A.net Meeting AMS 28-MAY-2011 (and 29-MAY)

Mon Mar 28, 2011 8:54 pm

Previous (planning) thread

Foreseen schedule:

SATURDAY, 28-MAY
up to roughly 1100h: Group meets at Visitors Terrace at AMS
Depending on weather, group relocates for photography to other location, for example "Polderbaan".
Saturday evening: Informal dinner at some restaurant downtown Amsterdam. Some Chinese / Thai cuisine ?

SUNDAY, 29-MAY (optional)
Check weather.
Either more spotting at AMS or a visit to Aviodrome near Lelystad.
For those first time visitors to Amsterdam, a self-guided touristic tour of Amsterdam could be an option.
If weather is warm enough: Hit the beaches near Zandvoort or the likes.

List of attendants starts with reply #1

See you at Schiphol !

I’m very interested and if I don’t have a gig during that weekend I’ll pour some Diesel into the tank and taxi into one of AMS’s parking garages.

It worked out for me to get the weekend off so I'm now on the confirmed list. I'm staying at the IBIS AMsterdam Schipol for 67€/night.

Regarding dinner Saturday evening....how about Indonesian/Surinamese? Chinese/Thai are not that special. There are large Indonesian/Surinamese communites in NL, I'm sure there are some good restaurants to choose from around town. Just a thought........

Sounds good. I am open for most cuisines.

I have not decided yet if I will come by car or by airplane.
Train is an outside chance, although 99 € return in First Class to Schiphol is a good deal, but train takes almost 5 hours and the 2-hourly schedule only marginally suits my needs on the return on Monday.
But flight is more than 300 € on KL ...

Mode of transportation also will depend on whether I can reschedule a business appointment on Friday morning or not.

For the time being I have made a reservation at my favorite hotel located half way between Amsterdam and Utrecht in Breukelen. Will use this one only if coming by car.

If arriving by aircraft I think I will stay at the Citizen M at Schiphol rather than some downtown location.
In case of train ride the same is likely, as my train goes to Schiphol not to Centraal.

OK this is looking better for me. I am due to be flying MAH-CWL on the 27th, so I will now look at CWL-AMS the following day, or at any other MAH-AMS options I can afford if they work out at a reasonable price.

Things are taking shape that I will come by car provided I find a solution for the warning light that came up recently complaining about an in-op EGR valve. Either replace or ignore it for the remaining shelf-life of that car, which I estimate to be less than 2 years.

Don't worry, the Netherlands are not earthquake prone. And the most vocal and radical politician (Geert Wilders) is in court on charge of inciting hatred. In his trial he and his lawyer Bram Moszkowicz are making a right mockery of the whole process.

There's always the risk for flooding though.

Added to the confirmed list. Would really love to have European fare for dinner as we're coming all that way. But we're easy. We'll be there for several days if anyone would like to meet up other than the 28th!

The reconstruction work in my garden is almost finished, so I hope I will be able to pay more attention to organizing this meeting, especially trying to find a restaurant for Saturday evening. Indonesian cuisine had been suggested which would go well with me.

The problem with my car's EGR valve also has been rectified: The day after I had ordered a replacement valve the warning light went out and never came back; this is after having been illuminated for 3 weeks in a row: I now hesitate to install the new valve and likely will keep it as spare sitting around - and as a warning to my car, not to play tricks on me ... hehe D:

Split decision here.
The train ride between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Centraal is short and has a good frequency.
Staying downtown makes strolling around in the (late) evening easier as one can walk home.
OTOH, hotel rates appear to be higher downtown compared to the airport.

For those lazy guys like me, who hate to ride a hotel shuttle bus between the airport and an airport hotel (to my interpretation, an "airport hotel" has to be within walking distance to the terminal, not a 15-minutes shuttle bus ride away ...), the Citizen M Schiphol could be an option. Especially for single travelers (the room gets a bit cramped with two adults) arriving by aircraft. Walking distance to Schiphol Plaza (= train stations, restaurants, terminals, ...).

Arriving by car, I will set up tent in Breukelen again at the local Van der Valk hotel there (trading as "Breukelen"), just off motorway A2.
I am adding a hotel list ...

It's looking better for me, and if so I'll be flying standby arriving on Saturday. Either on KLM, unless I have a Friday afternoon meeting, or via LHR, which would mean I would arrive after 1100. I'll confirm when able.

I will attend as well. I have off and even if I am invited to a party on Saturday evening, I will come along for a couple hours. I will be there around 11 and leave around 5pm or so...

At what spot do we meet on the panorama deck? I have never been there and I heard it is pretty big.. Any suggestions?

I am not a big fan of meeting at the panorama deck, because it is so big. I'd prefer a meetup somewhere outside the terminal where it is not so crowded. Maybe underneath the footbridge connecting the airport with the WTC and Hilton/Sheraton hotel?

http://www.schiphol.nl/Travellers/AtSchiphol/Maps.htm has a map of Schiphol Plaza.
Once landside and next to the open space atop the railway station (still indoors), look for Burger King ("D" on the map).
Walk past it into direction of "Food Village" supermarket (#12) on the map.
Left of it is a flight of stairs leading to the observation deck. Once outside, there will be a second set of stairs (or an elevator).
Once another level up, you will have views of aircraft. Walk a few more steps and the (hopefully) will be some benches with tables around.
I suggest to meet there as it gives the option of having some distraction while participants drop in.
I will try to be from around 1015h (or so), depending on traffic . and will try to set up some sign.

Sad to hear, but I fully understand that a trip to Iceland beats a meeting at Schiphol any time.
See you around.

I selected the Panorama Deck / Observation Deck as it gives distraction while participants drop in one by one.

I'm looking forward to this meeting. Have you already decided on how to move over the airport? I don't know if the Polderbaan spotters place is reachable by bus. Also I'm not sure if it's still possible to travel on public transport without having a chip cart. Maybe one of the other locals know how this works.

The western side of the Polderbaan is accesible by bus, but you will need to walk 45 minutes I would guess (line 300, stop Vijfhuizen). The eastern side is not accessible by bus. Having said that, it is no longer accesible by car either as it is not allowed to park there. You're not even allowed to stop there, but if there are no cops I'll drive there drop you guys of and drive back to Boesingheliede to park. If there are cops, you're walking with me!

Edited to add: In the Amsterdam area a chipcard is mandatory in public transport.

Is that like an all day pass that you purchase from a vending machine?

I am not too familiar with public transport, especially not in Amsterdam where they likely have special (tourist) cards that are not available in the area I live.

Have you ever been to Washington DC? The chipcard is similar to the Smartrip system used there, or similar to the Oyster card in London. For more information you can try the website of Amsterdam's transit authority, www.gvb.nl/english

For frequent riders on visit any of the 24 / 48 / 72/...-hour tickets could be an option.

I think, we should have enough car capacity at hand. No need to worry about reaching Polderbaan on public transport.

I'm most familiar with that. You can purchase them from the ticket machine which works. Shame I can't act as ignorant as I did in PRG. The gates were wide open so I figured weekends were free. Only later was I informed I had become an infamous "black rider"!!

As I will be there by car, I can take 4 people with me... But maybe not back as I leave around 5pm... but until then I can take them with me to the runways.
