Plant-based Bottle Created

Thu Mar 17, 2011 5:47 am

Coup for PepsiCo.

This should be a nice littler earner for the bottom line, especially if the technology can be on sold or adapted for other uses as well.

Not sure how much "testing" has been carried out by PepsiCo, the article is a little light on with detail, but I'd figure this could revolutionize every industry/business that has a use for plastics.

Imagine how this will change things without having to use petroleum in the manufacturing process.. Now if we could do the same for rubber, that would be even better.

They say that the bottle is 100% identical to the current one on a molecular level. Pity... not degradable.

I'm guessing a degradable plastic bottle would start degrading as soon as you put water in it. It still can be recycled. Plants were used even before oil to make plastic, so it's not really new, it just was cheaper to use oil.

Coke is rather corrosive. It may be difficult to develop a bottle which can withstand its intended content but still degrades well.

There are already plant-based DEGRADABLE plastic bottles on the market for water.... as Klaus said, the issue may be the citric acid content of soda.

But remember that if more can be done with plant content than the current methods a lot of petrochemical ingredients can be freed up which will impact oil need and prices.

i would love for the bottle to be biodegradable as much as anyone but I do like the idea that it would cut down on the use of petroleum. I think it is great that they are using food scraps amongst other things to alleviate the waste and turn it into something productive. Well done PepsiCo.

Is the congressional majority boycotting it yet in the Capitol cafeteria?
