Cars That Are Faster Than A Motorcycles?

Sun Jul 24, 2011 10:36 pm

I look at a Jet ski as to a speed boat as a motorcycle is to a car, but speed boats are faster than jet skies, but motorcycles are faster than cars. Now there some cars that are faster than motorcycle, and one is the Bugatti EB Veyron. Could any body think of another car that faster than a motorcycle?

Define "faster".
Faster where? Straight line? Road course?

A fast car will eat up a fast bike in the twisties. Check the times at any road course. Can't beat the physics of all that grip.

Motorcycles will generally accelerate much faster than most cars, but tend to have a lower top speed.

I was thinking the same. There are a lot of small displacement motorcycles that are slower than cars. I rented a Honda Phantom up in northern Thailand which is a chopper style motorcycle but only powered by a small 196cc engine. It had a little pep off the line but it ran out of steam pretty quick. You're average sedan with a V6 or V8 can beat that bike, even off the line. Even a V6 Toyota Camry can beat that bike off the line.
Perhaps the question should be; "What Bikes Are Slower Than Cars?"

"Faster is relative" If you take a "fast car" and a "fast" bike around a track, the bike would struggle in the corners while the car would struggle in the straightaways. This is all relative and it depends on the track, which cars/bikes you chose and weather conditions.

Though to the motorcycle's credit for very little money you can buy a bike that is basically the same as its racing equivalent. Some noob with a fresh motorcycle endorsement and $10-$12k to burn can buy a 600cc race rep off the showroom floor that isn't too far removed from what is being raced competitively. For a few bucks more you can pick up a liter bike that is insanely fast.... on a bang for a buck basis a new Kawasaki ZX-10R or BMW S1000RR offers an insane level of performance for what it costs. you cannot simply purchase a car off of the showroom floor (with some exceptions) that is pretty much ready to run in semi-pro and professional racing series for any reasonable amount of money.

I got more than a few surprises after I rode my Hyabusa out of the showroom. It only took a thought to bring the front wheel off the ground. A short twist and you were over a hundred in second gear. I really miss that bike.

But as has been said, 600cc or better, you're going to have to have a vette or better to match the accleration but a bike will almost always lose in a curve unless you are really agressive in the lean and not many are. You can always tell by looking at the sidewall on the bike.

Seeing as this is a pissing contest, let's do it properly. Straight line only means nothing.

Silverstone, UK: 5.891km
Formula 1 record: 1:30.874 (Fernando Alonso, 2010)
MotoGP record: 2.03.526 (Jorge Lorenzo, 2010)

Sepang circuit, Malaysia: 5.543km
Formula 1 record: 1:34.223 (JP Montoya, 2004)
MotoGP record: 2.02.108 (Casey Stoner, 2007)
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Let's see, hmmm, Monza:

Car: 1:20.089 (Brazil Rubens Barrichello, Ferrari, F2004)
Car: 1m19.525s (Columbia, Juan Pablo Montoya, Williams, FW26)
Motorbike: 1:41.745 (Italy, Max Biaggi, Aprilia, RSV4 1000F)

The fastest cars appear have the edge over the fastest bikes in normal situations. Monza should be a circuit that doesn't penalise the handling ability of a motorbike as much as some others. Juan Montoya's average speed on that sensational lap was barely a whisker below 163mph.

Unless you choose a track that is too narrow to fit a car, the bike will mostly be slower since it has narrow tyres, plus the car has wide tyres and large downforce, plus the car has very high top speeds well in excess of 370km/h at circuits like Monza, while Biaggi was clocked at 205mph.

Plenty of fairly inexpensive cars have 400-500+ horsepower and can theoretically hit 180 mph. Mustang GT... turbo BMWs... Infiniti M56.. Cadillac CTS-V... Mercedes C63.. these are regular production cars, not exotics. Big power is very easy to build and sell today, it seems.

That is true, but a lot of those cars do not have AWD. AWD can make a car absolutely fly. Even with less HP.

I believe a Chrysler 300C SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8 could be bought in AWD, and they come with big horse power at a lower price.

Inexpensive is relative I guess, and those cars are heavy as tanks, not good for the twisty parts. Light is right ! If an Atom you can't get, then a Lotus or Caterham or Donkervoort, or to go in the exotic but still "affordable", Radical SR8 ! It has the record for a road legal car at the Nurburgring, far ahead of the Porsches and Nissans that alternatively claim to have it.

Further none of the hi-po luxo-barges are street legal race cars. To take a Cadillac CTS-V for example and make it ready to race in ALMS for example would take a pretty sizeable investment, for example. Whereas a 600cc supersport motorcycles (Kawasaki ZX-6R, Suzuki GSX-R-600, etc for the non-motorcycle savvy) are more or less the same as their 600cc racing bike counterparts -- except they have headlights and such.

comparing anything to F1 is exactly a fair comparo. While I can buy the argument that both F1 and MotoGP are the pinnacles of four and two-wheeled racing you can't buy something that is even remotely equivalent to an F1 car off of the showroom floor, where you can do so with a bike. I think a fairer comparo would be with ALMS or one of the touring car series (BTCC). But even then the four wheeled car would still be quicker.

Generally, I would think that the tighter tracks with more curves will favor AWD since they can put the power down more quickly and effectively on the corner exits. Speed tracks like Monza with long straights should even things out considerably, or even give a slight advantage to rear wheel drive due to lighter weight. Front wheel drive sucks all the time and has no business on the track.

Definitely correct, but that is because of safety regulations mostly. Some semi-race-ready cars include:

Subaru STi
Mitsubishi Evo
Lotus Exige

Porsche 911 GT3 RS
Mustang Boss 302
Corvette Z06
Nissan GTR Track
BMW M3 lightweight

Those are your usual suspects. The sales pitch indicates these cares are designed for track abuse.

Then there are track-only specials like Caterhams, Moslers and whatever.

I think Monza has the option to add in a chicane just after that long sweeping right turn back to the front straight. If one course has it and the other doesn't, that might be the difference.

Bugatti Veyron SS
Ariel Atom V8

The Atom V8 beats a BMW S1000RR around a track in this video from Top Gear. Similar power-to-weight ratio but the Atom could brake later into the corners due to superior traction and take the corners faster overall due to having 4 wheels.
