The Lazy Random Friday Thread

Hello, everyone.

I decided to start the "Lazy Random Friday thread", a mishmash thread where, as long as it doesn't violate the A.net Terms of Service, it's free game.

To start: it's an absolutely beautiful Friday afternoon here in YYC: it's about 21C, there's some clouds, there's some sun, and Calgary plays Montreal tomorrow at McMahon. Go Stampeders.

The job search is going okay, but I'm still not catching any bites. At least I still have enough money to pay for rent, food and cigarettes.

In between Hurricane Irene, the east coast earthquake and NDP Leader Jack Layton dying (condolences to his family and NDP supporters), I stopped watching TV sans for The Price is Right at 11AM on KREM2 CBS Spokane, or the odd movie featuring Burt Lancaster, Jimmy Stewart or many of the "Golden Oldies" on TCM.

If you're in school or college, enjoy the last bit of summer (unless class has already started for you), and please remember: school toilets and cherry bombs do NOT mix. One of my friends learned that the hard way.

As it sits right now, I'm smoking a cigarette on the balcony, watching random YouTube videos while waiting for my laundry to finish. I will be glad when the next-door neighbor's kids go back to school in a couple weeks; it means no more screaming, water-gun fights or charging up and down the hallway at 7AM on Monday mornings when I'm trying to sleep.

It's hard to believe it's already August 26th, but then again, it's hard to believe a lot of things.

Anyways, please contribute to the thread by being as random as possible, as long as it doesn't break the rules and won't get either you or I banned.

Thank you,
Nik

Today is my school's big rivalry football game, which we lost every year until 2009 (from 2000 at least; we'd won it before that) and are on track to probably lose again. Just sayin'.

And now a few songs stuck in my head (not complaing, mind you):

Here is a random question:
What if you walk into a store, steal $20 worth of products. Then come back, return the products and the store gives you a refund. Then you purchase products at that store for $20. Does the store make a loss or a profit from this? My friend and I are questioning this and can't come to a conclusion. Note that I would never actually try this since it is stealing.

Oh and the weather in Minnesota is nice like always.

I think a loss:

$20 worth of stock is taken then
$20 is loss again due to refund so = -$40
you then spend $20

Total loss = $20

FYI pretty silly for the shop to give refund without reciept! Dont know what laws apply in US of A, but in AU shops dont have to refund without proof of purchase to prevent this exact situation!

It doesn't matter - whatever you stole from the store is the loss they take. The product that they have (either by paying you for it back [returning it] or just selling it to anybody else) is the same profit regardless. The only loss they incur is what you stole.

Doesn't matter if you spend $40 - somebody else would have spent the other $20 if you hadn't, so you aren't 'helping' them out any more.

Now, of course there are a finite number of people and a finite number of products to sell, so in reality saying "somebody else would have spent the other $20" isn't necessarily the case. However, due to the number of customers a store typically has, we can treat it to be an absolute that another person would buy the product.

In short - if you steal $20 of goods, it does not matter how much you buy back from the, return to them, or whatever - they are still out that $20 when all is said and done after the returns and purchases.

It's a loss like ALTF4 and joffie said. You steal the goods, meaning a $20 "shrink" (loss) in product, you return 'em, and they give you $20...if they don't catch and charge you for theft.

Speaking of theft, I watched Heat with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro today. I can't believe they're both either approaching or in their 70s. Then again, I find it hard to believe Bob Barker is in his mid-80s and isn't pushing daisies yet.

Now, your opinion: do you think Drew Carey is suited for The Price is Right? I think he is. He brings life to the show. That's just me.

Well, fall's here in Calgary; it was raining for a bit, and the wind's picked up. It was kind of breezy walking from the apartment to the convenience store to pick up cigarettes, and the wind-tunnel effect of the skyscrapers here don't help either.

It's Labour Day Weekend (yes, I spell it L-A-B-O-U-R like a good Canadian), and I counted sixty cars with either boats or campers leaving the city for their obligatory 'last weekend of summer' run to the campsites, even if the trees are sneezing and it's raining cats and dogs.

Speaking of cats, the Demonic Furball from Hell ruined a $200 set of curtains with her claws. Then again, they were an ugly set of curtains, and I'm actually kind of glad the cat ruined them.

Anyway, keep the random thoughts a-coming. You guys are doing a good job.

I agree with Cragganmore 100% but for Irish, if you try Powers, you won't drink Jamison or Bushmill's again...unless someone buys it for you, then it would be rude to refuse...

Here is how it works with regards to stealings in retail stores. When you steal something, and are not caught, the shop will not find out until next inventory count. Store keeps track of the number of items delivered (or supposedly delivered, sometimes you do not accept into your database items as you actually get them, but as they are on the shipping list, which may be wrong) and number of items sold.

So for example you find you have 15 pieces of item A in the store, on last inventory check you had 14, 10 have been delivered and 8 have been sold. This means that you are missing one item. Obviously, you try to find the missing item, if you still count 14 in stock, you correct the database and register a stock decrease as "unknown loss". Unknown loss means you have no way of finding out what happened. It could have been stolen, sold as a different item (typically, people will try and put luxury personal hygiene items such as parfumes or toothpaste in boxes from cheap, often store-brand products), never delivered, destroyed in-store beyound possible recognition (for example, bottle shattered to pieces by machinery), and anything else you can think of. In contrast, typical known loss is grocery gone bad/past the date.

The important part here is, that this loss registers at purchase price, which can be higher or lower than retail price.
Lets say the purchase price of your 20 bucks worth of stuff is 18 bucks.

So you come back and ask for a refund. Without a valid bill, you should not get one, but this can be circumvented.
Store now accepts your items into stock as if it was delivered by the distributor. If it can still be sold (for example, undamaged, untampered with clothing), it will be put on shelves. So now you go and buy - same stuff? Or some other stuff?

Either way, the store finds out on next inventory count they are missing some items in total purchase value of 18, resale value of 20. Because even though they have 16 items, your refund bumped up "items delivered" count to 11, and 8 have still been sold, plus the 14 they had, should have had 17. If you bought the same thing you returned, they have 15 in stock, 11 delivered, 9 sold, 14 left-over, 1 missing.

Now, theoretically other item you bought for 20 bucks had a purchase price of 1, they are in net revenue of 1 dollar, but still, if you never stole item A, just bought item B, it would be 19 dollars.

It is worth noting that income/expenditure/profit/loss are not accounted on per-item basis, rather you take your monetary income from selling stuff, set it against your expenses, such as staff, maintenance, inventory change and so on, and you find out your revenue.

Also it is worth noting that I probably mixed up my accounting termitus technicus.

My Blackberry died on me this morning. It wouldn't turn on, so instead of spending an hour and a half on hold with Telus Tech Support, I decided to trundle down to the nearest Telus store. After arriving at the Telus store and explaining my problem a salesperson, he told me couldn't honor my warranty because I had an 'obsolete' model.

I have a Blackberry Curve 9330, ironically released one year ago today by RIM, and I received this phone after my 8330 went Tango Uniform last November. Until November 22, 2011, my warranty is still valid on the 9330 AND I have a two-year extended service warranty for battery replacement and such. Worth the extra $115. I guessed (correctly) that he was new and didn't know that much about how warranties worked.

After spending about twenty minutes talking (more like politely arguing) with the salesperson, the supervisor came over and asked what the issue was. I showed her my warranty, my phone and explained the problem. The supervisor looked at my phone, looked at my warranty, looked at the phone again, looked at the salesperson, looked at me, looked at the phone and warranty...then disappeared with my phone.

Ten minutes later, she (the supervisor) came out and explained I needed a new battery, and that because I had my warranty on me, she replaced my battery for free. She also said that if I had *any* technical problems at all with my phone (say, the device dies for no reason), to come and talk to her PERSONALLY. She handed me back my phone, my warranty and her business card. I said thanks to the supervisor and salesperson (who is now beet-red with embarrassment) and was on my merry way back to the apartment.

Quoting Fabo (Reply 41):

It might be me, but I think you're looking way too deeply into it...

The store's cashflow is basically 0 (they give you $20 then you give it back).
The store's inventory is down one product (the one you bought with the 20 bucks).

Hence, the store has lost the purchase value of that product (which is obviously less than $20). It will be written down as unknown loss as you said.

On the bigger picture, of course, unknown loss is computed in accounting and the store offsets that passive by basically increasing margins.

In short, when you steal a product in a store, the store will slightly increase the price of every product to make up for it. In the end, every consumer loses out, even the thief as he is very often also a customer...

Of course, theft is only a part of unknown loss as you said.
