Friday Stupid Thread: Favourite Toast Topping

Fri Mar 11, 2011 12:21 pm

What is your favourite thing to eat on toast?

For me, it is marmalade, with cheese 2nd and honey 3rd.
My wife likes peanut butter and golden syrup.

What about you?

1. Marmite (yes, I'm a "lover" not a "hater"!).
2. Baked beans with a bit of grated cheese.
3. Toasted cheese with a bit of Worcester Sauce.

extra sharp cheddar cheese, lightly melted onto the toast, with a bit of blueberry preserves on top. Apricot or orange marmalade are OK too.

2nd choice would be honey and a wee bit of butter, and 3rd choice is a couple of fried eggs.

Love that too, but I doubt many in the USA will know what Lyle's Golden Syrup is. Tougher to find here.

It should probably be the unsweetened kind of peanut butter. But the cocoa/hazelnut/peanut taste is one of my guilty breakfast pleasures.

Marmalade if I'm having toast for breakfast but if it's more of a snack for lunch I'll have melted cheese with Worcester Sauce drizzled over it.

Used to love jam as a kid but can't stand it now for some reason!

I'm right there with ya, buddy! Especially if the marmalade is good and has a slightly bitter, fresh orange peel-y quality to it.

Thanks a lot. Now I've got a hankerin' for some fried eggs and toast... or better yet, a fried egg and fried bologna sandwich on toast with some sharp cheddar cheese melted on the egg.

Quoting SQuared (Reply 8):
a mixture of Nutella and Peanut Butter

That would be my mom's favorite toast topping.

To this list I'll add:
Apple butter
Blackberry preserves

I always use peanut butter. Sometimes jelly on top of the peanut butter, grape, rasberry, or strawberry. Sometimes applebutter on top of the peanutbutter.

Sometimes I'll eat it with peach jelly my mom makes, too (not at the same time as the Nutella). That's good stuff.

I'm old fashioned - butter and some sort of jam or jelly...grape, strawberry, blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry, any of these is fine.

Or cinnamon toast - butter than a dusting of cinnamon/sugar mixture.

Apple butter is good too, but better on a crumpet than regular toast.

Peanut butter and jam/jelly is (with addition of a top slice) a sandwich, and becomes lunch, not breakfast. (Hey, I admitted I'm old fashioned!    )

Baked beans might be a "boring" topping for toast in Ireland or England, but here in the US that's quite a radical idea. Just to be sure we're talking about the same type of "baked beans", here's the basic recipe for baked beans in the US-
1 can pork & beans
1 heaping tablespoon of yellow mustard
1 heaping tablespoon of tomato ketchup
1 tablespoon molasses
1/2 onion, chopped
Mix ingredients well and place in Pyrex baking dish. Top with slices of streaky bacon and place in 350 degree oven until bacon is done.
There are numerous regional variations, but that's the most basic version I know. Are Irish/British baked beans similar to that, or are they something else entirely?

Okay. I've never seen Heinz Baked Beans on store shelves here in the US, but a quick comparison of the ingredient lists revealed them to be more or less the same as Van Camp's Pork & Beans (the basis for US "baked beans"), except without the minimal amount of pork.
