The Snowglobe thread got me a bit nostalgic, and lead me to re-read the FLAIRPORT threads, as well as one by Shinkai and the NWOrientDC10's "Public Apology" thread. Still makes me laugh.

I was wondering, what are some of the other, perhaps more recent, train wrecks on this site?

There was one started by "ProudQatari" several years ago..can't remember what it was about, nor can I seem to find it but it went downhill fast. Then there was one about OYRJA and his clogs...that was an epic thread..not so much fail, just epic.

The infamous Shinkai as well... the thread where he asks what a snowglobe is and how its used for flight tracking was pure entertainment! Those were different times, it really brought me back to read that one.

AFAIK that is the single longest most-posted-on thread ever on a.net. And nobody could reach an agreement!

Though any person with a measurable IQ should know the plane takes off

I dunno...MythBusters got ahold of the debate and I can't help but think that thread had a lot to do with it. They claimed on the show that a plane taking off on a conveyor was the most debated subject chosen for the show of all time. That's pretty cool.

But if I so much as dare post a random woman in a 1920's victorian swimsuit or a burka I get my post deleted.

exactly. There was even an episode on Mythbusters which settles the matter once and for all!

In case anyone is still confused, an airplane takes off from having air flowing over its wings at high enough speed to generate lift. Since an aircrafts speed through the air comes from engine thrust (rather than through the wheels like a car) it does not matter if it is on a fixed surface or a conveyor belt (although it might damage a few tyres due to their rotational speed). The only scenario where a conveyor belt makes any difference at all is if the aircraft has its brakes on and the conveyor belt accelerates the aircraft forward (like a catapault on an aircraft carrier kinda). However as soon as the aircraft took off it would come back down again due to no thrust (unless the engines were also running).

There was a thread about 4 years ago, posted just before I got my nystagmus surgery in 2007. I remember it because I was going between The Price is Right and the thread, and there was nothing better for me to do than cruise A.net.

Some guy, I think his name was Evan767 or something, posted in the NonAv thread about wanting to bypass the privacy setting on MySpace to see if a girl (or girls) were talking shit about him.

I'm sure if I look at my post history or I do a thorough search for it, I'll find it...unless it got tossed away by the Mods. After the thread turned into a gong show, he started PMing me, asking whether or not the FBI was going to come after him for breach of security reasons.

Not exactly FLAIRPORT, but worth a laugh if I can find it.

I'm VERY naive. I'd always thought the purpose of patdowns had been to look for powder like the Christmas Day bomber had, not an object. So then I thought if the TSA had dust rollers, they'd be able to pick up any powder present and posted a thread thinking I had a viable solution. After it was deleted and I mentioned it to my mom, and she told me it was an object they were looking for. I felt pretty stupid after that. I've said my share of stupid things here without realizing it, but that (deleted) thread was definitely an epic fail.

FLAIRPORT's were classics, and, as someone else mentioned, propilot83's posts titled My Letter to the Unicef CEO and My Letter to the CEO of WWF were classics. Complete trainwrecks, especially when the poster's other dubious, non ANET actions were discovered.

One of my all time favorites, though, was from ages ago. I mentioned it before, but Ironchain was complaining about his uncle's horrible treatment on America West. He said that they basically cursed the guy out, sent him an insulting voucher for only five dollars, and that he was planning on writing a letter to HP headquarters. There were holes in his story and people started shouting BS right and left. That train totally left the tracks and crashed into a deep ravine. Hilarious stuff, especially when someone (I forget who) posted a picture of the voucher that Ironchain couldn't prove existed.

It was so funny, I saved the picture on my hard drive. The thread is here- HP Lost My Business.

And thanks for the reminder of TWFirst. I had totally forgotten about some of his stuff.
