What Food Do You Like That Other People Dont Like?

Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:27 am

Another Friday Stupid Thread.

I like to eat cauliflower, steamed or raw and I like Italian wedding soup, no one else in my family like these and Italian wedding is sort of hard to find in the store. What things do you like that no one else likes?

Hard to find unless you know a good butcher, but I love Pickled Beef Tongue. Takes a couple of hours to simmer, then peel the skin off and it's wonderful with some Djon Mustard.

Anchovies! Love them, straight out of the can....

I also like liver, and kidney. Loads of British people (especially my age) were brought up eating liver and bacon casserole, and steak and kidney pies.

Squid, and not the deep-fried calamari rings you get in restaurants. I'm talking the whole thing, tentacles and all prepared fried, but also braised, baked, and even grilled. Also love Octopus, olives (I do find a lot of people who hate olives), most types of fish (whole or filleted). I also love cilantro/coriander which seems to be one of the most, if not the most, polarizing herbs out there. I've found you either love it or hate it.

Food as in cuisine....not many people like Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, or Japanese/Sushi in Oklahoma, but those are my favorites! We have quite a few restaurants here in OKC for all of them, as well as Tulsa, but basically in small towns, about as "furrin'" as you get is Mexican. And when you look at those small town web forums or newspapers where you can post things online, they all gripe about those Mexicans being illegal. Yet, they ALL love going to eat their food. LOL. What a conundrum!

Sichuan rabbit head. Very few people like it. As a matter of fact, very few people even in China outside of Sichuan (and Shanxi) like it, but I love it!

It's basically the head of a rabbit, marinated in Sichuan spices. You eat the whole thing, as in the tongue, the cheeks, the brain, the eyes, everything. It's very tasty, although admittedly the spices overpower any other tastes, so you don't get the individual flavor of the tongue, the eyes, etc, but you do get the different textures.

It's usually eaten as a snack with beer while watching TV or playing mahjong.

Cheers

Peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches -- best with a dash of hot sauce on the pickles.

I've tried to convince several people that these are great, but nobody seems to believe me.

I have eaten those before without hot sauce. No big deal, really.

The foods people around me do not get why I eat are okra, collard grees, and venison (deer meat).

Mushroom soup, and then not the European way (without mushrooms but with only a mushroom taste).

I love it the Russian way, first going into the forest to pick them up, then dry them and in the winter make the soup and put about 10 in a cup per person, yummmm!

A nice "Beuschel", traditional food in Austria made of veal heart and lung. Very yummy although many people - especially of my age and younger - say only yuck to it (most of them without ever having eaten it).

I like a ton of stuff most people would find revolting. In my years in Mexico I got to experiment with lots of weird stuff. I really liked the more weird (to outsiders) taco varieties:

-Tacos de Cabeza (beef head stew basically)
-Tacos de ojo (beef eye)
-Tacos de Cesos (brain)
-Lengua (tongue)
-Tripas (beef small intestine, or alternatively cow udder insides)

And as a very unique appetizer, chapulines (grasshoppers). By far my most favorite, yet I rarely find places that serve them, even in places like Oaxaca where they are pretty popular.

Quoting Coal (Reply 6):

Now that looks like my next weird food I'd definitely love to try. I'm assuming the bones become very soft?

I've done something similar to that, without the sauce though. Next time I'll sauce 'em up with some Tabasco.

Ugh! Sorry, I dated a girl back in college who was obsessed with these and I tried it (well, only once) and couldn't stomach it. Separately, they're great. Together? I don't know why, but I don't like them. So more power to you!

As for myself? Anything offal really. Liver, kidneys, heart, tripe, and tongue. I've never tried brains or testicles. And one thing I can't get into yet are eyes. Something about those, I haven't crossed that line quite yet.

Okay, since we are being a little more specific than my original post, I can't find ANYONE, not even many Indians who like this:

Basically mixed Indian Pickles. You can't eat very much of it at one time because the taste is too intense, but they are good. My mouth is watering right now. I still haven't found the right kind yet. I need to ask the restaurant I go to which brand they use and if I can get them here.

I LOVE Indian pickles. I've tried some of the Patak's brand and their not bad at all for store bought. I've tried the garlic pickle and the eggplant pickle (which is sweeter than pickles tend to be), and they were both good. There's a recipe I've found online, but I can't find the main ingredient here (dossakai a type of sour Indian cucumber). I also love chutneys. Homemade cilantro chutney is amazing and is really versatile.

Check. Simply put, the liver is the detoxifier for digested foods and "stuff".

And that has what to do with the edibiliy / flavor of same, when being eaten ... ???

I'm going to have to ask my local Chinese eatery guy about the Sichuan rabbit heads. I missed that one when I was in China! Sounds entirely yummy, hope we can get it here in McCandless!

Automat restaurants used to be popular in many more places, including the US. There was an automat chain called Horn and Hardart a lot like FEBO, they were hugely popular from around World War I until into the 1960s, but they disappeared when modern "fast food" took over...

Friends of mine went to Iceland last Summer. They tried this dish. It's not something you consume in polite, non-Icelandic company. It hums rather.

There is a variation using Little Auks stuffed into the skin of a seal. Subsequently the skinfull of auks is sewn up and left outside for a few months under a pile of rocks where the auks rot. These tasty morsels help the inhabitants of the high north (Greenland, IIRC) get through the winter. However, eating this dish inside is strictly not done. The aroma is rather pungent.

I am surprised that the 'fly has not tried it in BKK.

I was brought up on offal and the likes. I love liver. I haven't had it for a while so I topped up my iron intake with loads of it on Friday for dinner. It's got to be Ox liver though. Kidneys are a fave of mine too, and have to be lambs kidneys.

I love rabbit too, it seems hard to find nowadays but did spy a butcher in Leeds market with whole rabbit, may have to treat myself one day.

I used to like Oxtail when I was young but do not know if I still like it as we haven't bought it for a long time as its quite expensive nowadays.

I guess it's the flavor of them that people don't like. But when cooked with some body part of a pig and spices, they are great.

OMG, it's the texture that makes me gag. Even looking at it makes me gag. I know it's supposed to be nutritious and go well with fruit, but it's just makes me think of milk curdling underneath the hot sun and being squirted in your mouth. Ewww. Not to mention, have you ever watched any of those videos on youtube where people pop abscesses? Eww, it looks like cottage cheese!

I don't know if people don't like it, but it seems to be rarely eaten: beef bone marrow.

First make a soup with the bones, then spread the marrow on some toast and add salt. Simply delicious!
Exceptions confirm the rule.

This will make you Spam musubis even better:

I've never seen that, but I'm going to have to look for it!

My grandmother used to take Spam and bake it with brown sugar and cloves on top, was quite tasty.

As impressed as I am by some of you, please let it be know that only Real Men eat Durian fruit:

Yep. I love Durian. I had a lot of those when we went to the Philippines last summer, the smell doesn't bother me. I like it when it's freezed or cold. Plus, I love Durian candy and Durian

Japanese natto (fermented soybeans)...a little bit of sauce, mustard, and then throw over hot rice. Hits the spot for breakfast or with dinner. Most non-Japanese who have lived there hate the stuff, and I believe Anthony Bourdain referred to it as "vile". Dunno why but I've always like it - it's good for you and the price can't be beat.

If you need someone to blame / throw a rock in the air / you'll hit someone guilty
