No more news of the cause yet but sad news all the same.

Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, has died. She was 48.
Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.

And yet another one kicks the bucket...shame that good artists are dying so young. Though it is true that the latter part of her career was in the dumps, the beginning was very successful and for that she will be remembered.

Indeed she was photographed recently and looked desperate . I will not post the pics I prefer to remember her the way she was. Life took its toll and she didnt have an easy life .

Statistically speaking, most people who kick an addiction end up relapsing at some point.

Never was THAT crazy about her voice. Granted it was a great voice, but I usually can't get into people who don't write most of their songs.

Other than that, I'm guessing that people just aren't that surprised. I know I'm not.

True. Even if she hadn't relapsed, she consumed a lot of coccaine for what seems to be about a dozen years. That does a lot of damage to the heart. Those three packs of cigarettes she smoked daily didn't help either. My guess is she probably had a heart attack. It's just such a shame she did that to herself, such an amazing voice, at least pre-2000. Her last album was just bad.

Sad news. She was clearly troubled over the last several years, but what talent she once possessed. Sadly, her troubles seem to have started when she married Bobby Brown.

I am very sad to hear of her death at such a young age, although I have to admit that I was surprised to hear that she had been still alive. I have to be honest, if anyone had asked me I would have probably guessed that she had died a few years ago. Anyway, she is now beyond the reach of whatever personal demons were dragging her down. Fame extracts a terrible price from some people.

Yes, she had talent and a great voice. But she did this to herself. That limits our sympathy, since basically she was already "lost" a decade ago.

Probably by late Sunday morning or noon in LA, we should have some preliminary idea of what caused her death. I suspect that she will face a full atopacy, but it will take weeks for the drug/blood test to come through. Right now, everyting is speculative, many shocked by these events, and the tragedy her live had had become.

Very sad indeed. On CNN (Airport Network) that's all you hear. I never cared for the material she sang. But she had a golden voice. Had she been around in the 60's and 70's (10 to 20 years older) her music would have then been truly legendary. Whitney would have hit it out of the park if she had the opportunity to perform a John Barry song as a James Bond movie theme. Dionne Warwick was her aunt. Dionne had some kick ass music that still stands the test of time! To the media: Please don't bombard us with "I'm Every Woman." That was Lady Oprah's theme song for too many seasons of her gab fest.

As was, for example, the jazz singer Billy Holiday aka "The Lady", who also died in her 40s due to the consequences of drug abuse. Another one was Janice joplin.
I could name a lot of musicians with talent and good voices or instrument skills, who died very youg due to excessive use of drugs, all the way back from the 1920s.

While I was never a great fan of her music, what hits me is that she is in my own age range and I don´t really feel old.

You're not. You're just about as old as I am.

But it wasn't age that caught up with her (we might literally still just be "middle-aged" just by that if we're lucky). Many artists have succumbed to drugs at an even younger age.

She had an incredible, expressive voice; Her descent into personal and drug problems was really heartbreaking.

I'm really hurting over this news.

People are so ready to judge, but have you ever been the victim? Imagine the torment this woman must have been going through for too many years. That's kind of too much. It is. Just thinking about that is heartbreaking to me.

Think about her daughter. She's like college aged right? Younger than I am, I know. I can't even imagine losing my mother, and I'm under 30. That is incredibly sad to me.

It's not like anyone could've prevented this. But it's all very sad and evil/insensitive comments are unwarranted and unnecessary.

No great loss, her career effectively ended when she hooked up with Bobby Brown, she hasn't done anything for a very very long time, sure some die hard fans will miss her, her family will be upset, but at the end of the day this is just another dead junkie.

Not evil just realistic, what about all the other junkies who o'd last night are their lives being plastered all over the news, are you sad about them? Really she's been a waste of space for a long time, this was pretty much her inevitable end.

I'm sad about ANYONE who has a problem and cannot live through it. And I will tell anyone that to their face. Just because someone is a junkie doesn't make them a dastardly person. No, she wasn't. No "dead junkie" is just that – even every drug victim had a life story, a family and was another human being worthy of at least fundamental human respect, however sad the end may turn out to be.

Houston's music has touched many peoples' lives, if just tangentially, so hearing of her death affects many people at least a little bit. I've never been a big fan, but even I was impressed by some of her early work and the sadness of her later life still affects how I feel when I come across her music (which will certainly happen a bit more frequently now).

Drug addiction is a horrendous disease, and even if most people should easily be able to avoid it, reality is not always that kind to all of us. I hope that you have circumstances and above all people who are a little kinder to yourself than your own harsh comment suggests.

I understand where people are coming from when they say they don't feel sorry for her. She did it to herself. I mean, she didn't start using cocaine when nobody knew anything about it. She started using it in the 90's when it was well known that cocaine was a nasty nasty drug. Stevie Nicks, Liza Minelli, Rick James are just off the top of my head. So, in that respect, it is hard to feel sorry for somebody who makes the choice to poison themselves that way. Is it sad that a talent is gone and a human life is over? Of course it is. But a house just didn't fall on her. She let this happen to her. The only part, to me, that is worse is the fact that for ten years we sat there on our sofas and watched her self-destruct...and turned it into a form of entertainment. How many of us giggle when somebody says "CRACK IS WHACK!!! Where's the receipt?!"

Even though I'm more a hard rocker,every time I would her voice on the radio,she got my attention.I can appreciate that tremendous voice.i also saw her in "The Bodyguard" with Costner.i knew she was having a lot problems.Beautiful lady,beautiful voice.

I think this song from her first album was her best.

She knew what she was getting into and she still did it. Bobby Brown, at the very least, keeps his addiction under control (for lack of a better term).

It pained me to see her trying to sing anything on live TV but just giving up. It really is too bad. She was very talented.

I think she has fallen into what a lot of superstars do after they lose it. Although I think she had problems before but look at Demi Moore also both women seem to have problems dealing with not being at the top anymore. It is a shame I don't want to speculate but I think when the coroner comes out with the cause of death it wont be a surprise. But that said she had an awesome talent I loved her music. She was my age too young to go. Funny to see Rev Al come out as I remember it Whitney took a lot of heat from the black community with her music being more pop oriented.

At the end of the day, unless you're forcibly made to imbibe a drug, an addiction is your own fault.

It's one of those things you get drilled into you in recovery. Blaming others doesn't get you anywhere.

I didn't see that interview, but what he says may not be untrue. You can have the greatest support network in the world; it just doesn't have any effect if you don't take advantage of it.

Very true . You can have tons of family and friends supporting you and it doesn't make a difference to an addiction. Just like when people take their own lives a lot come from loving families who feel powerless.

Beautiful woman. Amazing voice. And a sad situation. Too bad she couldn't pull it together. I was listening to some of her older songs this morning and they made me feel all nostalgic about my childhood. I know she was most known for her power ballads, but I always liked her fun pop and dance songs the best: "How Will I Know", "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", "It's Not Right", "Queen of the Night" etc. And, of course, "The Star Spangled Banner" at the SuperBowl in 1991 always induces goosebumps. Sad.

Really guys? What has happened to men lately? How can you speak publicly that way about a WOMAN who's just died?

I understand your point that, at the end of the day, we all suffer the consequences of our choices. (A valid point, by the way.) But, damn. There's this new snarky "cattiness" in men that is so off-putitng and totally anti-masculine. I'm just trying to picture my father or grandfather saying something like that about a woman and I just can't get a visual.

I heard on the news last night that the autopsy was done but it could take up to two months to get the toxicology report.

Why would it take two months for a toxicology report.
