The Ads You Get

Thu Feb 16, 2012 6:27 am

We did one of these a while back, but it's worth revisiting.

Lately, I'm seeing ads for Hyundai, Rick Santorum (really?) and the 9/11 memorial on A.net?

The strangest ad to plague my A.net was one for Proactiv. I haven't had a pimple in years...

Currently, on the iPad, I am seeing ads for Toyota, AdCouncil, and my local cable company. However, I have the desktop setup to where I get absolutely no ads... Firefox, AdBlock Plus, and NoScript.

right now i'm getting bet365bingo, smiletrain (which is a rather disturbing ad featuring a child with a bleeding nose), and American Express platinum.

The weirdest advert I had was a couple of days ago - it was for the European Union!

Right now I'm getting British Airways (in Italian), Air Transat (in Italian), one from the Arthritis Foundation telling me that moving is the best medicine (thanks for that, can't do anything because of my broken leg!) and another one telling me to send a Safe Space Kit to a school of my choice (what the hell is that? The link is not even working).

I have not seen any ads for, say, hardware stores.

I wonder if I type True Value (or, just off of the inclusion of the phrase "hardware stores" in my post), I'll start seeing something related to that...

Opened the thread in internet explorer to see ads. Got American ads, while I'm in France without a proxy, go figure.

- dial 911 at the first sign of a stroke ! (I doubt that will work)
- if your home was built before 1978, visit leadfreekids.org
- an image of a contunited 777 with the caption : This is how the United/Continental merger will look. (is that even good English ?). Collect the history before it's all gone! AirlineMuseum.com has over 80 Continental and United models. These airlines will never look the same - Own a piece of history.

That one must have been tailor made for airliners.net

One I kept getting recently was "Fly Delta to Huntsville."

I live in Seattle now. Why would I want to do that? Also, how do they know Huntsville is my hometown? I haven't visited delta.com in months. And that was for flights from MNL-SEA. Hmmm...

It's the cookies buddies.
The Ad company pulls all the little cookies on your browser, and then tailor's your experience based on that.

Probably default for empty. Make IE accept cookies, and surf around some of your favorite sites and come back.

I currently get Adobe ads, since I was investingating a purchase for work.

Before I log in, I see PSA about teenagers dropping out of high school and ads for schools "willing" to help me get my GED. I know all about advertising cookies but I am baffled as to how these came about. I have no kids, teenager or otherwise, have no need for a GED and certainly haven't researched the topic online.

After I log in, no ads...

Plan Canada (asking me to sponsor a girl in a developing country)
TRX Fitness (Free shipping to Canada!)
Air Canada, fares round trip from Halifax to Sao Paulo, Lima, & Santiago
Dell IT Planning

I've had that happen a lot. In December I remember some times when all of the ads on a page would come up from my employer.

At the moment I'm getting

- Jetstar "Japan 2 for 1 sale"
- Flight Centre "Experience India"
- Groupon
- Another Groupon
- CONGRATULATIONS! You are today's iPhone 4S winner! Click "Yes" button below to clam before time runs out.

Most bizarre one I've had was a public service announcement "Dial 911 at the first sign of a stroke" obviously not aimed at me.

After refreshing a few times I get Weight Watchers, Medibank Private Pet Insurance and Bankwest

None at all. Chrome with adblock (and before that, Firefox with adblock until it ran my laptop into the ground). Haven't seen an ad in years.

Question though - on some "questionable" websites (And no, not porn ), when you click certain things, why does it not block ads that come up? They're obviously click based ads but they irritate the crap out me.

On this page right now, I'm getting an ad from the cable TV company Comcast, an ad for TiVo's latest DVR (TiVo Elite), a T-Mobile USA ad, and a political for the Rick Santorum Presidential campaign.

I think the ad placement is dependent on what country you're logged in from.
