Hence why Australia will never, ever host a world-cup.

'Never' is debatable. There have been many cries of 'never' in relation to football/soccer in Australia in the past: never again will Australia reach the World Cup finals, never will Australia be able to sustain an even moderately professional soccer league, etc. But I do however share your pessimism - right now the economics are not working in Australia's favour.

I just hope that A-League management has a contingency plan for maintaining long-term interest in the league when the World Cup bid fails.

You guys have the time zone issue all wrong.

FIFA has no need to pander to european audiences, they're already going to watch. If it's a business case we're talking about then an Asia friendly time zone is the key.

The real issue for Australia is wether the other Asian votes can stomach 'their' turn at hosting being in a place many didn't want in the Asian Fed. in the first place.

The more I think about it the surer I am it will be the USA in 2022.

2) The league has two franchises specifically because of the market's strength. Ever wonder why New Jersey doesn't have 2 teams?

That's going to be rectified in the near future, as MLS is seriously considering a second NYC/NJ area team, more than likely a rebirth of the Cosmos.

Quoting N1120A (Reply 43):
The new Cowboys Stadium would almost certainly be included, and is climate controlled but still has a little sun (so God can watch, after all :-P). I'm sure they can swap out their junk artificial pitch for a grass one.

Back in 1994, they played at the Pontiac Silverdome and used real grass that was placed on wooden pallets on top of the artificial turf.

When the Georgia Dome hosted friendlies the last few years, they've laid grass over the FieldTurf. They would do the same in Dallas at the New Cowboys Stadium. One of the other domed venues that would host matches, University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ, has a field that is rolled in and out of the stadium, so no issues there.

A host nation is still automatically qualified which I think is a good thing. It used to be the case that the World Champions were also automatically qualified but that has been changed.

I'll get to see England host a World Cup before I die, LOL jk not if FIFA have anything to do with it.

Desperately disappointing day. I firmly believe Englands was one of, if not, the best bids for 2018. However, of course FIFA don't like people exposing them for what they are and if that's had a detrimental effect on our bid so be it. Let's just hope Russia can build all those hotels and Stadia before the event...

As to Qatar, what a joke. I'd have been happy with Australia. There'll be hell to pay if their 'Solar powered cooling' systems fail... but of course they have plenty of money to throw at it if it fails!

Right, let's focus on the next bid... oh wait, what's the point. Although maybe Sepp Blatter will have disappeared from FIFA by then and we'll have a better shot.

Think about it this way - just hope and pray your country ends up in that Group! However, it wouldn't surprise me, with all the money Qatar has, that they buy some really good players and give them citizenship and eligibility for the team, so Qatar's 2022 squad might not be that bad.

Qatar, the smallest nation to host the World Cup, used its 30-minute presentation to underline how the tournament could unify a region ravaged by conflict. Presenters also promised to overcome summer heat of up to 130 degrees by air conditioning outdoor stadiums it will build, then dismantle and give to needy nations.

How easy to say this. What about Russia's (and Soviet Union) history of football, the many times (10 times) the WC has been in Western Europe. It's about time it's going to Eastern Europe. Why should it go once again to Western Europe? (maybe in 2026?)
You think South Africa, Germany, Japan & S-Korea, France, the USA etc are all corrupt/dictatorial/money according to your above quote? Interesting, interesting.

I'm not bought on Qatar actually holding it. We've seen how unstable oil based economies can be. Add to the small size of the country making it even more suceptible. I fear for this decision. It could happen that the UAE joins in the future with Qatar... to help.
UAE has actually qualified for the WC.

Russia, well, I can't say I am dissapointed. They are one of the biggest countries not to have yet hosted. I have to take a positive outlook on this one and hope they do a good job. I would help integrate Russia more to the world. So now with this, and again I still think 2022 could be moved... 2026 is surely to be either in China, Spain, England or the United States, with Australia an outside shot.

In 2030, if all goes well to plans underway by Argentina and Uruguay authorities, the World Cup would come back home... to the shores of the River Plate where it was conceived, 100 years later (a la Athens 2004).

To be fair, Russian football teams (with foreign players, but thats no difference to other European Leagues) scored pretty good results in european club football the last years, and Russia, or Soviet Union, played an important role in european football the last decades (at least around 30 or so years ago).

Still this decision smells of corruption. It is not that I do not think Russia never deserves a world cup, but given the current political climate, I would have preferred England.

Although, as a german fan I am not sure England is a safer place to visit   I have heard that England lost vs Germany during the last world cup

Not when I was there. The only licensed shop you can buy alcohol at is the Qatar Distribution Company. To do so you need an alcohol permit. Unfortunately, you can’t enter the shop without an alcohol permit, and you can only get an alcohol permit in the shop. You can also buy alcohol from hotels, which are (wait for it) supplied by the Qatar Distribution Company.

Agreed - I think Russia is a great choice for 2018. Huge domestic market, but also a huge market to capture from...Moscow/St. Petersburg are only a few hours from the major hubs of Europe - UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain; also only a quick overnight from Japan and China. Domestic transport is pretty good by airline (and, to a lesser extent, train), security will be an issue but it usually is when a huge event is held anywhere.

And supposedly by then, according to the Human Development we should be first world countries.... (again)

So assuming the rules stay the same, no Europe or Asia for 2026, no Asia for 2030.

USA in 2026, Uruguay in 2030?

What happens if Qatar cannot meet demands? Does FIFA pull the rug out and move it elsewhere? USA is one of a few countries that could easily host a World Cup with zero advanced notice. We have the stadiums and infrastructure. Does FIFA delegate "backups"?

I woudn't mind that really, I just don't think it's possible. I don't think Qatar doing it is possible and they are awash in Peak Oil and real state bubble cash.

It's billions of dollars and Uruguay's bugdet is only so much. Also, it would involve building significant stadiums, 50.000 seaters, all over Uruguay in cities of not even 100.000. I mean anything is possible, but to me it would be like the boa trying to swallow the elephant.

And Uruguay is a very pragmatic nation, so I really doubt they would do it alone unless they really really could.

In all honesty, we all know FIFA (along with all other sport organizations lately) is a corrupt bunch and their decisions are often swayed. But you guys sit here and whine all day about this country and that country. Do you seriously think that nations such as the USA, Germany, England don't participate in corrupt practices these days? Unless you got on one of those Cayenne taxis, of course.

Qatar has wont he bid for 2022!!

For those of who you who are seriously ill informed about the weather conditions in Doha - Qatar need to "google" it out soon. Yes the summers are unforgiving, but that is only during the months of June - September. It gets pretty cold in winters and is very very pleasant during the months of Oct- Nov and Mar - April.

Secondly for those of you who think Qataris are not interested in football .... you need to know more. The qatari kids are virtually born with talent to play this sport. Yes they never made it to big tournaments, but still that doesn't stop them fr being crazy football fans!

What happens if Qatar cannot meet demands? Does FIFA pull the rug out and move it elsewhere? USA is one of a few countries that could easily host a World Cup with zero advanced notice. We have the stadiums and infrastructure. Does FIFA delegate "backups"?

I don't think there are designated bakcups, but it has happened in the past, Mexico took over from Colombia three years before kickoff for the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

Namibia-Uruguay 2030.

Argentina-Chile-Uruguay would be a good one.

And what month(s) are the World Cup played? Not usually December...

They may be interested, but that doesn't mean they're good

Though I don't think it was ever official, weren't there rumors of a backup for South Africa, just in case they failed in the end? For some reason, my memory says someplace in Europe, like Germany (who had just hosted 2006 and have the facilities)

Too many countries. Realisticially Argentina-Uruguay, or Argentina-Chile.

Argentina would save much more if done with Chile, but of all those three countries the linchpin is Argentina. There won't be a WC in Uruguay or Chile otherwise, unless Chile really is rolling in cash at some point. Uruguay is just too small, I don't doubt their capabities, let it be clear.

USA can blame their (lost) bid on Morgan Freeman.

The world cup should be about the players and the fans that come to watch the games. Having it in Qatar is nothing short of a joke.
