A week from today I will be flying to ATL for some training. I will be staying right near the airport. I will be in training from Tuesday to Thursday from 10am to 6pm local, so what is there to do in ATL at night? good food places/bars? Affordable transportation from the airport area to downtown?

Since you are an aviation enthusiast, I'd recommend the Delta Museum (they have weird hours.) Not really into clubbing and all that (to each's own) but the Coke Museum and the Aquarium might entertain you for a few hours. If you like outdoors stuff Stone Mountain is fun, but that would take you probably all day and I'm not sure how you'd get there. I personally find ATL pretty boring, but a lot of people love "Hotlanta" so I'm not sure where you'd fall
I think MARTA is probably the way to go. Won't go into the stereotypes about not getting shot or robbed because I've personally never been on it (the rep isn't that great but I'm sure it's fine)

Very cheap.. And I didn't really feel unsafe on it at all, even with all my luggage. One Christian faithful read out a piece of something that he wrote and that was probably as 'interesting' as it got.

The restaurants etc are all up in Midtown. I suppose some ATL locals will be able to help you out..

It's all about the destination AND the journey.

Check out Stone Mountain if the weather is clear.
For restaurants Midtown is indeed the place to go. If you like organic/natural foods check out R Thomas Grill, 1812 Peachtree Street NW. Cafe Intermezzo is just a block or two away and has a nice selection of desserts. Don Julio's has good margaritas. The Nook has good food and it's located adjacent to Piedmont Park, 1144 Piedmont Avenue. The Flying Biscuit is on the same street at the intersection with 10th street.
For an amazing view at night and a relatively cheap drink go to the Sundial Lounge at the Westin.
A little off the beaten path, but Atlanta has a very large Korean population, albeit a bit outside of the city. Pleasant Hill Road just west of Gwinnett Place Mall is littered with awesome Korean BBQ.
Pho Dai Loi is a total hole in the wall but the Pho there is awesome. 4186 Buford HWY, though it is indeed on the other side of the city from the airport. However, that whole area has a decent-sized SE Asian community and the food is very good if you're willing to be adventurous.

Spondivits is good plus you could make a daily tally of how many people ask you for money on the streets. Remember to say "Sorry I had to pay with a credit card and at the same time never look them in the eye." If you are flying on DL, I would encourage you to look at the full page ad about the city of East Point. According to the ad, there is everything to be had, seen and done there. You will find this in the Sky magazine although not too sure if it is in the October edition. The city is within easy walking distance. You could also quiz your classmates about how many actually live in the city of Atlanta and see the percentages of those that do compared to amount of students in your training class. Really a lot of interesting fun to be had.

For good, authentic Southern food it's hard to beat the Silver Skillet Restaurant at 200 NW 14th Street- http://www.thesilverskillet.com/. They were even featured on an episode of Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.
They're not open for dinner, but might be worth a trip for a good breakfast one morning.

Yes, good plain southern food. For dinner the Colonnade at the Cheshire Motor Inn on Cheshire Bridge Rd. is an Atlanta institution as well.
For great shopping there is Perimeter Mall and very near that is McKendrick's-----a suburb steakhouse.
Also along the same MARTA rail line (Perimeter) is Lenox Square and the adjecent Phipps Plaza.
It is good that so much of the city can be reached by public transportation.

Well, a local firestation station is handy so it isn't usually a problem.
Anyway, Atlanta has burned before,

Now there's one of the funnier things I've read in a while. I think I'd be safer stepping in front of a MARTA bus (assuming it arrived on time, oh look another funny!). Comically (in my mind), East Point is to the West and South of Atlanta, earning it's name from the site of the Eastern terminus of a railroad. One of those geography bugaboos.

All of Atlanta is flaming, if you get what I mean. It's the South for cryin' out loud. Things get a bit toasty.
Unless of course you meant to subtly imply that much of Atlanta's gay scene is to be found around the Midtown area.

When I worked for FL and had a long layover in ATL I used to take MARTA up to the Peachtree Station and walk up to Max Lagers at 320 Peachtree St NE. A good brewpub with great beer and food.
