How much of that was done off the back of his success that he gained by allegedly doping?
Reading more and more about him, having known nothing about him prior to this story blowing up, I can see from reports both contemporary to this story and reports predating this story considerably that his public face is little more than a thin facade which he uses, and the real person underneath is quite different in personality.

Hopefully we'll find out soon. But if the allegations that the majority of the competing cyclists were doping is true as well then I don't know why the spotlight is solely on Armstrong.

Over the years I've seen plenty of other riders and athletes under the spotlight for performance enhancing violations, so its far from just Armstrong being picked on, but the reason why Armstrong is in the spotlight now is because he's been dogged wi allegations for the past 20 years or so and the nature and extent of the violations are to such a degree that it's become quite a good deal.
A lot of the techniques he is alleged to use have been banned for a long time, but have been difficult to test for - hence after-the-fact reexamination of the tests done shedding new light on matters, which just goes to show that you might get away with things now, but better tests will always come along. The testers can improve their techniques at any point in the future, but the abuser cannot equally benefit from better techniques to hide past infractions because the blood has already been taken.
The fact that the allegations against Armstrong don't stop with him, but instead covers team members etc and many others, all designed to support him in events, and his success is why this is a big thing.

The others that doped and that he beat have all been caught and didn't lie as long as him. Also, he is not suspected of just doping but of being the provider for his team members, the famous "Postal train" that greatly helped him win all his titles. Other leaders may have doped as much as him but not necessarily their team members.
Furthermore he had the best techniques that existed. Besides, some "naturally gifted" riders may not benefit much from doping, while someone with less abilities will gain greatly, so you can't just say "they all doped so it's fine".

This is probably the best opinion of the thread so far. I suppose we 'care' to some micro-extent, else we wouldn't be posting here, but I think the desire to comment is probably driven more by outrage and/or irritation than any kind of real concern.

You may or may not be right. If you are then you are mostly right but I still think the outrage is over the top. We have politicians all over the world doing much worse things with our money and that actually affects us directly.

What are you talking about? You obviously haven't been following the sport. Have you ever heard of Jan Ullrich, Marco Pantani, Tyler Hamilton and a multitude of other first tier/team captains who have been busted for doping in the last 15 years?

For example, he claimed that he was clean during his comeback in 2009 & 2010 (he's already been stripped of his results for those races), and denied the story about having a positive test covered up in 2001. So either the report is part fact, part fiction, or Armstrong still isn't telling the whole story. And he's still basically calling his accusers liars.

He looked up "cheating" in a dictionary and decided that it didn't apply to him? The worst part was probably when he was asked about Emma O'Reilly and admitted that he couldn't remember whether he sued her or not, because "we sued so many people...".

Well Tiger Woods didn't cheat. The sex addiction story was an "only in the US" kind of thing. It seems he really needed to fuck around to be on top of the sport, though.
All sports have cheaters and many don't really try to find them (like football/soccer) however not in all sports has doping the same results, you won't become a start basketball player thanks to products.

Well there are many tactics, for example when he mentions blood transfusions, those weren't detectable until a few years ago. If you used your own blood that is.
