Pixar's "Cars" Spin-Off: Planes

Sat Jun 16, 2012 11:11 pm

Anyone else on the forum read about this?

Apparently Disney is making a sequel to Pixar's "Cars" entitled Planes. Actually there's two "Planes" movies planned, the first of which is coming out next year.

"From high above the world of "Cars," flies "Planes," Disney's upcoming animated action-packed comedic adventure starring Dusty, a big-hearted, fast-flying crop duster who dreams of competing in the most exhilarating around-the-world air race in history. There's only a couple of not-so-small problems - Dusty is not exactly built for racing and he also happens to be afraid of heights.

Despite his fear and with encouragement from his mentor, a naval aviator named Skipper, Dusty narrowly qualifies for the big competition. Dusty's sportsmanship and speed begin to rattle the defending champ of the race circuit, Ripslinger, who will stop at nothing to see Dusty fail.

People seem to be divided over this film. Some are calling it the beginning of the end of Pixar-related films being "good." And they have good reason to worry, with DisneyToon Studios (aka the "Sequel Factory") producing this, some are expecting something along the same lines of awfulness as Tarzan 2.

The fact that it's a direct-to-DVD release also doesn't inspire much faith for some, but I've just watched a short called "Air Mater", which gives us a little taste of what "Planes" might be like. And it actually isn't that bad...a little cheesy perhaps...but definitely starting out stronger than expected in this little preview. Have a look here:

With all the planes we saw in the Cars movies, I'm glad that they are doing a movie about the aviation side of the Cars world. I just hope they do it justice. The plot has potential. Will the execution deliver?

Hm....this sounds interesting...

Do they have a Convair 880 named "Convy" who crashes a bunch?

I'm kind of excited about this, I thought the Cars movies (particularly the aviation aspects) were excellent. Although they were kids movies there was so much in them for us adult kids, and the short film you posted is excellent! So much detail, so much aviation insider references. They must have had some pilots on the creative team.

The Cars franchise as a whole is pretty polarizing. Pixar is held to a very high standard and people expect everything they do to be groundbreaking oscar-bait, which neither Cars movie is. The thing is though, John Lasseter never claimed everything they do had to be like that and he pretty much said Cars was made because he wanted to do something fun because he thinks cars are cool. That's what they did and it proved popular enough, especially with kids, for Disney to push the merchandise hard. Then when Cars 2 came around people thought they were just milking it, and while that's probably true to an extent, it was more a case of Lasseter wanting to do a spy movie and realizing he could make it work in the Cars universe. Again, it's not groundbreaking cinema like Wall-E or Up, but if you take it for what it is, it's still a good movie.
So as far as Planes go, I actually think it's a neat idea, and I hope it does well. I think anyone who regulars this site would be in the target audience of "people who think planes are cool". DisneyToon Studios is never going to be making stuff on the level as Pixar or Disney Feature Animation, but stuff like Planes and the Tinkerbell movies are a much better use of their time compared to pumping out awful direct-to-dvd sequels like they used to.

Disney - go for it. I think is is a good idea, it uses one of the most popular movie story lines of the underdog vs the world. I am quite sure they can make it so the American plane is a play on Boeing or an extinct brand (like McDD) name is going after an aircraft named on a play on Airbus. Of course they could have a sexy sounding Italian a/c, a stiff upper lift British one and of course a technocrat German one. It could work for kids and adults if done right.

I was turned off the moment it had the words "racing" and "dust-cropper". I thought it would go along the lines of...I don't know...not racing.

Ive met the producer of the two movies and its going to be an exciting series. I cant go much more than this but the background investigation is spot on reference us aviation geeks. From what I saw and discussed their first priority is realism (if youve seen Cars you understand) as it comes to "life like" objects. Non-disclosure sucks but believe me that its going to be a must see for aviation wackos.

Trikes are for kids!

It's too bad it won't get a theatrical run, then. Looks to be worthy of it. I guess it'll become a cult classic here?
