Can anyone who has been to these islands advise whether they are a good visit and what there is to do ? How long an ideal stay would be, safety, and any other useful information.

Thanks.

Here's what the Canadian Dept of Foreign Affairs has to say about the safety in Ecuador.

As for what you should do there... go scuba diving. The waters are colder than other areas but the marine life is just staggering. If you're not certified, do the class and take the dives in the Galapagos with Scuba Iguana. http://www.scubaiguana.com/html/diving_courses.html

Sorry about all the scuba stuff, but I work at a scuba shop and I'm used to selling diving

You get on a ship and cruise around the islands, stopping at each one. You can snorkel with the sea lions (they are very playful), marvel at how an animal as ugly as a sea iguana can be cute, dance with the boobies (blue and red-footed) and enjoy some nice, equatorial weather.

You can help destroy a pristine and unique environment!

Unbridled tourism is causing grave damage to the Galapagos Islands, the archipelago that inspired British naturalist Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.

Do that in California and you're Great White bait. I guess the islands don't have the same shark problem.

There are a few sharks, but no Great Whites that I know of.

And muse about the fact that Darwin seems not to have recorded the source of the tortoises in terms of islands and relied on Gould for identification of the finches which Darwin had called blackbirds, "gross-beaks" and finches. He then spent 1846 to 1854 studying barnacles.

Still had Darwin not made it, Wallace certainly did.

He would not have met any benchmarks for his work were he in this century.

You´ll have a fantastic time, the islands are absolutely great (but rather expensive). Absolutely worth it.

In my case, I did not take a cruise through the islands. I stayed at Puerto Ayora and from there I took day trips to the islands. Once in Puerto Ayora (more centrally located than San Cristobal, you´ll probably be arriving at Baltra/ Puerto Ayora) go to a travel agency and they´ll schedule / book all the tours.

I also travelled and stayed two nights in Isabela Island (Puerto Villamil). I highly recommend it. There are scheduled boats that sells you tickets to Puerto Villamil from Puerto Ayora.

I was there for a week, and it was not enough time.

Enjoy your time in the Galápagos!
