the accident. If you survive hospital staff will have to contend with your horrendous and possibly permanent injuries. You want to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair, being fed through a tube, urinating via a catheter into a bag and having other clean you up when you uncontrollably defecate? It might 'just' be your life but you would not be the only one affected by your actions.

I don't mean to sound like an old windbag but I have had to do some of these delightful tasks, and while I recognise this is part of my job, it is frustrating when such events are as avoidable as in the context of this thread.

No i wasnt looking at the speedo while doing this!

it happened during a track day at RAF Odiham Race Circuit, it is a simple track so is good for beginners ( ie Me. ) i was told my speed when i finished, to be honest i hardly looked at my speedo, mainly i looked out the windscreen!

If you havent done one you should do a track day, the adrenaline rush you feel is out of this world!
