It launches tomorrow, Wednesday, July 20th. http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/19/...aunches-tomorrow-on-mac-app-store/

Not completely sure about how the free upgrade works. I should think that you should get a free download through the App Store.

Lion is to be released tomorrow (Wednesday). MacRumors ( macrumors.com ) is as good a sight as any to check out.

It will be a download from the AppStore and (I believe) you only pay once for all copies in your house. You just have to ensure you have the current Snow Leopard (10.6.8) before getting Lion.

Also, once you buy it, make a dvd backup - both for the stated purpose, and to make you installs on other machines easier.

The best part is that you can log into the AppStore with your iTunes account and down load from the other Macs in your family. Pretty nice, really. I was expecting to buy the Family Pack again.

I probably won't upgrade to Lion for my iMac and MacPro workstation - the download will be too large. I'd prefer to buy it on a DVD, even if it costs a bit more. It's more convenient for me to walk past the Apple store near my work and buy it.

Sounds good - I'll upgrade the two OSX machines, although the MBP doesn't get much use anymore with the ipad around....

Many thanks for the update . Lucky I have unlimited download allowance on my internet package so it wont be an issue. I only bought my new iMac on 8th July so the free offer is very welcome. I will keep an eye out today on how to obtain the free download. Really looking forward to it as it looks great.

Can you download it? It tells me it is unavailable when I try. Perhaps there is too much traffic on their server.

Bloody hell, I want to get it now, but I forgot before I traveled half way round the world from LA that the credit card number that I have on the system is an old one. Now, I need to wait a few hours until the number can be passed on from there....

Damn.

Running it here, Had a couple of teething problems.

Adium was looking for a file I nolonger had and I had to Re-Install iTunes BETA3 to work with my Library (and sync with my phone)

Only having a Trackpad on my iMac is making it slightly confusing, as the trackpad gestures have been completely turned on their head.

Seems fine otherwise.

Downloading now... should take an hour or so. I'm just interested in how the gestures will work on my older MacBook- It supports some gestures, but I know it won't do all the new Lion gestures.

FYI:

Quote:
Apple said Wednesday that Lion would be available in August on a USB thumb drive—similar to the recovery drive that ships with the MacBook Air—for $69. Apple hasn't said if it will stock these at its retail stores, but it will definitely be available to order online.

Am I the only one who doesn't see a point, even at $30? Snow Leopard is an exceptional OS and works wonderfully, plus...

-I like the email the way it is.
-I hate the magic mouse and trackpad; I'm perfectly happy with point and click.
-Multiple desktops: useless.
-Mission control: Practically already exists as my F3 key... and is useless anyway.
-Launchpad: useless (I already have icons for everything on my desktop, why do I need another page of icons behind it?)
-App store: Already have it.
-Autosave: useless, unless "command s" is so tough you cant do it once in a while.
-AirDrop: Nifty, but practically useless because only 1 in 30 people have another mac, and it won't work with my iphone.

So basically it's $30 for full screen Safari (as if I was having trouble reading it the way it is) and a couple other tweeks- minus the loss of several programs that only run on Snow Leopard. Did I mention I HATE GESTURES on computers?

The only reason I see to download Lion is to be "hip" and have something shiny and new.

I've been using this for a few hours now and I don't really like it. The main problem is that in Safari and Finder when I want to go back or forward, I usually would just use three fingers and swipe left or right but that's stopped working on Lion.. Now when I do it just just takes me to my desktop (when Safari is in fullscreen mode) or to the dashboard.. It may sound like quite a small thing but for me it is quite an important thing and one of my favourite features about macs.

I hope there will be a fix for this! Anyway, apart from that it doesn't really seem that much diferent to Snow Leapord.. I'll just have to get used to the new scrolling thing (which should be easy as I have a iPhone and iPad but I'm finding it pretty hard at the moment!)

We'll see how it goes...

(Edit: Figured out how to change the 3 finger swipe back to normal! Feel rather stupid as it was only 3 clicks..)

Well, I like it. My BlackBook runs faster. And, unlike others are saying, I find Launchpad interesting. I can start any app in my Applications folder on the go, without going to Applications. I keep my desktop clean; no icons there. While my Doc has many, it's still not always all.

I am in no hurry either……….I will wait and see.
Quite chuffed with my "10.6 rather snowy" animal, and I don´t see any arguments (yet?) as to why I should change to Lion at this point.

One thing I did notice on this thread: "FLY2HMO" does not seem to be here to piss on all MAC user´s strawberries!
Interesting posts, always; but he really got going when people praised anything to do with Apple.
In fact, I haven´t seen him for a while now on this forum……….is he "gone"?

Most major changes are in the infrastructure, and quite a few of them are substantial.

Some of the interesting points from my point of view:
- changed document handling
- volume-level encryption
- Time Machine enhancements, notably full functionality with File Vault and also with an encrypted backup volume

The extensive review by John Siracusa is well worth a read for anybody interested in Lion or in OS technology in general (as every time so far):
