MegaBus: Anyone Tried Them?

Sun Feb 26, 2012 10:21 pm

http://us.megabus.com/

A friend told me about this bus company. Apparently you can get $1 fares if you book early enough. As much as I loathe riding a bus for 8-9 hours with the sort of people $1 fares might attract, I'm tempted to try them. Can't beat travelling 500 miles for $2.50 roundtrip. Anyone given them a try?

Not yet, but it's on my "to do" list ! I sometimes see these things when I go to Indianapoils; sometime when I have "time on my hands" I may take a trip up to Chicago and right back, just to check it out.

My fiancee' rides the Amtrak to Chicago all the time; I ran her up to Crawfordsville Friday morning, sge arrives Union Station in about 4 1/4 hrs, grabs the Metra out to Lisle, Enterprise meets her at the Metra station with her car, Monday she does it all in reverse order, and I pick her up at !!:30 PM tomorrow night; $34 RT for the Amtrak; can't beat it with a stick!

I took them from Toronto to Buffalo in 2010 when I came back from India. It only cost $1.50 (I booked 15 min after they extended the schedule to include my days, the $1 fares do not last long), was clean comfortable and on-time. The double-decker bus was only about 1/3 full however and the wifi and power outlets on the bus were inop. I feel as though it was a great value.

I have to say Megabus is pretty good. They have a double decke bus on some routes. I have sat in the front row on the top deck a number of times from DC-NYC. I swear there is more leg room there than in other seats. The other seats are not bad at all, its just there seems to be more leg room in that seat.

Just make sure there are no low bridges on your route. This Megabus took a wrong turn and hit this bridge in unstate NY in late 2010.

I took them once between DC and Philly. Short trip so I didn't care about using a bus. It was easy and pretty good. Between DC and Philly the majority of riders were college students, there was a family or two and thats it. Nothing wrong with the crowd at all it was not your typical "greyhound" crowd. But again this was DC to Philly. I would recommend them. 8 hours on a bus is a long time but I unfortunately have done 8 hours a few times and even once 18 hours! Due tomthe Iceland volcano. Man that was not fun.

Oh yeah, the other passengers on Megabus are not bad at all. The fact that you can only book online keeps alot of the riff-raff off as they often do not have internet access, computers, or credit cards.

I have used them a couple of times - if you are in the Northeast that wornderful government monopoly, Amtrak, charges extorsionary prices (more expensive than the plane, and almost as much to go from NYC to BOS as from NYC to LA) so if you want cheap travel the bus really is your only shot. Nothing wrong with them at all, but getting in and out of NYC can be a pain because of the traffic.

I rode Megabus before and it was very pleasant. It's an upscale Greyhound.
You DO NOT want to ride a Greyhound bus these days. As usflyer_msp noted, Megabus requires a credit/ATM debit card and email. There is a segment of society that do not have these things, mainly ex-convicts just released from prison. Those people ride Greyhound.

I take megabus from Buffalo to Toronto a few times a year. Beats driving the QEW and the most I have ever spent is 20 bucks or so roundtrip. For short 2-3 hours trips its fine but I dunno if I could do them from BUF/ROC/SYR to NYC.

I use Megabus all the time in the UK. They are so much cheaper than National Express and are much quicker too. I find a lot of students use them here but still get a mix of older people and couples.

I emailed Megabus about this and they said they only release prices 45 days in advance but i have booked upto 60 days in advance previously.

Its generally about 45 days but is not exact. You have to check their website every day and see if your dates have opened up. I booked on 2/18 for a 4/1 trip.

I rode Megabus last November to Washington DC, now if you if you are tall, you do not want to ride upstairs. Believe me, I learn this the hard way.

Currently one can book tickets from DC to NYC through June 28. Seems I have to wait for a while before July opens up for booking.

Yep, he was. Typically they keep the roof lower, but when there's a tall person they raise it up, similar to how you might raise a garden/yard canopy.

Now those "raise at your own risk" signs make sense.

I did Philly to Boston on them for something like $20 round-trip. If the bus is half empty, it is awesome. Having the seat next to you free is very nice. On the way back, we had a full bus, so it was a little less comfortable. Legroom is tight, but we left on-time in both directions. The WiFi and in-seat power both worked. Just be sure to know where your stop is. The stop in Philly is very poorly marked.

Is flying nicer? Yeah, but it isn't ten times nicer. If you can spare the extra couple of hours, I'd say go for it. I wish they were still around in California.
