Last question sorry. Just wanted to ask if anyone had a worst job experience and what it was like. I guess a school or college experience would be ok too or something different like that.

For me it was my brief career in movie special effects. When I was about 20 I worked one summer on the movie "Star Wars:The Phantom Menace". Now I don't know now but back then British film crews were kinda known for being cliquey and stuff I think. I didn't know that! The special effect head who hired me was really nice and friendly and I thought it would be great. But when I got there he kinda left and nowone said a word to me for about 3 weeks. Every morning everyone would go have breakfast and nowone ever asked me so I would go and sit on my own (sounds like a bad US teen show sorry!). Same for lunch and dinner really. Occasionally they'd give me something to do (like once a week for 1 hour!) but mostly I just made coffees and sat around. I used to go jogging at lunch time and spend some time in the gym while everyone else mostly went to the pub! So while it was great to see actors like Liam Neeson and Natalie Portman and see Star Wars sets and stuff it was also a World in which I really didn't fit in and probably shouldn't have been in in the first place so it would probably rate as my all time worst working experience! I guess the old saying is true a lot depends on the people you are working with!

Anyway any stories or thoughts etc. welcome.

One summer I worked at a warehousing firm. They were moving from 5 smaller facilities to one large integrated warehouse. As the smaller locations were emptied I was sent, by myself, to sweep the empty warehouses with a push broom. Bored out of my mind pushing a broom around empty warehouses.

Oh I've had several in my early years of employment.

First job, working in the kitchen of a Dunkin Doughnuts. Flour everywhere, roaches everywhere the cooks didn't care it was my job to sweep up the flour from the equipment and the floors and sweep up the roaches too. I stayed 3 days and quit. It was too disgusting for me. This was a full time summer job when I was in H.S. (1967)

I worked in the warehouse for a mail order firm picking orders. That wasn't too bad but then after the Christmas rush we had to inventory the warehouse. I learned what the term "bored to tears" meant. This was a part time evening job when I was in H.S. (1969)

In Chicago you can get a job with an employer where the company is known as a "hole". When you work for these kinds of companies you feel like you are living in a hole. No chance for advancement, nasty supervisors, etc. You can just say"That place was a real hole." I have never heard anyone use that term outside of the midwest.

Many thanks for the replies. I thought it was funny talking about boring and stuff. I can definitely understand that. However some of my best working times I had were doing data entry at stuff for a temp company. I liked that I would move place every week and I could sit on my own with a coffee and sometimes my headphones on and just do my own thing.

But I guess I would agree maybe it was kinda a "hole" thing as it did in the end get a bit boring as nothing really changed in any way!

K-Kafe. At Christmas. Any other time of year is one thing. But, at Christmas, people expect the service of Tavern-On-The-Green. At K-Mart. And let you know when the service is less than that. I don't mind retail at Christmas. I get my mind into the whole "well, we are all in the same boat, so why fight it" mentality. But, when people expect five-star cuisine at K-Mart, give me an effin break!!

I've had several but two which stand out are:

1. My wasted year and a half selling real estate. (This during the early 80's recession where the prime was 21%)
2. My month trying to sell new cars Toyotas (1989) when they rolled off the dealer lot as fast as we got them.
3. Absolute worst which lasted one day: trying to work in a "boiler room operation" selling bogus light bulb products!

I've learned one thing about sales. Sure, the gift of gab is great but, I'd say 2/3 rds. of successful commission sales people are Self Starter and being organized like a anal retentive Nazi! I am neither of the above. I have ADHD and these sales occupations/careers were like me trying to prance around in a Speedo Thong and turn tricks on the beach. Not happening!

During my one month foray into car sales; I worked at a Toyota dealership back in '89 where anyting with Toyota on it flew out of the showroom/dealership. There was one dude who made over $100, 000 US remember this was 1989. He had these tickler files. For example if he sold me a car several years back he'd have the name of my cat and her birthday and send out a birthday card to my kitty reminding me he still sells shiny new Toyotas at the same dealership and now is the time to buy a new car from him! He was planning to hire his own secretary. If I tried doing this I'd be banging my girl friday and sales, what sales?

With the sleazy boiler room light bulb scam, I listened to a guy who was an actor and laid on the BS, saying such drivel as Hey, how ya doin? Ya gotta crawl before ya walk! I tried the same bit and couldn't keep a straight face and the redneck on the other end of the line cussed me out and threatened to charge this company whith phone harrassment!

I also have enojyed retail quite a bit. I worked in a big records store in the jazz/specialities dept. It was a lot of fun and we got to listen to music all day in a nice shop and stuff. Christmas was busy but I enjoyed it and we gor a bonus. Inventory night not so good but still ok! I can imagine people wanting 5 star service at K-Mart would be pretty tough customers!

I have also never been good at sales. The best I can do is find something good which will sell itself. I can't do bs or influence people to save my life! In fact the less I do or say generally the better for everyone! One time I was temping and ended up at a media company. They gave me a bunch of big company ceo's/directors phone numbers and told me to call as many as I could trying to get them to come to some stupid phone promotion party or something. It was awful. Like some busy millionaire ceo is really gonna fall for this crap! So I phoned a few and then had a massive panic attack and said I was sick and just about made it home. That was the end of my temp career! I think they shouldn't have even put me on that job. I was more a data entry guy.

My current job, one year ago, I was sent to a resident's room to check on her since she wasn't down for breakfast or her morning meds. Yeah, there was a reason for that. I discovered her in her room, slumped over her walker and lifeless... apparently suffered a massive heart attack. To top it off, it was during a survey by the State of PA. Needless to say, it was one of my worst days ever on any job...

Look at peopleofwalmart.com and you get an idea of the type of people I delt with. I am currently an Italian cuisine distribution engineer. The pay is less, but the customers are better!

Aside from that...summer camp counselor. Especially when you have a kid brother or sister and thinks he/she can get a way with everything just because you are there.

harsh. I can't say I've had that happen to me. That's pretty rough. Other lousy jobs for me include working as a cashier at a convenience store on Pittsburgh's South Side. One customer in particular was very unreasonable and impatient. I'd have a huge line of customers waiting to have their items checked out, and I have this d-bag at the other end of the counter demanding I come over and help him with something down there. I guess he should have gone to an eye doctor and had his eyes checked; he couldn't see the 12 people in the line he was NOT in...

I guess other fellows in retail could relate to that...

  

Worst job from the standpoint of physical exertion ?

Not much chance I'll EVER forget THAT one ! When I was in my early 20's I got a job working "casual" at this freight company in Cincinnati, called "Husman-Roper Freight LInes"; when you are in the Teamsters Union, it sometimes takes years to get a "steady job", (where you're actually hired, and on the seniority list of a company ); most freight companies hire what are known as "casuals", when they are real busy, and even though they have to pay you the same hourly wage as the "regulars", you just work when (and if) they need you, and have to get up early every morning and start making calls, until you find a company that needs "casual" help that day; anyway, I worked "casual" for H&R for several months, busting my ass every day, and FINALLY got hired "regular"; at the time, H&R only had terminals in St. Louis, Missouri and Cincinnati, Ohio. Their biggest customer was Proctor & Gamble. Better known by the general public as "P&G", ( and by all Teamster workers as "Push & Grunt" )

Anyway, P&G's main plant is in Cincinnati, (where the company started out at), but they had other plants in other cities, and the P&G plant in St. Louis is where they made the Comet Cleanser at, and H&R and one other carrier (Western Express) hauled "buku" loads of Comet from St.Louis to Cincy every night. At the time I got hired as a "regular" by H&R, the bottom 2 guys on the seniority list had to take two trailer loads of Comet to P&G every day and unload it. The "deal" was, you hooked up the first trailer, went to P&G, backed into a dock, hand-stacked every case of Comet onto a pallet, (which was sitting on a pallet roller); At the warehouse where we took the Comet to, P&G wouldn't come into a trailer with a forklift, (which all have a hydraulic operated "clamp" on the front ), so we had to stack the cartons in a particular "clamp pattern", either 4 cases high, (for Comet "36"), or 5 cases high (for Comet "48"); when you got the "load" stacked, you got behind it and manually "shoved" it to the back end of the trailer, where the clamp operator grabbed it with the clamp, and took it away to stack in big "rows", either 4 or 5 "stacks" high; each trailer load of Comet had the exact same number of cartons, 900 cartons for C 48's and 800 cartons for C36, and each trailer load contained exactly 45,000 lbs of Comet;

So you unloaded the first 45,000 load, then took the empty trailer back to H&R, parked it, hooked up the 2nd load, back to P&G, unloaded it, and took the 2'nd trailer back to H&R; so......every day, 5 days a week, you had to hand stack and "push out" 90,000 lbs of Comet, plus make two round trips to P&G and back; (for which we got 8 hrs regular pay, plus 1 hr of OT; even though handling 90,000 lbs of Comet in 9 hrs is a HELL OF A LOT of work, it can be done in as little as 7 hours....."if"....if the clamp operator takes your loads right away and doesn't hold you up, and "if" everything else "goes just right"; for about the first month you unload two loads of Comet every day, every muscle in your body aches like a bitch ! Most guys can't even do it, and many quit after just a day or two, (or three); I unloaded the damned Comet for a year and a half, until they hired another couple of guys, and I got two places "up" on the seniority list. I have often wondered if my "experience" unloading the Comet was what got me into such "good shape" that I STILL look like a "fitness fanatic", almost 60 years later ! Actually, I can't really say it was my "all-time worst job", because I was making a pretty fair living, it was "healthy", and after the first month or so, it really didn't bother me that much, PLUS, I almost always got finished in 6 1/2 to 7 hrs. and got paid for 9 hrs every day. (but it was DEFINITELY a lot of work ! )

After I finally got enough seniority to get off of the Comet "gig", I occasionally had to go th P&G with the Duncan Hines Cake Mix; Physically, that was about twice as hard as the Comet, because instead of 800 and 900 cartons, the damned cake mix was stacked clear to the roof, and each trailed had 3,000 cartons ! Even though each carton only weighs like 6 or 7 lbs, you had to "lift" about 5 cartons at a time, and to pick up 5 side by side cartons, you have to "squeeze" like hell", so the middle cartons don't fall out ! Plus the clamp pattern is kind of complex, and you have to reverse each layer..........so unloading cake mix was much harder than the comet, took half again as long, but fortunately we didn't haul all that many loads of it.

Damn.......here it is, Christmas day, and I'm sitting here about to work up a sweat, just THINKING about how I used to have to bust my balls when I was young !

Worst job experience. Wow, there have been many nightmarish situations over the years. But the all-time worst was being terminated from my job at a major multi-national healthcare insurer when the idiot Vice-Presidents at the Connecticut home office decided to close the office I worked at here in Phoenix and moved the entire operation/workload to an office in Bangalore, India where labor cost were MUCH lower. Picture this scene. I drive into the parking lot, park my car, and go into the lobby of the building, where I am met by the Human Resource Manager and one of the Directors from my department. I am escorted into a small conference room, informed that this office being closed, and that my services are no longer required. I am told that I may NOT go upstairs to my office and collect my personal items from my desk, I was not allowed to say goodbye to the folks I managed, and that I was NEVER to come back onto company property. I was then told I could leave and that the details of my severance package and my personal items would all be boxed up and sent to me via UPS later that day. I was in complete shock, as the employees at the Phoenix office had no idea that this so-called "operations consolidation" was going to happen.

I walked out of the conference room to find a fellow manager waiting to go into the conference room (she was terminated as well) and two corporate security managers waiting for me in the lobby, who briskly walked me out of the building, across the parking lot, and put me into my car - while reminding me that I was not to come back onto company property because that would negatively affect the terms of my severance package. Then they take my company ID badge and building access card from me, and turn around and just walk back into the building!! Talk about a heartless, soulless corporation..... almost all of the people that worked in that particular office were terminated that day. The worst, by far.

You know, I've been recieving a pay-check for 28 years (since 16) and, I can truthfully say, that I really haven't had a bad job experience. Yeah, some jobs sucked and some were tedious, but I learned from every one of jobs and didn't ever dread having to go to work.

I guess, If I had to pick a worse experience...it was when I was running a rather large operation that required a lot of my time and energy. That was taking away from my family. I got sucked into the "need to get the work done" mentality and was neglecting the real important stuff. So, I backed out of that job, and am now much happier, though I enjoyed the work immensely.

But, I also learned from that experience.

There was this time when I worked at Subway, and this customer ordered a Philly Cheesesteak with ketchup...

I forgot to add that the summer out of high school I got a job at a pizza place called Pappys (like Shaky's)
They worked you the way those poor kids were worked to the bone at Cathy Lee Gifford's infamous sweat shops. I didn't even have the chance to flirt and chat with the mini skirted waitresses. I had to renig on a promise to service a leggy lass's
sexy high arched feet because we had to flood mop the place! Flood mopping is flooding the kitchen and restaurant with up to 4 inches of hot sudsy water and sucking it all up in a wet vac Hoover that looked like the robot on Lost In Space. I had just enough time to make out with her on our dinner break. I had to multi task between tonsil hockey with this hottie and finishing the pizza I expertly made for us. The manager was like a broken record: moo moo move it!

My current job which I just got off short term disability. My department is a serious bunch of crooks who made my life a living hell. I'm staying with it until april/may then going to graduate school back in LA. Despite all the anxiety and fear about getting fired and railroaded, it actually gives you a liscense to be a prick to the people who treat you like crap.

Well this summer I went to a job interview at a call center, by call center I mean a place were people phone people and disturb them while eating dinner. I wasn't comfortable with it, but I needed the money. But after discovering that you had to read from a carefully detailed script, and deliberately trick customers and don't take a no for a no; I told my "boss" infront of 30 other applicants and workers: That I had no intensions of doing this kind of work, and I wish you a all good day. And went off.

Well, perhaps it doesn't fit under "Worst job experience" Here is a few:

While I do love my current job as a dish-washer (Great pay, great FREE food and friendly co-workers) It can sometimes get quite nasty, having to DIG soaked leftovers of food out of a "gutter" we have in the middle of the kitchen. EVERY day!

Or when I was a conscript in the army, and had to litteraly remove human feces from the floor with my bare hands. Or when an idiot of a "fellow" soldier, thought it was entertaining to remove the safety of his loaded M16A2 and sticking it in my face...

This is a method that is commonly used in large corporations these days.
The reason that they don't want you to go back to your office is because there is a chance you can sabotage the computer system or destroy some company property. It could also demoralize other employees. I know of one large corporation that while they were telling you that you are being "let go" they'd have your severance pay check already cut and handed to you on your way out the door. The same company used off duty police officers to walk you out to your car.

Another company I know of told all the employees to stay in their offices on a floor by floor basis and don't log into your computer until 11:00am. This is when the managers went around grabbing the people to be let go from their offices and taken to "the room". At 11:00am the managers let everyone that remained that "they were safe, for now..." and they could continue working. One woman there said she knew she was going when she tried to log into the computer and it came back with "UserID not found".

And then there was this guy I knew that was grabbed by his manager and fired at 9:00am, but the manager made him wait in the managers office until 4:30pm before he could leave. The answer was "I don't want you upsetting the other employees".

A lot of these kinds of activites are seen in companies which "manage by fear" rather than by accomplishment.

Worked for one company, and the CEO was a control freak.

When our company cars went in for a service, they had tracking devices fitted, without our knowledge. We eventually got told. But being questioned as to why I was at a pub until 10pm on a Tuesday night bugged me.

Then we got told about the tree of truth. Basically it was ok to bend the tree into the telling lies section, because that generates better results. If you are too honest, don't expect to sell or make commission.

Sales targets would change half way through the month. So instead of generating £40,000 of sales to trigger bigger bonuses, it would go up to £120,000

Expense payments... £5.45 for a club sandwich and Coke was too extravagant, while staying at hotel during a trade show.

Expenses never paid on time, sometimes waiting up to 6 weeks.

Written warning for not having my company cell phone turned on during the weekends.

My territory was expanded, from a nice little area to.... Everything north of Nottingham, Scotland and Northern Ireland. So went from doing 60,000miles a year to 130,000miles a year.

I left after 3 long years, but he still had the cheek to deduct my final paycheque and outstanding holiday pay for not returning a company wind cheater jacket.

Quite the contrary ! I don't even think about all the drudgery I put in at "push & grunt" when I see their products in stores. I'll admit though, I never buy Comet, but only because I LOVE "Bar Keeper's Friend"; that stuff is awesome !

There was never any problems with dust at P&G; nearly everything was in sealed cans, bottles, etc and then packaged in cartons of various sizes. Another point that I'm beginning to think quite a bit about; even though I did a lot of hard manual stuff back in the day.........how many guys do you know that get married again at age 80, and still climb trees, walk 10 or 14 miles at a time, and still wear the same pants size they did 20 years ago......either a 34 or a 36 ? I really think working hard was great exercise. In the summer months, I'll set up my saw mill and saw boards all day long, but I don't do it in the hot sun anymore; I have my big HD trailer "modified" now so I can set the mill up on it, then I can drag the whole thing anyplace I want with my Kubota. I'm always in the shade that way.

Mine is aviation related. I worked for DL OH when I was 19 and was hired just as one guy was quitting and another was going off on vacation. The guy was told as soon as I could work on my own, I he could go on his vacation. Their training was poor. When I had questions, I was pushed aside, they entered the code into the system and the off we went onto the next passenger. No time to learn when on the job with 100 of passengers.

There were always delays and cancellations. I was told it was my fault. "This never happens! Its because you're new and you're here." I was told. I was training to use the Jetway and was told the dangers of letting the jetway sit on the CRJ stairs too heavily, the damage it could cost, the fines and how I'd get fired. I only practiced once and my trainer took over because I was too slow. The next day I was told I would be running the gate all by myself. I mentioned how I hadn't really been trained on the computer system nor the jetway and that was expecting a lot. "You'll learn, plus we'll give you a radio". I got home, was in shock, typed up my notice and handed it in the next morning.

I learned a lot about training styles and to SPEAK UP. I was young and am very happy where I am now.

The worst job experience I can think of is the time when I was working as a disability support worker and my gloves tore as I was cleaning a 55 year old's rather soiled behind. I swear I could smell 'it' on my hand for days, no matter how much I scrubbed. Other than that, I've had a rather pleasant working history. That particular job was in fact the most rewarding I've had to date (despite aforementioned incident).

First day on the job with Bar Harbor Airlines (EA/CO express in Boston). It was 1990, just after Lorenzo took over Texas Air, and not long before EA folded.

I was a college kid working on the ramp. It was pouring rain. Flight came in, and I unloaded the bags into a cart. One of the rampers had put a vat of oil in that cart, and I didn't see it.

I ended up ruining everyone's bags.

Guess who was on the plane? Lorenzo himself!

I thought I would be fired on the spot!

That was the day ENRON declared bankruptcy. I knew it was going to happen since the Thursday before, which was the day our Dynegy competitors decided they would not buy us out. A friend from Treasury called me that Thurday and told me to go on a shopping spree on the AMEX Corporate Card. I didn´t do it of course but a lot of my colleagues did.

That Monday was awful. When we arrived, all our phones had the voice mail light blinking. The message was. "As of now, you have 30 mins. to pack your desk. You have been terminated. Boxes will soon be delivered to your floor. Please take only two. Once you leave the doors to your floor, your badge will be deactivated and you cannot come back inside, so be sure you are leaving with all your belongings."

My office was in the 60th floor and by 12 noon I could see down the window below and it resembled an anthill with the ants fleeing. I seem to recall we were 7,000 employees on that building and that day 5,500 were terminated. People were stunned, some were hysterical, others were crying. Keep in mind many lost their entire life savings that day.

A colleague was arriving that day from Canada, since we were also negotiating up to the week before to buy TransCanada in Calgary. He showed up with his travel expense sheet prepared and he was told to hold on to it and "get in line for the bankruptcy judge to see you." It was like $7,000 USD. I never knew if he did get them back. He was a Chinese expat and he and his wife had just had a baby.

I was not fired, since my proyect needed to be finished and I was the only one who knew the important parts. I lasted until the following February, but coming into work was very depressing as our Smith St. building became an empty shell. Entire floors were empty and even on my floor, there were like only 6 of us at any one time. No heating, bathrooms were not cleaned, no cafeteria. It was like going to work after the zombie apocalypse.

Really sad and traumatic experience and to this day I´m angry that such a great company was destroyed by a bunch of greedy, unscrupulous bastards.

A friend of mine worked for Enron. The first sign of the downfall came a week before. Everyone but the upper management had their 401k's frozen and no withdrawals were allowed. So as the stock price took a nose dive the employees just had to sit there and watch as their 401K savings evaporated before their very eyes.

To receive a call during my honeymoon on the other side of the world that I am fired. Before I left my boss said my job is safe though there would be layoffs (it was shortly after 9/11 and my job was depending on travel and airline clients stopping advertising abruptly). Must have been quite detective work to reach me. It was a shock for sure, but not for long as I got payed for almost 5 months still, and found a better-paid job within two months, so for three months I got double-pay!

I was a college kid working on the ramp. It was pouring rain. Flight came in, and I unloaded the bags into a cart. One of the rampers had put a vat of oil in that cart, and I didn't see it. I ended up ruining everyone's bags. Guess who was on the plane? Lorenzo himself! I thought I would be fired on the spot!

I had a job back in the 70's assembling truck trailers. I worked for most of a summer and it was Hot. There were only fans to cool off, and we had to wear long-sleeve shirts to protect us from chemicals; I think. I mostly remember being thirsty just about all day long, even after work. I decided it was time to quit when someone working inside the trailer actually drilled thru and into my leg!!!!!. Luckily I was wearing loose-fitting pants and the drill bit got tangled up and jammed before going into my leg.

Welcome to my life. Been at it for over 4 years now.

They recently brought back the employee of the month reward after a 2 year hiatus. I tied with another co-worker for most amount of nominations from residents/family members/etc. The managers unanimously chose the co-worker for employee of the month. I'm happy for her tho; she's a good worker and was there longer than I was. I still feel that I got shafted tho...

Not a single manager's vote? Sometimes I do wish I could just drop off the Earth.

What your are doing is really important and commendable. I wish there were more people like you. So who cares about a dumb "employee of the month" award? as long as you are happy and satisfied with yourself, that´s what matters.

Thanks. I do get nominations from residents and family members, and that does matter. It just seems like there's a lot of talking behind my back, and that kinda hurts...

That's not even what I went to school for. I'm a city planner. I hold a masters degree in this field. Unfortunately it's not getting me noticed enough.

I have read some of the posts above, some of you got fired/laid off. I am fortunate that that has not happened to me. I do get benefits where I work, but I want so much more out of life (house, kids, etc), and I can't have any of that at my current job. I don't make a whole lot.
