A 3-foot giant Gambian Rat has been killed with a pitchfork in the projects in NYC - same place Jay-Z grew up in:

Our rats are as big as cats...

I Google Image searched the Gambian pouched rat... it's kind of cute! It looks like a small marsupial almost. Though if I wasn't expecting one in my home, that would freak me out quite a bit!

At 3 feet long, I would be pretty freaked out too! Too many rats in NYC...

That was my first thought too! And typical of media reporting, it's not a pitchfork (3 tines), it's a manure fork (5 or more tines).

I've seen a rat that big here in Birmingham. I was stopped at a red light on 3rd Avenue South at 14th Street late one night and it crawled out of a storm drain beside my car and sat there cleaning it's whiskers, pretty as you please. It's fur was a dirty blond color, not grey or dark brown like normal rats, so it might also have been a Gambian Pouched Rat formerly kept as a pet. Former pet or not, it was freakin' huge and I didn't take my eyes off it until the light changed.

Someone who isn't fond of giant rats.

Update: There are a few more of these denizens underground. We are expecting Hurricane Irene on Sunday, and in the worst case scenario, the subways will be flooded and the rat population (millions?) will come out and play. The horror.

What a pity it gets so cold in NYC in the winter; if it was a little warmer, they could "transfer" some of those excess Burmese pythons they are so worried about down in Florida, up to NYC; believe me, the rat population would plunge !

But what would that do to the snake population?    - I'd rather have rats!

Who the heck doesn't?

Apparently the Terminator was a city worker, presumably the pitchfork (as above, actually a manure fork) was city issued.

From the pic that I saw, it didn't look that big. The worker was holding the rat really close to the camera lens. It was probably a wide angle lens, also. Hunters and fishermen do it all the time to make their catch look bigger.

But that's counting the tail, which makes the rat about 18 inches long sans tail. Normal, everyday rats can easily be 12 inches long sans tail, so 18 inches is big but not "The Food Of The Gods" big.

Thanks for the very graphic explanation  Wow!

It is a tradition in wild game hunting to exaggerate a bit...

My thought exactly! Is there a hay field somewhere I don't know about? Maybe the lower east side. Or Staten Island. But, Manhattan???

C'mon... There are horses in Manhattan... Police horses, horses for pleasure riding, horses to pull carriages... And wherever there are horses, pitchforks (actually manure forks in this case) are sure to follow...

What shocks me is the sentence "with his hideous hanging tail" in the article.
Since when is a hanging tail hideous ?

That rat itself is a delicacy, actually considered a national dish in Ivory Coast. Tastes quite similar to rabbit.
