Vegas Meet 2012, Anyone?

Thu Nov 17, 2011 11:30 am

Hey guys,

Just throwing a bone out to see if anyone would be interested in doing a Vegas meet next year. Usually, it was done in May, but if that doesn't work for some, then I'm sure we can come up with an alternative date.

I can almost always find cheap airfare out there, and I get comps for rooms like crazy from the Riviera so as long as my bank account is somewhat replinished from my trip to Israel, I should be okay to do a LAS meet in late spring/summer.

I'm already booked for a trip out there in a few weeks, so a Spring trip to Vegas is up in the air for me as I'm considering actually going someone besides Vegas for a trip sometime between April-June. I probably won't start putting such plans into motion until sometime after the first of the year. As it currently stands, I'm likely out of such a venture for the time being.

Actually it was held in late March, so unless there was some super secret LAS Meet in May that I never knew about......

It was rather nice for the Meets in 2006 and 2007. Now Las Vegas in March can be a mixed bag, as in 2009 I went the last weekend in March and most of that weekend was nice and warm but Sunday night it got chilly and the only jacket I had was my sport coat and that was too thin to be of much use. I was out there back in early March this year and the weather was nice the entire time. I went the first weekend in May back in 2008 and the day I arrived, it was in the low 70s but it was very breezy and the winds made it feel even colder. The last two years I've been out there in early to mid June and a heatwave always seems to break right before I got there. The hottest its' been when I've been out there was 96-98F which was not bad at all.

In early April this year, I managed to make a 2 hour flight when we got the most perfect northwesterly wind at the club. I was between 9,000 and 13,000 the entire time while surfing mountain wave (and, if I had oxygen, I could've done 17,999 feet.) It's bound to happen again next year, so who knows!

So are we looking into a specific time frame here ?
I still have to spend some funds on WN before they expire ...

I was thinking Spring, or may be fall. Summer will be too hot for most visitors, and Winter is rainy; not always good for spotting.

But it's a dry heat.....

I know folks that prefer going out there when it is hot because it's not as crowded. I think I could handle triple-digit heat, but anything over 105F may be a bit too much to deal with. I remember when I went out there last June, it had been 105F+ for about a week prior to my trip and early forecasts indicated that it would be that hot when I was out there. I lucked out and the heatwave broke the day I got there and the hottest it got was 96F. My friends had spent several days in Laughlin prior to my arrival in Vegas and they were out in 110F+ temps playing golf......
