I dont think and dont hope that they´ll try to revive the name again. Expensive mistake. There will be a ultraluxury Mercedes based on the S-Class with hopefully a more distinct body, positioned somewhere between the upper end of the traditional S-Class and the late Maybach. I expect it to be a rival to the Bentley Flying Spur and RR Ghost, in Stuttgart fashion with tons of gimmicks.
A classic fourdoor, and a stretch are announced (danger here, as Mercedes never managed to build an attractive stretch since the 600 of the 60s!). Possible is also a fourdoor convertible.
The "new" Maybach was a mistake from the start. First the name was dead for more than 50 years, hardly anyone rermembered them. Then the original Maybachs, while being Germanys ultraluxury brand, the German Rolls-Royce, with few exceptions never carried bodies as elegant as many of the English original. Maybachs were seen as a statement of extreme wealth, not taste. They also sold in microscopic numbers. In that sense the Mercedes-Maybach was a worthy successor.

Never understood why Mercedes-Benz thought they needed a halo marque. They safely occupy the upper stratosphere of the automotive world already; if anything the Maybach dragged the marque down with its unfortunate connections to rappers, oligarchs and sheikhs with far more money than class.

Because they lost out on Rolls to BMW and Bentley to VW, their main German competition. Resurrecting what had historically been another prestigious nameplate was their less than successful consolation prize.

In the "massmarket" lower luxury class that is somewhat true, Mercedes rules. But the brand cant compete with RR or Bentley when it comes to the "upper stratosphere". Where Mercedes ends, RR only starts. Next to a Phantom a full-spec S600 looks like a VW Golf next to a Jaguar - pretty poor.

Problem One was that The Maybach of our generation was essentially just a gussied-up version of the S-Class Mercedes.....and a thinly-disguised one at that. Problem Two was that who currently alive even remembered the "Maybach" name? Insofar as so many car companies trade on brand equity -- how much brand equity was generated by a name few people had ever heard of? It would be like Audi trying to bring back the "Auto Union" name. Or Cadillac bring back the LaSalle nameplate. Daimler-Benz would have been better off developing an updated version of the 600 "Grosser" limousine which was, in it's day. simply the most amazing, complex, high-tech, luxurious, bad-ass rig of its time. The Maybach didn't really bring anything special to the party in its price range. It was a just a stretched S-class with more gingerbread.

Some would say that's exactly what the Maybach was. I've seen it referred to in multiple places as the "Mercedes Maybach." For what it's worth, I've read both the S-Class variant and the separate model stories but I don't know which is the latest.

That sort of thing has not had a negative effect on any other brands.

A lot of people just hope Mercedes-Benz comes back someday. It's been gone since about 1994. Today's M-B are half the price (and half the quality) of traditional Mercedes-Benz cars.

Half the price? They cost oin € at least as much as they cost in DM back in 1994 and that is about double.

Are you joking??? The quality maybe be a bit lower than in 1994 (most owners I know are quite happy, but the 2010 Merc of a friend of mine recently spend 5 months in the dealership, so faulty is it), the prices surely went up like a rocket and have never shrunk compared to the competition.

Go to a car show sometime... Mercedes feel like a Toyota now. And even Toyota don't feel as good as real Toyotas used to.
