Quoting Klaus (Reply 5): For the rare cases where I actually need Windows, I have separate XP instances running in VMware (tax program, FPGA compiler etc.). I have not yet had a need to use any newer Windows version, and of course I use the internet almost exclusively from the Mac side. |
Quoting JETSTAR (Reply 14): I know it is a different version that we use on PC’s, so I wonder if Microsoft will still continue to support XP for their major customers even when they have said they will no longer support XP for PC’s next year. |
Quoting JETSTAR (Reply 14): I will skip 9, take a pass on 10 and probably switch over to 11 because by that time my computers will probably need replacing. |
Quoting SXDFC (Thread starter): Windows XP, Who Still Uses It? |
Quoting JETSTAR (Reply 8): I still use XP on my laptop and desktop, XP does everything I need to do on a computer, I am not a computer geek or play online games, I just use the computer for my business programs and internet use. I bought a new desktop computer last year and had it built up at a local computer store, they ordered a motherboard for me that was compatible with XP and they copied everything over from my old PC, I also needed a new laptop, but I still wanted XP and there was nothing out there that could be downgraded to XP, but the technician who built up my computer had a 3 year old laptop that he was selling and although it had 7 in it, the laptop would support XP so he installed XP for me and then copied everything over from my old laptop. So far both computers are doing fine without any problems. I will continue to run XP until it is impossible to buy a computer that cannot be downgraded to XP and then run whatever is Microsoft has out, probably Windows 10 or 11 or maybe later versions based on the length of time I keep my computers. I got my first PC in 1990 running DOS 5.0 with a single 10mb hard drive and went through the upgrade route every time Microsoft came out with a new operating system so I experienced the good and the bad from Microsoft, especially like ME which was a disaster. So for me XP has been great and I intend to stay with it as long as possible. |
Quoting TLG (Reply 20): My question is: what is the main reason behind it? Do you feel that XP does something that Windows 7 does not? |
Quoting type-rated (Reply 23): I'm sticking with XP for the time being because XP: Runs everything I need at a speed that is satisfactory for me. Doesn't crash at all. I can't justify spending quite a bit of money on something that will give me virtually no return at this point. (Pretty Windows). The last item is a biggie. A lot of users feel that way. I have found that most users upgrade their OS's based on need. Like there is an app they want to run and it requires a newer version of their OS. In this case most people will spend the money to upgrade their OS, it's justify able. But to spend the money just to upgrade an OS just "because" is a waste IMHO. This is what happened to a lot of Win 98 users. All the Anti-Virus manufacturers stopped supporting Win 98 and users were forced to migrate to something newer. In most cases this was XP. |
Quoting TLG (Reply 20): My question is: what is the main reason behind it? Do you feel that XP does something that Windows 7 does not? Or that it does it better? Is it simply because you have become so familiar with XP that you don't want to get used to something else? |
Quoting TLG (Reply 24): Your reasons include not upgrading because it's not worth the cost. I'm also curious about users, such as JETSTAR, who go to considerable extra expense to get XP when it's necessary to buy a new computer for other reasons. At work we had a customer who did that. He was an older gentleman who was used to Windows XP and Office XP. The tech who took his new laptop with Windows 7 and installed Windows XP and Office XP fought the installation the whole way through because of incompatibility with hardware and drivers. He eventually was successful, but the customer basically doubled the cost of the new computer. |
