Baroque Has Passed Away.

Very sad to hear this. Not sure what I can say that hasn't been said already... while we disagreed on many things, he was always civil and knowledgeable - I learned a lot from him.

By the way, I double-checked and confirmed it - my last PM on this site was in September, and with him (I don't use the PM function a lot). Talking about his recent visit to Portugal and discussing geology - how fitting.

Alan and I had many discussions through the years. He was one of the people who made this site worthwhile. I'll miss talking to him about our many shared and diverse interests. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Rest well, Alan, and take comfort in knowing how many people's lives you touched.

Wow...

A.net just lost an deep thinking intellectual heavyweight.

I will miss this guy, one of the few who really understood me head to toe!

I had to go take a look at his last PM to me to remind me of his razor sharp mind and craftsmanship with words...a huge loss
on this plane indeed.

Alan my good man, I know in the alternative and/or parallel universe where one of Earth's identical or near twins exist, you're still posting and bringing the fire.. keep up the encouragement and support, it is always appreciated and whoever is on the receiving end, is walking away a bit wiser than he was before.

You're one of the lights that made this world a much brighter and happier place.

This is a (very sad) bolt out of the blue. His posts were often cryptic and had to be read carefully (or twice) to catch the subtelties. A gentleman in the true sense of the word, and he will be sadly missed on A.net.

What a punch in the gut to come home to from a hard days teaching!
While Alan had many, many interests he was a "teacher" through and through! We had many IM threads about students and the things they do to you, believe me he had many stories. (Some of which would have had his Dean/Vice-Chancellor being very uncomfortable.)

You will be very sadly missed mate!

this is a huge shock, I remember reading something from him not to long ago and thinking to myself that's Allan. I always looked forward to the PM's that came my way on a variety of topics. He will be sadly missed, RIP old chap, and happy flying!

RIP Alan - He lived in my home town and knew some family friends. As it turns out, I may have met him many years ago, as he was a Geology professor at my alma mater whilst I was studying physical geography.

Maybe it was the Wollongong thing ( a good working class mining/steel town years ago), but it was always great to be in a non-av with Alan cutting through the conservative BS that can go on here at times. I'll really, really miss him on a.net....

I've never had the honour of meeting him, but having read many of his posts, one gets the impression that he is an intelligent, quick-witted fellow. I've enjoyed my online debates with him. He was a great man and will be sadly missed by the A.net community. Rest In peace, Baroque.

I always enjoyed my discussions with Alan, he knew how to make a point and listen to others. We were supposed to have a drink when I came to that part of the world, and I'm sad to see that's not going to happen.

He brought strong opinions with which I often disagreed, but he also brought civil and respectful discourse to a forum often lacking.

He popped up in the South Africa vs Australia cricket thread ( SAvAus In Cape Town - Cricket? (by Baroque Nov 10 2011 in Non Aviation) = after the first test, but I've only just noticed he failed to show up after the thriller that was the second test. A shame he didn't get that one to bow out on.

Thank you for posting this imiakhtar so as to let the the A.net community know we have lost a forum giant and post our condolences. I will miss him enormously on these boards for his witty, courteous and intelligent posts and am greatly saddened that we will never again see Baroque post on these boards.

I know he was up there in age and he did pass along some great knowledge from the WWII era and also his posts in the oil field where always a good read. While I did disagree with him on many a subject in the fields of history and geology he always dropped some good knowledge on us and made me a smarter person from reading those posts. I imagine he would of been a good man to sit and have a pint with...Good bye Alan. RIP....

I am in a slight daze of shock. I am saddened by his passing.

It's funny how the virtual world can suddenly stand up and knock the wind out of your sails. We never met but I had a very strong affinity for his outlook on life. I quite enjoyed his repartees in politics.

His temperament and his worldly view will be sorely missed on a.net. It won't be the same without him.

Very sad, had a lot of respect for Baroque. Even working around tons of oil & gas people, I often found Alan to have particularly insightful and unique comments about energy issues. Just seemed like a very honest, polite man. My sincere condolences to his family.

Baroque will be missed greatly, non-aviation forum is not going to be the same without him, I was hoping this topic poster was misinformed and Baroque would have replied having a good laugh at it, but no.

Luckily I had an instant message exchange with him a month ago, normally I dont message people seeking clarifications regarding some things discussed here so it was a first for me, and I'm so glad I chose to message Baroque, he was wonderful to talk to, welcoming and polite never hesitating in answering anything, with long replies not just a few lines, even personal questions which he could have just avoided off, truly a gem of a person.

May he rest in peace.
