What Mir wanted to say is that it is only smart to announce something on a Saturday if you do not want the press to make a big deal out of it.* Most newspapers won't publish the news before Monday, and if anything important is going to happen over the weekend (with a likelihood twice as big as it is normally the case) it will blow Romney's decision from the front page.

Edit: or they speculate on TV. Perhaps there is an important TV news mag on Saturday they want to be on, I have no idea.

The declining circulation has more to do with the internet and can be witnessed in Europe as well.
Contrary to what you may think, newspapers generally do not lie - certainly no more than broadcasters. It is more a matter of opinion what you use for your report and what not. That's no evil-doing but a necessity as your report can only be so and so long, and it is often best to focus on one issue and not to digress.
You do have some excellent newspapers in the U.S.

AP (news source i actually trust) : It's Paul Ryan. Still not buying it till i see it but I trust whatever reports say a little more.

I never understood why Paul Ryan's name was brought up in the first place. He adds nothing to the ticket. I doubt he will be able to put Wisconsin in the Republican column either. He only represents the south suburbs of Milwaukee, not a statewide representative. I like the guy and all but I don't see him attracting anyone. He is young but he doesn't have appeal with the young vote like Obama.
Marco Rubio would at least put Florida's 29 electoral votes in his column. Now he has to fight harder for Florida.
Is this an early concession for Romney and a graceful way to bow out of politics?
I was hoping for Rubio, Rice, Martinez or Haley. Heck, even Allen West would have been a more interesting VP pick.

As for Romney's pick who knows. I don't think he wants to pick someone too different or exciting, it didn't work in 2008. He needs to pick someone qualified.

The challenge for Romney is to avoid the McCain/Palin fiasco and pick someone who won't overshadow him. This is difficult because he's very easily overshadowed, but I think even Ryan is too big of a figure. But if it is him, the campaign could have done worse.

I think this was a very daring decision on Romney's part... and very stupid. Ryan's budget is about to be put front and center. Absolutely gutting all domestic spending and bloating military spending. When the Democratic campaign machine gets their hands on it, they're going to rip it to shreds.

In a time when so many Americans are feeling the pinch, I just don't think that two detached rich white dudes are going to win the election.

I guess the idea that you win an election at the center has been lost somewhere.

As above, it puts panic into the minds of retirees, and they vote like crazy.

At worst, Twit should have picked someone neutral that mostly stays in the background (see Biden), not someone who pisses off a key voting demographic.

The attack ad-men are totally going to go nuts.

As was said earlier, if you live in a swing state, you might want to get rid of your TV.

It doesn't help with electoral votes in a key swing state.

It doesn't add any diversity in the ticket to help in key demographics like women or latinos.

I don't see how this brings in a single voter that hasn't already made their mind up, and I see how it helps many decide to vote for the other side. Oh, ok, maybe he'll carry Wisconsin north of Milwaukee.

Ryan will shore up the conservative base, he will draw over those 'independents' (another 'only in America'-ism) who are actually worried about the fact that their children will owe such a massive amount of money to everyone. He will be able to work with Boehner and Senate Republicans for whatever they decide to do. He's made his name nationally as being a strict fiscal conservative who I think would have the bureaucracy in his sights but will move to the centre a little but no doubt there's plenty of juicy soundbites to be used against him by Obama.

There is possibly a risk the grey army who typically would go GOP but will be worried about their entitlements disappearing.

This is where Romney and Ryan are going to feel the most pain

As a loyal Democrat, I love the choice of Ron Paul. Obama and the Democrats will beat him like a drum. Ryan has well defined fiscal policy beliefs - especially as to popular entitlements many need for their survival.

I suspect that Romney needed someone who would appease a broad range of Republicans. Ryan has strong cred with the conservative establishment and institutions, general fiscal conservatives, the 'tea party' wing as well as the rich and corporate funders of their campaigns.
I think Romney needed someone with defined connections to DC, in Ryan is seen as a powerful person with his leading the next Federal budget (rejected by the Demo controlled Senate).
He is another white guy like him (white male), apparently has no personal skeletons in his closet. He seems to be someone Romney could work well with and balance out some of Romney's flaws yet not be a bland guy as some others he apparently considered (Pawlenty, et al).
Unlike Sara Palin, Ryan would be reasonably competent as VP and if it comes, as President.
He is younger, gaining some votes from middle-aged voters.
He can speak well, he has been a speechwriter for top conservatives, balancing some flaws of Romney. Ryan will be a lighting rod from Romney drawing attention from his personal issues.
Ryan also has an easy, 'American' name to spell and remember, most likely Irish-Catholic, is from the Midwest and from a state (Wisconsin) that has been a battleground over government polices.
Ryan's choice will force the debates of the candidates as to the real issues of our time especially as to entitlements, Social Security, Medicare, Affordable Care Act, military spending, general spending, regulations and so on that Ryan has clear beliefs on.

Now the campaign is going to get interesting. I bet the Democrats and their PAC friends will go to political war against Romney-Ryan knowing who they will be going after. Expect Demo/Demo PAC's commercials showing seniors scared about losing Medicare, of the rich paying less in tax, massive cuts in Federal spending that would jack up state and local taxes to make up, what repealing the ACA would mean and so on.

I understand that, what I'm saying is that very few women 'lacking the traditional nuclear family' would vote for a super wealthy, very traditional, Mormon man with five sons even if he was a militant feminist. Similar to why Romney is wasting his time chasing after the black vote, they will either not vote, or vote for Obama. They're Obama's to lose not Romney's to gain no matter how much pandering he does. Plenty of women will still vote for Romney even if he doesn't engage in blatant misandry.

Men are the great untapped, give men policies we can get behind and we'll go vote, otherwise we won't care.

I agree to some degree, but he still isn't the head of the ticket, and the election is about who you want leading the country. It certainly will heighten the profile of any VP debates.

Broadly among Latinos you are correct, but Rubio is popular with Florida Latinos, especially the Cuban community around Miami, and he could have been a big asset in a crucial swing state, and helped in many others as well. I suspect either Rubio didn't want the job or that Romney's campaign found some skeletons in his closet.
