It Breathes Through Its Anus...

It breathes through its anus, can liquefy its body and acts as the waste collectors of the seabed. Scientists now believe that a species of sea cucumber living off the British coast could become a lucrative culinary export.

Anyone hungry?

(BTW, contrary to popular, I *DO NOT* breathe through my anus. I only talk through it.)

"Tastes like squid." Well at least that is a change from "tastes like chicken" usually sated to describe something people are unfamiliar with.

Sea cucumbers, also known as trepang, are believed to be the first traded articles from Australia. Aborigines from the northern parts of Australia traded fishing rights with Makassans for items like pottery, cloth and metal blades. Some Aborigines were directly employed in the trade.

Trepang were placed in boiling water and then preserved by being dried and smoked before being taken back to Makassar. The Australian Government effectively killed off the trade by imposing licensing fees that made it uneconomic.

Heston Blumenthal cooked some recently on a UK TV food show. The gonads are supposed to be the tasty part, I'll stick to chicken.
I'm finding it hard to believe, I'm in Devon.

If it was only that!

My appetite is not tickled here, to put it mildly.

If that is the case I'll give it a try. I love squid. I was at a restaurant in Toronto a number of years ago and they brought out an entire squid on the plate (it was gutted). It was the BEST!!!!! That coupled with some other stuff that happened that night made it one of the best days of my life!

I'm almost tempted to bight and ask what else happened.

Squid can be wonderful if prepared fresh, but otherwise it can be disappointing. The best squid I had was in Mykonos at a taverna that offered some really good mezés. With a glass or two of ouzo and pleasant company it made for a lovely evening.

In contrast I had some squid at the Sheraton in Perth that was well below par.

A sea cucumber? I thought this was going to be a thread about politicians.

This proves that, however refined you might think you are, when it comes down to it, anything that breathes through it's arse makes you laugh/cry/throw up

I have very fond memories of the Carlingview Inn.

Back in the day I used to work harvesting these babies - marketed then as gooey duck.

Getting them involved sucking surrounding sand and silt away until they no longer gripped, once out they were esay to handle. You also got a quite a bit of meat from each one. Usually served raw and marinated, a very light and crisp taste.

For what it's worth, I also breathe through my chocolate starfish - almost exclusively exhaling !

I live in China and eat sea cucumber often. It's chewy but not as much as squid. It can be served in a corn soup, in which case it's tasteless and not so appetizing, or it can be stir fried in a soya based sauce, in which case it can be very tasty.

Cheers

For a moment, it sounded like a thread about Rush Limbaugh.

Eating sea cucumber should be all that gross considering people eat swine and insects regularly.
