Habit(s) You Wish You Didn't Have

Sat May 07, 2011 3:50 am

I know we all have habits that we wish we didn't have, here are a few of mine

1) Procrastination

I know I'm not alone. Though when it comes to school projects I usually do it ahead of the due date since I like being creative and all of that. BUT when it comes to homework, though I see the point of it as a review and a practice, it's just a little thing that's a big burden to me. Honestly, when I get an assignment for every class, I do it right away to get rid of it sine I know it's going to take a long time. But there are some days that there's just one small homework that I'll just put away for later then eventually I forget about it and panic in the morning.

2) I'm Conceited

Back in middle school, I was an average student surrounded by those super genius and robotic people I call friends. But honestly I only gave half the effort, so even with a humble 94% Average, I placed 15th in my class of 32. Now that I'm in high school, I started to give more effort and became more competitive. I've managed to be on the honor roll for every class I'm in with the lowest grade being a 92. Though there are some real competitions, I'm ahead of most of my friends and classmates. Because of this, I make sarcastic and boastful remarks (though in a friendly manner) about how smart I am. Everytime I make that remark, I feel really bad inside though I couldn't stop it. I felt so inferior in middle school, actually, I felt so dumb in middle school though I still loved that experience. I was that hyper, care-free and average middle school student, now I'm a robotic, goal-minded and conceited high school student. I feel really bad, though I couldn't stop it. I keep remembering the time how I was behind all these alpha omega people, the Straight A students, the people I call my friends, now I have become them and my new friends has become the old me.

3) I Can't Say No

"Can I get a Dollar?" , "Do you have a pencil I can borrow?", "Can I get a pen?", "Can I get a sheet of paper?", "Can I copy your homework?" YES. YES. YES and YES. Though I'm starting to get rid of this because of the habit I developed as mentioned above.

My Worse Habit:

When I get criticized, I die a little bit inside

Now this is the worse IMO. Although I'm confident, when I get criticized or yelled at for something that I have done (especially in school) my heart sinks and I start to tell myself how stupid and careless I am to do such a thing. Even if the teacher just tells me to "Be quiet" which is rarely, I still get that weird feeling inside me that I have failed. I still struggle with this until today, every single word that people say no matter how pointless or harmless, I translate it to something bad and I feel so bad. Those words feels like an echo in my mind, going back and forth and they stay there for a long time. For example, last month, i wasn't able to return the book that I have borrowed in our school library since i had no free time, it was only 2 days late and the librarian in a semi-angry manner told me "You're supposed to return it last Monday!" After that, my whole day got ruined. I wished I hadn't borrowed that book, How could I be so irresponsible?? etc, etc. Even gestures from people, if I think they're talking about me, I immediately come to a conclusion that I did something wrong or I'm acting too weird for them. It's something that I have dealt for a very long time, when I do get into a big trouble, I start to have these seizure attacks, my eyes twitches and I end up fainting. I've had these spaz attacks ever since 2nd grade, every year until now except 3rd grade. The worse case was when it happened on the staircase in my school, I fell down and I was hospitalized. I know it sounds crazy and stupid, though I'm trying to contain my emotions, still trying.

Terrible Habit:

Biting my nails. Sometimes until they bleed. And I have had periods of time where I stop for about 2 months, then think they are too long and bite them off. I am thinking about stopping again for good this time.

Hope I can actually do it...lol

Cracking and popping just about every joint in my body on a daily basis. My back is the worst and I fear I'll probably mess it up for no good reason if I don't stop. A few semesters ago I was in a drug education class and we had to abstain from a bad habit for the entire semester and write our final paper on our experience. Had many slips throughout the semester, and needless to say have fully relapsed.

Hmmm...probably:

-waking up early. Can't help it, no matter how late I went to bed or how tired I am, I can't sleep past 7 or 8 in the morning.

-sticking to routines - - during the first two years of college I had the exact same lunch every day, a ham and cheese sandwich and a coke (all for $2.00). Didn't help that I was broke and this was the cheapest lunch around, but what's my excuse now? I make decent money, work in downtown Washington, DC, with like 3 million options for lunch, and still pack a ham and cheese sandwich for lunch every stinking day.

-walking/moving/running/being active - - I can't sit down for more than 45-60 minutes at a time, I have to get up and do something. Watching a Formula 1 race? I'm standing up while watching it. At work? I'm the only idiot trying to type while on my feet. Going to work? I'd rather walk the 2.5 miles instead of doing the sensible (normal) thing and taking the bus or the Metro.

I'm sure I got more but those are the ones that spring to mind right now...

3) I Can't Say No

I am really bad with this in particular with the stands in shopping centres to point a couple of years ago I was in Darwin and I ended up buying $120 on beauty products I didn't really want in the first place It's still sitting in my bathroom. A few months later I was in Christchurch and I was stopped at a similar stand but that time luckily I didn't have money on me so I got out of it. I'm not so bad now but now I'm always getting stopped at charity stands who insist on regular direct debit transactions for a set amount of time and when you try to say your not interested they always have a line ready like "what about the dying children don't you wan't to do something to help them" or similar I generally just tell them I don't give that information out but I'd be happy to make a one off donation which they say isn't possible then I just walk off. It's gotten to the point where I will actively avoid going anywhere near them because once they make eye contact I can't bring myself to ignore them I have to stop and talk knowing full well where it will lead. I also have gotten myself accidentally prospected into mlm schemes like amway or similar last time I faked a family emergency to get the heck out of there and the asshole was still trying to stop me from leaving.

This is another problem I have if anyone criticises me no matter how small I will take it personally how I screwed up and it will put me in a bad mood for the next few hours.

Another bad habit I have is if I nervous or anxious I will chew most likely a pen without thinking.

Also I will often get "shakes" where body will just twitch varying from minor shakes I can barely feel to ones where I have trouble standing. I have been sent to the relevent specialists who have given me every test under the sun with no explanation. I'm not that worried about it but it is embarrassing when I have a shake at work in front of a customer or colleague and they freak out.

Another bad habit I hate is I sometimes tell lies nothing really bad but things like when I'm talking about a story or something I did I will automatically change a few details and embellish my story to make it sound interesting to the other person.

1) My weekend smoking. I have tried my damned hardest to kick the habit, I chew nicotine gum all week long. But come the weekend when I go have a cocktail at a club or bar, I need to have that freakin' cig. Drives me nuts.

2) Putting myself down/seeing myself in a bad light. I know I kick ass at my jobs, and I can be a bit of a bitch at times, but ever since my divorce from my hubby in 2009, I simply cannot stop putting myself down. Despite dropping 9 pant sizes after the divorce, I still see myself as being as big as a house even though I'm not (and yes, I have a strict diet and exercise routine so I am keeping on top of things). Despite being told plenty of times that I am handsome, I just feel that I look old. Even though I am a single guy with bills to pay and am doing okay "making it" (which let's face it, isn't easy for a single person to do in this economy when working for an airline), I still feel like I am a financial failure. I got my B.S. in Aviation Administration in 2003 and could not find the time or the effort to start my Masters, and even though I found a job in what I studied, I feel like I have failed because I havent taken the extra step in my education. This entire thing is a BAD habit and for whatever reason, I just can't re-wire my brain to kick it. GRRRRRR!!!!!

1) I'm too nice to people, I do a lot of things and expect nothing in return. It makes me feel as if they may try to take advantage of that. I find it hard to say no and think my friends will start thinking I'm an asshole. If my friend asks me to do a beer run for him I'll probably do it even though he lives in the next town over. I have started to say no to people. If I'm with someone and they want a ride while I'm going home and it's on the way, sure I'm fine with that. But if it's a far distance I either won't do it or expect gas money.

2) I spend way too much time on the internet. If I spend less than 4 hours a day that's very unusual, unless I'm out and occupied with other things. Normal if I'm home would be 7 to 9 hours a day. A couple of times I've been on it for 13 to 14 hours. I get food and go to the bathroom then come right back. Yea..it's pretty bad lol

3) I can be very stubborn. If I'm sick and I want to do something I'll still do it. I'll take meds and off I go. Not sure if this counts as a bad habit..

Oops, I don't know how I forgot procrastination. When I was in high school in the later years I waited til the last minute to do most of my homework or I just didn't do it. In grade 11 I had to do my final project for English. I did it the morning it was due. Seriously, it was due at 09:00 and I started at 07:00. >_> I did finish it and got a 66%..not bad for less than and hour and half's work. I start college in September, I must not be like this or I'm screwed.

VERY guilty of that, and being in college hasn't helped me improve on this one bit!

Absolutely, its a huge part of my personality as well that I wish was different.

I can't afford to go out much (jobless, full time student living at home), so I often have the computer on the vast majority of the time I'm awake.

Personally, some habits I wish I didn't have include not always finishing what I started (I get very distracted from certain tasks, though when I'm committed to a task, I always put 100% into it), caring excessively what others think of me, and not being as proactive about bettering myself as I should. I know I'm definitely not living up to my potential, but its hard for me to get past the negative mindset and take some action!

1) I bite my nails and have for at least 10 years
2) I have a tendency to leave stuff everywhere (I use something and don't put it back)
3) I'm a terrible procrastinator. I always would start a paper 2-3 weeks before it's due and still be working on it an hour or two before I hand it in).
4) I'm very often hypocritical. I hate others for playing with their phones while driving (which is illegal) but I'll do it myself sometimes.

1) Procrastination. Champion at it. I have been able to manage to get out of it for a few weeks but then after a long holiday I fall back into the same old pattern

2) Browsing the internet and wasting a lot of time as a result. It's so easy to browse for a bit longer when you need to study for that upcoming exam.

Nevertheless, I think I'm far from alone in both cases

This topic is terrible, is this the best you could do?

Repeating myself. I have a habit of thinking people didn't understand what I told them, so I end up repeating myself when it's not necessary.

Counting everything. I can tell you how many notes are in my favourite songs, how many steps there are from my office to the coffee machine, how many tiles there are in my bathroom etc. etc.

Repeating myself. I have a habit of thinking people didn't understand what I told them, so I end up repeating myself when it's not necessary.

1. Procrastination. My motto has always been "Desperation is a wonderful motivator."

2. Biting my nails. Been doing it for as long as I can remember.

3. Not drinking enough water. I can go with very little and have to make a concerted effort to get in 8 glasses a day.

4. Staying up too late. I work until 12:00am and can't go straight to sleep when I get home, so I'm usually up until 4am or later.

5. Spending too much time online. 'Nuff said.

I guess a lot of us has procrastination as a bad habit that they wish they didn't have. I know I procrastinate on almost everything, to the point where sometimes it has cost me. I'm onto my second degree now, studying law at the moment. I have an assignment due on Monday, which isn't complete yet (I'm about half way through), so it'll be a long weekend with virtually no sleep for me (doesn't help that Corporations Law is an incredibly complex but dry subject). So far I've never handed in an assignment late during the course of this degree. The story is very different with my first time at university: almost everything I handed in was late.

Sometimes I can be rather abrupt with my speech and actions, and when I finally realize the offense it may have caused, I tend to dwell on it too much and feel really bad afterwards. I really should think more before I speak.

1) Exercise: I hate to exercise. Athough I´ve lost 30 pounds since February after I joined the gym and it´s completely made my diabetes go away. Bye bye insuline, and now I manage with one Metformine a day. Still, I hate the gym. It bores me, to death. And it´s not Iike I can´t do my routine. And I know it´s a matter of life and death for me, it´s also gotten my bloood pressure back to normal numbers, but still.

2) No Customer Service Skills: I can´t help my brother with his business, a successful bar/pub because the first patron that acts like an ass when I´m serving him, boy, does he regret it. That´s whay I never take such jobs, you come to me debating and yelling the amount of alcohol on your drink good luck wth being served nicely. We have a standard measure you know. If you are nice, we may give you a bit more.

3) Staying up all night: There are so many things to do at night and it is so quiet. Of course the next day I´m acting like a zombie, but I just love to stay past 4AM. Some nights I realized I never went to bed.

4) Afraid of heights: Need a rooftop view? Want a date on an amusement mark? Forget it. Heights just drive me nuts.

this may sound weird but I like all my habits, it's part of who I am.
a) Bite my nails but not until they bleed, since it hurts and I hate the sight of blood.
b) I do this thing where I rub my fingers together in a weird fashion whenever I'm concentrating or excited. this happens a lot on a daily basis and people have called me out on it many times but I just tell them it's a habit.

Everyone has bad habits but you just have to watch out for the ones that can kill you i.e. smoking, drugs, alcohol, etc. Of course, if you don't like some of your habits you can always change them, you just have to set up a plan and stick to it.

I try my best to be on time but I end up Very early instead. Its not a bad thing but when I arrive 30-45 minutes earlier than the rest I'm invariably loosing time per day that can be utilized elsewhere.

I try to slow down but just does not work........The worry of not being late gets be arriving too early.
