Let's look at my home city, Fort Wayne,
IN. What's the most interesting, unique, or even ugliest building there?
This one is for those who live there, or have been there in the past. Any building, new or old, is fair game!
Some would say this one, One Summit Square, Fort Wayne's tallest, is the ugliest, with its brutalist concrete design.
In my opinion, I love it (and its design too), since it symbolises my home city to me. It is also the most interesting design.
It has a design that gives the illusion of twin towers--the taller, slender tower houses the lifts (I think there are 7 lifts in it) servicing all the 26 floors. I like the way they banded the lift tower in orange brick to break up the otherwise solidly brutalist look.
Here it is:
It was not originally designed this way, however. In the 1970s, Indiana & Michigan Power wanted to build a corporate headquarters downtown in Fort Wayne. Their original concept featured twin towers, one being the office tower (taller) and the other being hotel/residential in purpose. It was designed to glitter with glass and steel panels. See the concept photo below:
Due to funding and other issues, the design was cut down to the bare-bones reinforced concrete tower (and no twin tower) that you see today in Fort Wayne.
What is your choice for most interesting or unique or even the ugliest building in Fort Wayne?
Have fun!
