Best Shoot Out Scenes In Movies All Time.

Mon Apr 30, 2012 9:27 pm

There has to be hundreds of shoot outs Hollywood has shown us. I just watched Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and the scene when he's in Nepal at the bar is classic. He shoots at least 20 times from his six shot revolver before any reload. I digress. The scene in Untouchables on the US/Canada border with the trucks of whiskey is also a favorite of mine. Good guys or bad, share your favorites!

I've gotta say that one of the most impressive ones for me was in Boondock Saints, that the two brothers walk out and they say 6 men lined up in parallel with guns drawn. But in reality it was one man with six guns walking sideways.

I also liked the Waco Kid (Gene Wilder) in Blazing Saddles.

The one in the Hotel room with the Russian mob is also impressive.

One of my favorites is in the last James Bond movie, a Quantum of Solace. When they have a shootout during the opera Tosca at the open air arena in Bregenz. You don't hear the guns, you just hear Tosca during the scene. Best part of the movie, gave me chills.

A little trivia: The Waco Kid was originally to be played by John Wayne. He ended up turning down the role after reading the script, saying that it was really funny, but too vulgar for his image, and that he'd be the first one in line to go see it when it was released.

How about the ending of Scarface?

Dirty Dozen with Lee Marvin & Charles Bronson has a few good ones. I also like the scene in Rio Bravo with the Duke and Dean Martin where everyone is in the bar after chasing the shooter and everyone thinks "Dude" is too drunk to do anything and he picks off the shooter from the balcony after seeing blood drip into his shot of whiskey.

One of my favorite shoot outs is "Dillinger" played by Warren Oats in the title role.

Some others:
John Wayne in "True Grit."
Future shootout in "Fifth Element."
T2 Cyberdyne shootout
"Gunfight at OK Corral" with Burt Lancaster
"Magnificent Seven"

All great shootouts.

Just watched the end shoot out of Open Range again - classic Costner killing the cocky gun slinger before he can even draw his gat. Also, Death Wish 3 had a great shoot out in it as does The Professional when he kills the entire SWAT team.

Good movie!

Another movie that I classify like "Snatch" (a movie where it's fun and funny to watch as "various people kill and get killed") is "Smokin' Aces" and it has a couple good shootout scenes. Though I won't put them up there with "the best", I still enjoy it.

Your all wrong

The amount of gunfire a shootout does not make.

The triple shootout between Blondie, Tucco and Angel Eyes at the end of "The Good. The Bad and The Ugly" proves that.

Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven at the end when he walks in the bar. And when he walks out, says :

All right now, I'm comin' out. Any man I see out there, I'm gonna kill him. Any sumbitch takes a shot at me, I'm not only gonna kill him, but I'm gonna kill his wife. All his friends. Burn his damn house down.

The funniest shoot-out I've seen recently was in the otherwise poor-to-mediocre Hall Pass. Probably not the type of shoot-out you're asking about, though.

Don't watch too many films but the manhunt at the airport in Bullitt was pretty neat. I guess it stretches the definition of a shootout somewhat but come on, Steve McQueen chasing a guy with Pan Am 707s screaming past!

Lots of notable mentions from previous posters here. But this one is conspicuously absent:

The Victory Motel shootout at the end of L.A. Confidential. Not only do Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce stop to reload their shotguns and .38s constantly throughout the scene, but the staging and setup of how they defended themselves against their attackers was fantastic. Check it out!

I guess this one, in 'High Noon,' deserves an honourable mention - if only because it was just about the first!

Gary Cooper plays a sheriff who tries to raise a posse from townspeople to resist four outlaws who are coming after him; but fails, and has to take them on singlehanded.

Old-fashioned movie, really. They all occasionally aim - and mostly miss - and even sometimes have to reload......not like nowadays.......

As one of the comments records, John Wayne considered this movie 'un-American.' Apparently he didn't think there would ever have been a town in the West largely populated by cowards! Nor was he, I believe, overly keen on the heroine (played by Grace Kelly) shooting a man in the back!

For my part, I have only one crticism. A lot of the earlier scenes showed the interior of the sheriff's office, with rifles and shotguns hung on the walls. If the sheriff had taken a rifle along he could have dropped at least two of them before they got within pistol range - and if he'd taken a shotgun as well, he could probably have 'severely discouraged' the other two quite early on.

But I guess that would have meant a much shorter and less dramatic finale.......  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZil728hUy0&feature=related

Surprised no one has yet mentioned the shooting scenes from Young Guns I and II. Especially when Charlie Sheen gets it:

I'll also second Tombstone.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1vsmpGfB9Q
Action starts at 4:00

Finally...several scenes from The Book of Eli have to be mentioned. He uses a variety of weapons in the movie, including a sword and bow and arrow...

And his use of a gun is pretty good too...here's the movie's gunfight:

And what about Dances with Wolves? Some great scenes there too. Lots of arrows vs guns.
