Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma: What To Expect?

Fri Mar 08, 2013 8:13 pm

Hello Everyone. As the topic basically states, I have been diagnosed with Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma on my right Adrenal gland. It has caused me to be VERY hypertensive (e.g. 198/149), Low potassium levels (2.3 during my last blood test), and aside from that, I am almost constantly tired, weak, and gaining weight even though I don't eat much.

Does anybody have any experience in this field who can let me know what to expect. I see a Nephrologist on April 5, and I'm kind of scared. Also, is it possible that this could be affecting my mood (mood swings such as happy/depressed/cool/angry for no reason whatsoever)?

Any advice or help would very greatly be appreciated.

My doctor has tried several different blood pressure medicines and none have brought it down. I am currently taking Spironolactone as of right now.

I am not a Dr but I would imagine the high BP and adrenaline would be a large contributor to your mood swings. I have been reading on overactive nerves and how they relate to keeping you in a constant fight or flight mode. Somewhere it mentioned about the potassium and magnesium imbalance created in your urine causing you to create more adrenaline... (I think it was those two) Cut down on sodium if you eat a lot of that.

To be a hippie... Yoga may help you start to relax your body. Breathing from your stomach gently may help calm the hard tense times where you don't want to be touched or have anything at you or in your face. 7 seconds in through your nose, 11 seconds out through your mouth. That is some high BP! You must be ready to jump out of your skin...

Write down your questions for the Dr!

I wish you all the best,
Jeff

Yes, probably the cause of it. I´m surprised you are seeing a Nephrologist until April the 5th. Seems like a long time with your condition. Have you considered seeing an Endocrinologist for your BP issues and mood swings?

I have not actually seen an endocrinologist since I was in my pre-teens. My blood pressure started rising in late 2008-early 2009. The tumor was actually recently discovered last year, after my share of doctors. I had been in the hospital, ER, and to other doctors regarding my BP until my current Dr. found out what it was and ordered a CT scan to confirm it.

Your diagnosis most probably is Conn's Syndrome. Its more likely in patients with Adenomas, but rarely it can happen with people who have a carcinoma. You are feeling weak because of the low potassium (hypokalemia)  . Bassically what is happening is that the tumor is continously secreting a hormone called Aldosterone, which takes part in blood pressure regulation. Only in your case, Aldosterone is out of control and its driving the BP up. This tumor was probably small and you didnt really get the effects of it, and only now its developed to its present state.
