What Is The Meaning Of Your Screen Name?

Sun Oct 31, 2010 12:53 am

Mine obviously means United Airlines 747, but it means a bit more. I had never flown on a 747 before and in 1999, I flew to Hong Kong on a United Airlines 747-422, which was a dream of mine fulfilled.

So lets hear your story.

Mine is not what you would assume, it's actually from when i was feeling nostalgic about Orlando. There's a small old part over by Lake Weston that used to be a village named Piedmont.

Well, the first time I saw a 753 in TZ colors, I was a bit astonished. It looked so good, kind of graceful.

Now it's nostalgic, which is nice as well.

I live 5 minutes from YVR and when I lived in the UK, my main spotting haunt was LTN. It is still a special place, as that is where my late granddad often took me in school holidays and I got the airplane bug.

They are both fantastic airports for the spotter.

Mai is my nickname among my family but also stands for MY, and YYZ is my home airport, since I live only 10 minutes from it. Also my first job in Canada was literally at the end of one of the YYZ runways, just beside the famous Petro Canada gas station.

My username is pretty boring. My real name is Richard and people call me "Rich" for short. "M" is the first letter of my surname, hence "RichM". I feel a bit daft writing this, because it's probably self explanatory to most!

I used to play in a band in OKC back in the early 90s, and because I was from MS, they called me the Mississippi Mudboy because of the Mississippi River being called the "Muddy Mississippi". I would have used MS Mudboy, but I did not want people to think I was a woman, so I just went with Mudboy.

Gemuser = GEM User
GEM = Graphical Environment Manager

GEM was Digital Research's GUI in competition with Apple and Microsoft. A MUCH, MUCH better product than either and required MUCH less CPU power and RAM than either AND was full colour AND would run on an 8086/88 processor and ran like the wind on a 286.

Unfortunately DR didn't have the marketing savvy of either MS or Apple and its founder was killed soon after its release, so it died!

Every year, since I was 3 months old, we would go to Argentina to visit my family. We took Canadian Pacific, to fly from MEX to SCL and on to MDZ on AR. Until in 1973, Mexico broke up diplomatic relations with Chile and we were forced to fly to EZE with Aerolineas Argentinas. The flight number ex-MEX was AR 385. That flight represented to me many things. Among others, my annual summer family vacation to see my relatives in Argentina, and the nice things my Italian grandmother would feed us while staying with her in MDZ.

The AR 385 flight was changed from a 707-387C to a 747-287B in the early 80´s. That was my first time on board a 747 and once I flew on the Jumbo, I was hooked on aviation forever. It did seem a stretch to get a username such as AR385747 so I stuck with AR385.

lol, I honestly didn't want this username, in fact I hate it -- I'd change it if I could. I just typed it in the username box as a joke not actually expecting it would actually be available. Worse than that, it even asked me to confirm and I was so taken aback, I simply did not believe it wasn't taken, so just to see what would happen, I hit yes. Serves me right for doubting a computer!

So, the username I WAS going to go with -- IdahoFlyer. Because I live in Idaho, and I love to fly.

Cheers!
Anthony/Airport (Wish I could type Anthony/IdahoFlyer here!)

The name is that of a vulnerable marsupial, restricted to the the south west of Western Australia and commonly seen on Rottnest Island. Rottnest Islands gets its name from these animals as the Dutch mariners who discovered the island thought that they were large rats.

Stasis implies a complete cessation of life processes, which can be medically restarted or restart spontaneously when stasis is removed. When I moved to Los Angeles, my "life" went into temporary "stasis" due to several serious medical issues. I worked right next to LAX for a time for DHL Worldwide Express, and I loved watching the diversity of aircraft and airlines at LAX.

Now, I once again live in PHX, and see nothing but SW and US aircraft at Sky Harbor airport- and I miss the "flavor" and variety of LAX and working for DHL.

Northstar-the name of my fantasy airline. When i first created it, back in college, i called it Timberline because of course it was based in Denver and Durango, as I was at the time, but as I "grew up" and moved on with my life and traveled more and to more far flung places i decided Timberline really didn't fit anymore, so I changed it to Northstar. Of late, I've considered changing it again to either Pan Am, TWA or National, to reflect it's global reach.

Boy-I often like to think i'm a 12 year old in a 43 year old body.

I didn't know the IATA code for RKE, my local airport

All I knew was that it was sometimes referred to as Copenhagen Airport - Roskilde, so I figured taking CPH and adding an -R in the end would have to do.

A variation on a nickname I use since I'm on the interwebs. Aesma is one name of a demon that appears in a lot of religions, and is not very nice : I used it first as a nickname for wargames, in the form "Lord Asmodeus" or "Asmodée", some years ago I found Aesma was less used, shorter, and more mysterious, so I went with it.

Madame Concorde is the name given to Concorde in the British Airways Dilbert children's book collection - these used to be part of the "British Airways Flightriders" package distributed to little children on board BA long haul flights. Madame Concorde comes in only a few of them. All the planes in the stories get their own names.

Every book tells about the different adventures of Dilbert Jumbo - a jolly 747-200 from the British Airways fleet.
These little books have now become rare collectibles.

I find Madame Concorde so charming that I could never have chosen another A.net sceen name.

You will find a picture of Madame Concorde on my profile page.
There was a better way to fly it was called Concorde

Tristar was the aircraft I flew on the first four times I ever flew and it is still my favourite plane. Larnaca (LCA) was the destination everytime. It is also a nod to my mothers heritage.

It is also the only aircraft/airport combo where I have ever been involved in an airliner 'incident'. BA Tristar speeding down the runway for takeoff and then the brakes slam on and we go screeching down the tarmac. I was seven years old. I remember telling my mum that the tyres had burst on the undercarriage due to the plane wobbling while we taxied back to the terminal and being told 'of course they haven't'. Pretty pleased with myself when, upon disembarking, 4 or 5 tyres had gone on the bogeys oblivious to the fact that most of the adults thought they were going to die. Ahh, the joys of childhood.

Now that they have all been banished to Europe, that gives me an excuse to go!

Wow, this is embarrassing...

No, I do not love RJ, the airline (never flown on them). When I first joined A.net I had just started working in the avaition industry and had never really flown much before. I did do a lot of spotting though, and I loved the look of the CRJ, so I created this user name. Mind you, I had never flown on a CRJ before. Now, here I am, after 51 flights on the various members of the CRJ family and am embarrassed every time I sign in!

Mine is twofold:

SW: Obviously Air Namibia...I grew up in Namibia. However, when I created my screenname I was in college in the USA and flew Southwest quite a bit, so it kind of worked for both. However, now that I travel for work instead of pleasure most of the time, my most flown airline is AA...

733: The type of a/c I ended up on most when flying Southwest between MCI and my family in MDW.

Zak's always been my computer / online nickname, even though it has nothing to do with my real name. I developed it back in the late 80ies, when computer game high score lists only offered 3 digits.

When I signed up here, "Zak" was already taken, so I added "HH", which is the license plate area code for my home town, Hamburg.
