What Unites Us Americans?

Sun Feb 26, 2012 1:05 am

We Americans fight and argue about a lot of things in our country, things like global warming, media bias, separation of church and state, recreational drug use, job export, foreign intervention, religion/secularization, sex ed/abstinence, evolution/creation, pornography, public education, family values, spankings, oil/green energy, Law and Order, gun rights, Dream Act, science, history, Israel, Islam, Western Europe, gay rights, healthcare reform, government size, minimum wage, unionization, right-to-work, immigration reform/border control, abortion, contraception, stem-cell research, moral absolutism/relativism, multiculturalism, and defining political correctness.

With all the things that we argue about, what can still bring us together?

We support our troops and that they are cared for.

We support our first responders.

Checks and balances in government.

A media.

What other things?

Nothing short of another major catastrophe (9/11, katrina, etc etc). And as always, the second the dust settles, everybody starts blaming everybody else for one thing or another, and the damned media just feeds on this crap and then throws more gas into the flames. It's a never ending cycle.

I've lost faith in this country, hell, lets make that humanity.

Queue the I'm an "ungrateful anti-american piece of steaming shit that should be shot" flame posts in 3...2..1...

Like who?

I think a publicly employed person who works 12 + hours a day deserves a wage that feed his family.

I can tell already where this thing is going, I am still optimistic.

Intelligent politicians like Eichman or Beria? They didn't have these problems. They got a lot done too.

I ceased identifying myself by nationality years ago, & haven't looked back since. I pay my taxes, that ought to be good enough for america. I certainly don't owe it any loyalty.

Really, like anyone else (those of us being honest with ourselves at any rate), I care about who I care about and leave it at that. The rest is overkill.

Considering this current administration an lets face it, the one prior as well...Hope, I believe is what unites us. In our Democratic, Free society the US has a proven track record that our system has worked, and has been greatly admired by the global community. HOWEVER...all that is good in this country I believe is its people but 300,000,000 individuals must be governed and to some degree,...controlled by laws. Practical and sensible laws, ones that most agree with, some may not but some level of control is required...otherwise chaos. Having said that, this "control" allegedly is effected by our elected officials, officials we like, trust and elect. This I believe to be the current problem though...a new paradigm has placed itself in a transparent attempt to take care of our needs. Most Americans see the crap going on, the "self entitlement, narcissism and arrogance of current/ recent administrations that act out on their own self interest, not the interest of the people that put them there. Mayor Bloomberg for instance...He self appointed himself a third term as NY City mayor when the position offered none. We know that he would sell his own grandmother for a wooden nickel. Conversely...Mayor Giuliani was a man for the people, yes he lived an "entitled life" but he made sure the people benefited first and his mission was to make a difference. The mayor example is just a microcosm of the mindset I believe now is the dominant theme in the US government. Nancy Pelosi, a more smug person I've never seen the likes of. Currently we have NO real leaders. So I do believe it is HOPE that unites us. All individuals I have spoken to feel the same. 100% are well aware of the nonsense that pervades this country at this time and are tired of being shoved around like hockey pucks. Answer IMHO=Hope!

What unites us Americans?

We LOVE to argue amongst one another. Usually over cold beer during the game. (I know, I know your not supposed to argue these things at a bar but we all do anyway).

We will always have discord, usually politically. Out political system will never be "let's-hold-hands-and-sing-together-in-harmony-i-love-you-man"perfect (and I am thankful for that).

IMHO (and what keeps me united to my country) is that yes, I don't agree with everythining out there and yes, I do believe we have a lot of problems to face. I may not agree with our government or politicians (most of the time, damn libertarian in me lol) but I still speak out and I still state my opinion and a good majority of us do speak out. Will it get us change? Maybe, maybe not but being vocal and stating you opinions do unite us as Americans.

How about some Americans that earn 7 figures and would gladly throw a veteran with PTS on the street so they could keep their tax cut.

Law and Order

Nah I would pick The Brady Bunch or the Three Stooges.
Just about every American can understand a reference to these two shows.

That is my opinion as well. I'm not living currently in the US but did for a while. Looking at it from the southern hemisphere you are always having to stay clear of all the crappy anti-US propaganda (to criticize objectively is OK in my book, but many don't care at all about objectivity and will use each and every opportunity make the US the great evil of our times). In some circles trying to offer a balanced perspective seems useless as people have already made up their minds and the objective of a discussion is never to listen but to impose their own views.

On my part, with my particular inside/outside perspective, I usually highlight the fact that in the US people are what they seem to be: what you see is what you get. I don't know if many will understand this, but in many countries (mine included) people tend to be a lot more hypocrite. They will pay lip service to being fair, balanced, objective and reasonable. But their actions and opinions reflect deep prejudices. When I meet someone in the US, I can like or not like whom I meet, but they'll show themselves as they are (for the most part). Being authentic even in disagreement is a big unifying factor IMHO.

You're never supposed to talk about about religion and/or politics but that's what Americans love to argue about and of course the Red Sox/Yankees.

In a word...Freedom...the possibilty to be all you can be (no not in the Army).

A bizarre religion, steeped in denial that holds holy the notion that if only ONE instead of THE OTHER political party was in power all would be solved, justice and prosperity would reign. And we belive this despite daily proof to the contrary.

As we have since 1776. I am in no way concerned with the discord in our society. It is one of fascinating traits of our nation that we can be so heavily divided and yet vastly outperform the rest of the world in so many ways.

What does concern me is that we have seen a growing disregard for our civic processes that have served us so well for more than 200 years. The result is that we are kicking the can more often than actually solving problems for good.

Oh yeah because that happens all the time  .
I think we all are united when complaining about our government and its downfalls. Yet we do nothing to fix it. Such a shame.
