This is Kiss, my 4 years old Border Collie. I love her so much, a great dog.

Here she jumped on my lap, seeing if I would share a little bit of my breakfast with her, request that was promptly denied. When I say "excuse me" (in Portuguese) to her, she sits beside and stay quiet. I just love that.

Our Toby is a very fearful, skittish dog. If we walk at him too quickly, he runs. When we pet him, he often cowers. He's terrified of every single human in the world except about four people. I'm pretty sure he spent most of the first year of his life in a crate in someone's back yard.

What you describe sounds a lot like Barney. He's skittish at first, but then once he gets to know you, he'll love you to death.

Here's my handsome boy, Loki. He's an American longhair.

We saved him from a trash dumpster in my neighborhood - apparently, someone had simply thrown him in the trash! He was very ill with a VERY nasty respitory infection when we got him, and I have spent a small fortune in vet fees to return him to good health. He is my constant companion, and shadows me where ever I go within the house - I'm not sure if he's plotting my demise or if he just really love me. I'd like to think that he really loves me. =0)

I applaud you for knowing how to handle one of these dogs. If you know what you are getting into when you get the dog and plan for the proper obedience training that's fine. I am sure you won't let your dog roam the streets unattended.

The problem I have with people in the U.S. is that a lot of them just have to have the ability to say "My dog is meaner than your dog". For some people, an aggressive dogs give them the balls that they haven't managed to develop on their own." And a lot of these dogs just end up being chained to a tree in the backyard waiting for some kid to enter the area of their chain.
While I am not worried about the Caucasian Shepard itself, I do worry about what happens when Americans who buy them and don't train them properly and they end up in a shelter. Who will handle them there? Or for the person who enters the yard where one of these dogs live and end up with an encounter they will never forget!

One of the main problems with people in the U.S. is that they don't research dog breed before they get one. Then after they have a wild dog on their hands because they never trained it they just dump it off at the shelter. Or even worse they'll take it out to the country and dump it out of the car somewhere to fend for itself. They just tell the kids "Oh, the dog will be fine, he'll live off of berries and play with the bunny rabbits all day.' What actually happens isn't pretty and a lot of ranchers/farmers are inundated by dogs that this has happened too. My problem is that if the kids see the parents doing this what do you think they are going to do in the future themselves?

Border Collies are some of the (if not the smartest) dogs around. You see a lot of them in dog sports such as agility and flyball.
You can very easily train them to do all kinds of things. They have some of the best traits around, Intelligence, Loyality and a great need to please their owners. But they do need exercise to keep it all together.

The decision to get this breed was unfortunately not based on prior research (the dog was given to us - I blame my family) but at least we made sure that she got the proper training for her breed and the proper care - I cannot even calculate how many hours I have spent untangling and grooming her fur, something that is much much simpler than the training she required!

I see what problems occur when people get dogs who need special care and then the novelty wears off and the dog is in the streets. Having a dog is a great commitment and a dog is not just another security feature or an ornament to show around.

Exactly my point. Too many "bling bling" Pit Bulls out there. On FM1960 in Houston you should go in the Pet Smart on a Sunday. The store is full of people "parading" these bling dogs around using tow chains and a master lock as a leash and collar. They aren't in there to buy anything, just to parade around with a "oooh! Look at me what a man I be with my Pit Bull". Sometimes I can't tell the difference between the animals, the dogs or the owners.

Congratulations on being a responsible pet owner. I know you put in a lot of hours with training and with that dog's coat grooming too. But you are reaping the rewards with a well behaved dog.

My brother's dog Millie

My brother was driving home from work in Dallas a few weeks ago. He stopped at a red light near Love Field and waited. A car on the cross street stopped, opened the door, and tossed this puppy onto the median between two busy streets. Thankfully it was early in the morning so there wasn't much traffic. My brother ran the red, pulled up alongside the puppy, and picked her up. And now he has Millie, the puppy. He lives in an apartment, though, and doesn't have a yard. So he found a good home for her and she'll be headed to live with a family with a good sized yard soon. She's only the size of a kitchen tile in this picture!

Vik is Ben a Chin ? He does look like one. If he is anything like Sasebo the breed definitely has cat like tendencies. Sas will sit on my lap all day if I let her. Trying to get up from the computer to refill my coffee cup gets me a dirty look for disturbing her. She sure enjoys her walks and playing with any dog we meet . She also thinks all kids are just a strange type of squeaky toy that have to be played with.
I'm seriously thinking of getting another pound pup as a companion for this lil' monster. As long as I can find a match for her temperament.

They are quite aggressive and effective as guard dogs. Her fangs are very sharp at their back edge and the muscles on their neck are very strong. As a breed, they tend to be quite disobedient at times but this can be solved by proper training when they are young. They just have to get who is in charge from the start and even during their life, they need to be reminded. For example, when walking her, she is never allowed to lead, only to follow, I was told this was crucial for her never to assume she is in charge of the group. Although they are known to be aggressive and very protective of their territory, they are very good with all members of the family as well as people who are "accepted" in the house by the family. Mine tends to bark a lot at everything that moves but she is not as aggressive as other dogs I see around. She also behaves very well when she is being walked.

Aren´t they herd protection dogs? With this I mean dogs which are bred to act independently and are fiercely protective. As puppies they used to be raised with the sheep, so that they would see the herd of sheep as their pack and would be left alone out in the mountains to protect the herds from attacks by wolves and bears (or humans) without a human input. Usually they would only obey the owner and maybe his family. They are not bred for obedience, but for independent initiative.
The problem is that if you keep such a big, independent minded dog in e.g. an urban environment, it will protect the family against anything it perceives as a threat, without being ordered by the owner and this will cause accidents to happen.

Quoting MD11Engineer (Reply 78):
Aren´t they herd protection dogs?

Yes this is one of their historical roles. They have also been used as army guard dogs.

Quoting MD11Engineer (Reply 78):
They are not bred for obedience, but for independent initiative.

Very true, this is why training should be done at an early age to establish rough guidelines of behavior. They are not dogs that will start doing tricks if you train them but they can learn and be obedient in basics, like coming to you, sitting down and also establishing a specific role within the group. She is definitely a messy dog, they are very hard, almost impossible to train for full-time indoor living - they are also quite clumsy due to their size.

Quoting MD11Engineer (Reply 78):
The problem is that if you keep such a big, independent minded dog in e.g. an urban environment, it will protect the family against anything it perceives as a threat, without being ordered by the owner and this will cause accidents to happen.

I agree, the dog is definitely not for urban environments, especially apartments. Mine lives in our suburban house's yard and garden which is quite a big area for her. She is loud when she detects someone around the property but not more than other dogs I have had. Due to the way Greek homes are built, she has no access to the outside (unless being walked), the whole property is walled. I have only walked her without a leash on the countryside and she was behaving well in general.

My brother was driving home from work in Dallas a few weeks ago. He stopped at a red light near Love Field and waited. A car on the cross street stopped, opened the door, and tossed this puppy onto the median between two busy streets. Thankfully it was early in the morning so there wasn't much traffic.

I missed this before. That's actually how we got our cat when I was a kid. Someone threw him out of his/her car on the main road in town, and someone behind them picked him up and brought him to the local vet. We adopted him from the vet. Can't believe someone would do that....he was just a kitten!

Quoting ATTart (Reply 80):
Love it. I too had a dog like that.

Heh, I love it too. He does have some non-catlike qualities. He's incredibly loving to a select few people; I mean almost overwhelmingly loving. He's completely attached to my girlfriend and I.

Also, he's cool with sleeping as late as I want to sleep. He used to try and get me up, but eventually gave up on that.

Autothrust, what you said has a sexual connotation having to do with masturbation. That said, it's less about what you said and more about me (and others) being perverted

Oops, now i understand

Thanks for clarification.

I think petting would be correct. Or stroking when you're in a less perverted group

It doesn't really matter with this crowd, they all have their minds in the gutter 98% of the time.      Wow!

In other news, just scored a new job and get to take my dog to work with me.       That reduces my anxiety about going back to work and leaving the dog alone in the house.

Those are some mighty big ears.

So that's a Serval I guess. Are they pets in any normal sense of the word? How wild are they still?

Ah man, lucky! Although as much as I'd want to take Ben to work, it wouldn't be a good idea, as he'd try and kill everyone....

These are my 6 current dogs:

Nena. She was picked up from the streets when she was very little (she had no teeth) and she was being kicked by some people in one of this crappy towns. She's my best friend.

http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g466/airdres/nenaclarita.jpg

Clarita. I ran over her with the car (of course unwillingly). I stopped, she was alive, I took her to the vet, we operated on her (I say we because I had to help with the surgery given the circumstances) and she was saved. I could not find her family afterwards so she's now one of my own (full story here: http://www.care2.com/causes/shes-dea...ry-for-pup-who-runs-into-road.html ).

http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g466/airdres/nenalina.jpg

Lina. Picked up from the streets in a very rainy day, when she saw the door of our home open and she just went in. Her family found her two weeks after that but they were poor peasants and could not take care of her, so they asked us if we could keep her so she could have a better life and so we did. She's the oldest of the pack now!

Jaco. Our only male. He's the only one that has not been rescued or picked up from the street. He's the son of Lina, one day before we spayed her she had a heat and ran away and well, bitches are bitches... I saw him being born in the living room of our home.

http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g466/airdres/nenaleta.jpg

Violeta. Rescued from the home of some acquaintance that was not taking good care of her to say the least (with the mentioned acquaintance's agreement).

http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g466/airdres/nenaraque.jpg

Raquel. She would always stay in a road close to our home, it seems she was ran over by a car and has a bad healed fracture which gives her some difficulty with one leg but nothing grave. After about 4 months of stopping every day to give her food we could not have it that way anymore and we took her home.
If, for example, you came at four o'clock in the afternoon, then at three o'clock I shall begin to have existential angst because you nag as hell. www.alpharamirez.com

What do you do with him when you have to travel? I hear servals are very high-maintenance since they only bond to one or two people.

Yes, he is a Serval. He is very dog like, and I do take him for walks. I have had him since he was 8 weeks of age. He does have a lot and I mean a lot of energy.

He has bonded with myself, my partner and a good friend of mine who also has a Serval. My friend does not work for the airlines and hates to travel.. So when we are away, my friend does take care of him for us.

We did not get my Servals on an impulse. We had planned this for years. We tried to learn as much as we could, before bringing a Serval into our life. It has been so worth it, they have brought so much joy into our life. However it is not for everyone.
