No, I'm sure LH will downgrade the trip to a skoda or Kia. I want Audi (if that's what you're driving)

It´s not looking good for me... I really would like to get to know all of you personally, but I have some important appointments and deadlines regarding my university graduation in the days after that weekend... I guess I can´t really justify it (to myself) to take one or two days off there. ...  But the next time I will be there

In the Amsterdam area a chipcard is mandatory in public transport.

Negative.

You can buy oneway valid tickets with the driver. e.g. Bus line 300 from airport to westside of Polderbaan (direction Haarlem on the bus) is EUR 4.- and you pay cash with the driver.

btw I will try to join also, depending on actual situation at work.

I will try to be from around 1015h (or so), depending on traffic . and will try to set up some sign.

Depending on whether I take the direct flight from IAH (arrvs 820a local) or CO70 from EWR (arrvs 745a local) I may go to my hotel and drop my bags and then return to the airport and the observation deck. Depending on the plans for the evening I may leave early and take a nap prior to dinner.

On Sunday we are going where? Decided yet or not?

Now we approach the time when for various reasons those on the confirmed list fall away quickly.

I'm most familiar with that. You can purchase them from the ticket machine which works. Shame I can't act as ignorant as I did in PRG. The gates were wide open so I figured weekends were free. Only later was I informed I had become an infamous "black rider"!!

Now that is funny!!! I hope the metro cops didn´t catch you!! Prague has a weird system in public transportation, anyone can basically ride for free if they are willing to risk a 25 euro fine if caught!

Nothing decided yet. I suppose if the weather is favourable Schiphol, if not the museum at Lelystad and/or Soesterberg?

I might also book a hotel in the area so I can see a bit of the Amsterdam nightlife and to avoid having to drive to Schiphol twice.

The military aviation museum at Soesterberg AB looks nice with a good collection.
And with its free entrance we could decide on the spot to cut a visit short for any reason ...
Aviodrome, OTOH, charges 15.75 € entrance fee.

Both locations offer the option to include some sightseeing driving.

Agreed, that the area around Aviodrome can look boring to some eyes. And Lelystad itself also hardly is something to write home about. But ...
- is the Batavia still moored in Lelystad ?
- Muiden is small place to pass through and show off to an American guy, as can be Weesp.
- Naarden with its old fortification.
- Enkhuizen with its marina, reached driving along the dike separating Markermeer from the Ijsselmeer

_________
Suited as excursion for a visit to Soesterberg:
- drive along the Amsterdam-Rijn-Kanal from Driemond via Nigtevecht to Loenen aan de Vecht.
- and particularly, drive along the river Vecht from Maarssen to Breukelen, but not west of the river (N402), but on the much smaller road on the east. Lots of old merchants mansions around there. Rich merchants from A'dam who were seeking the peace and tranquility there (along the Vecht) in 16/17th century.

If you are going to one of the museums or AMS on Sunday I will not be joining the group. However, if you are going to do some Dutch sightseeing I will be around.

I will keep myself on the confirmed list for the moment but if the ash threatens to cause cancellations or big diversions that could mean restricted payloads, then I'll have to pass. mid-term weather forecast ain't too good for Saturday:
winds from the southwest at 5 bft, temps around 17°C / lower 60's F, cloudy with a chance for some rain.
Similar to slightly better on Sunday, with winds changing to westernly dirctions.

Looks like my attendance to an A.net Meeting once again attracts inclement weather.

Well we are two for two on seismic events so far this year. Last year you were at PRG and that was an absolutely beautiful day.

Right now I would say the odds are I will attend. Seems like the volcano is settling down with the ash only rising to 5km and not dispersing anywhere nearly as far as last year. If it continues like this I will take the chance and come on over. I'll make my final decision on Thursday so as not to get charged for a night at the hotel if I decide not to come.

Yes, but keeping the Scotts in their country means more beer for the rest of us!

Thankfully, unlike last years long lasting eruption, each passing day has seen a decrease in the amount of earthquakes as well a lowering of the height into the atmosphere of the ash cloud itself.

I hope the erupting volcano in Iceland will not keep you from attending the AMS meet-up.

Maybe they will re-route the flights? They cannot keep their passengers stranded for too long. It would be too much money lost for the airlines so I hope they will find an alternate solution and you will be able to go to the AMS meet-up and fly back without problems.

EDIT:
Weather update for Saturday: Winds from Southwest @ 4-5 bft, gusts up to 7 bft.
I think, we will have to see if it makes increases sense to hang around Polderbaan in such a strong wind, as there is absolutely no shelter available.

Hi everyone, looking forward to the meeting on Saturday. If I'm not mistaken we're to meet Saturday morning at 11:00 at the entrance to the panorama deck? Do a bit of viewing their and then move on another location in the afternoon?

What about Saturday evening? Organised group dinner or everyone just meet somewhere downtown for drinks and then go off on their own from there. There was the suggestion of Indonesian food? Anyone from AMS know of a decent place?

Well in any case looking forward to Saturday. Good trips to all those attending from far away.

Slight correction: Not at the ENTRANCE (= bottom of stairs) to the panorama deck, but please make your way upstairs (= 2 flights of stairs) until you actually have aircraft in view.
And we are talking about the north-western corner of the Panorama Deck, with its entrance past Burger King at Schiphol Plaza, the public hall atop the railway station.
I will try to set up a sign for our group, provided it does not get blown away by some gusts.
Reminder to myself: Bring along some tape !

Quoting cgnnrw (Reply 88):

Correct. Depnding on group's decision and weather, plan is to drive over to the Spotterplats at western side of Polderbaan (18R/36L).
This is at the very end of Ijweg in Hofddorp (rough position 52.342471,4.705882 for any mapping device).

As I am issuing my ticket right now, I should be considered as confirmed. Will arrive by OK616 at about nine, so will be the terrace by the time of the meet. Unfortunately I will most probably have to leave in the evening as I have some chores at home. But I am looking forward to meting you all and to seeing Schiphol again... so move to confirmed
there is no coincidence

There was the suggestion of Indonesian food?

Anyone who has one to recommend from the following list ?

http://www.amsterdam-eating.com/cuisines/indonesian.asp

I checked some of the higher recommended ones (on an other website) on Utrechtsestraat ... - and I think we need to agree for a range of a budget for dinner.

Considering the weather forecast, is the spotting saturday still on or are there plans to go to the Aviodrome and/or Military Aviation Museum in Soesterberg.

What is with the weather forecast? I see it is rather windy, but chance of rain of 4% and temperature 16°C. Not the best, but still ok I would say.

Edited because I was looking at a cached weather forecast. Still not great, but ok:
The KNMI reports say 40% chance for rain, 20% chance for sun (sunday 20% & 50%).
