Any Star Trek Fans?

Fri May 10, 2013 4:01 am

Tomorrow "Into the Darkness" opens here in Mexico, and I am truly psyched. I am half way major Star Trek fan, because I like one or two books, but enjoyed The Original Series and Next Generation and their related movies thoroughly. I know the true fans have seen and read everything related to the franchise.

So who here consider themselves fans?

When is the movie opening in your neck of the woods?

Are you going to see it?

P.S. there are some die hard fans that don´t like the modern rendition, but I say take it easy, they had to do something to increase its appeal, and whats more, using the pretext of an alternate reality gives leeway to make changes to the story. IMHO.

I consider myself a fan. Mostly of TNG and the original movies through Generations, though. I grew up with TNG, so that explains that. DS9 seemed cool too, but I never watched the whole series.

I honestly did not particularly like the rebooted Star Trek movie. Not that it was a bad movie, but it didn't have the same feel at all....don't know if I'll see this one.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

I am a fan, have been since TOS, and was excited when TNG came along. When TNG started I was in a city that did not get Fox and so I was part of a club where "a friend of a friend" taped the series and then we got together once a week and watched. Pretty funny, verrry geeky! Of the later series the one I really got into was VOY, not so much the others.

The movie opens this weekend here and I may see it Sunday.

I kinda watched TNG and the original series. DS9 was a snooze fest for me but I really loved Voyager. I have heard rumblings of a Voyager movie. I hope that one happens, but I am guessing not. Oh, well...

I've seen most of TOS, all of TNG (my favorite), 60% of DS9, most of VOY, and nothing of Enterprise. When I was a kid, I had a huge Star Trek toy/collectible collection in my room. Action figures, ships, playsets, etc. I had most of the smaller stuff up on shelves in my bedroom. One day, with no explanation the shelves came crashing down. Fortunately, nothing was damaged but I decided to keep the stuff in my closet at that point where it would be safe against falling. Now, those shelves are back up, and house most of my smaller die cast planes.

I cannot wait for the movie...and hope to actually have money to buy some of the toys/collectibles from this movie. I wasn't able to get any from the previous one.

I consider myself a fan, but never read any of the books nor did I finish the Enterprise series. That said, I am a bigger Babylon 5 fan. I did see everything that's considered canon of that series.

Released yesterday - looking forward to seeing it soon.

I quite enjoyed the 2009 reboot. I thought Zachary Quinto did a particularly awesome job playing Spock. I hope the sequel lives up to my own hype.

Need to check out the Audi commercial with him and Leonard Nimoy - too funny

What is the early word on Into Darkness ? Better than the first, just as good, somewhat disappointing?

I grew up with The Old Series and I think I've watched all episodes of all the series (except the animated series) over the years and of course the movies. Even so I simply like SF and wouldn't say I was a die-hard fan, but Star Trek is just among the better franchises in my view (and of course the most enduring one).

I actually still like the reboot movie quite a bit; It captures the essential spirit pretty well without being slave to the predecessors (which could not work anyway).

I'm a fan of Star Trek. I've seen all of the episodes of TOS, TNG, VOY and most of DS9 and a few of ENT. Likewise I've seen all of the movies. TNG is what I grew up with and it's my favorite I never miss an episode if it's on TV.

I somewhat like the new Star Trek movies. Great visuals something that all of the movies were missing and the cast really looks the part. My biggest gripe with it, is it just didn't feel like Star Trek. Some say, and I have to agree, that true Sci-Fi movies are gone forever. That is because the movies of old were cerebral and required more thinking through the story. Today everything has to have overly dark tones or action packed to the point where the story takes a back seat. The same can be said for the new Star Trek movies.

They destroyed the Vulcan home world right of the bat, they were a big part of the orginal canon. Now granted, a few survived but let's be real, if something like that were to really happen, it would take many lifetimes to bring the species back to some semblance of a civilization of their own. So, story wise, that pot is now empty.

Where are the aliens? Besides a few shots here and there of odd looking aliens it's but just a fraction of the space themed movie.

There is not enough of the Enterprise. I want to see the ship. Besides the brewery, I mean the engine room and glassy looking bridge we don't get to see really any of the Enterprise. Maybe more will be shown in the new movie.

The original canon was science driven and sometimes in your face about it. But the new movie series lacks alot of that science/techy stuff that made the TV series so cool, in my opinion.

My biggest gripe of all with the new movies is that Captain Kirk is no more than a cadet still in the Academy. So they expect us to believe any Captain worth his salt or who values their career (i.e. Pike) would allow a cadet, not yet graduated, to take command of a starship? Something that took a fairly long career and many dues to achieve. They got lazy with the story and needed a device to put Kirk into the captains chair. They also got lazy in their story telling, when the Enterprise dropped Kirk off on the ice planet that just so happens to have old Spock and Scotty. Against Star Fleet regs, because how could they know he wouldn't freeze to death or get eaten?

So while I find the new movie series entertaining I don't really consider it true Star Trek. I will go see the new one of course because I can't resist it being somewhat related to Star Trek.

I think so too.

I remember it took me a while to warm up to the Next Gen crew, but eventually I preferred TNG to TOS.

I do. I've been to several conventions and have seen every episode of every series of Star Trek ever made, most of which I have seen more than once. I got into it in the mid 1990s, and my favourite series is Deep Space Nine.

It opened yesterday (May 9) and I have already seen it once, and am likely to go and see it a second time.

I'm one of those that don't particularly like how they've done the "reboot". I'm a James Bond fan as well, and I'm not particularly pleased about the post-Casino Royale reboot either. I wasn't particularly keen on the previous Star Trek film because it changed too much from what The Original Series was like.

That said, I enjoyed Star Trek Into Darkness, because of the actors who did a splendid job playing the new Kirk, McCoy and Scott. I'm not fond of the previous film's Spock/Uhura relationship nor was I particularly pleased to see Kirk getting fast-tracked to Captain in the manner that he was. I shan't say any more than that lest I spoil it for others who haven't already seen it. All I will say is that I think this is a good film, and better than the previous one.

I'm a Sci-Fi fan, since I read my first Barjavel novel as a child.

However I didn't have a TV until teen years and then I couldn't watch it much, I saw a few old Star Trek episodes at that time, then the channel that showed it died and since then (the 90's) Star Trek has never been on free TV, which means that there is no significant following in France, and any reference to it in passing is sure to be met with blank stares (stargate is much more known and reruns still aired).

I've been thinking of watching the series for years but there are so many episodes it's overwhelming. I think I'll only consider ones made in the last 15-20 years and not the very old ones, but still, that's a lot.

I have seen most of the movies though, including the reboot one, and enjoyed it, but when you don't know the series you miss things I'm sure.

Interestingly enough I just learned about a "startrekism" yesterday, while watching another series, there was a joke made about a "redshirt", I didn't understand so I looked it up.

I dislike the new James Bond films as well, and I have seen all since Goldfinger. And the Star Trek reboot was a little strange, but I accepted it due to the "alternate reality" thing. The Spock/Uhura is cool because Spock upon loosing his mother, in this reality was faced with a situation that forced him to be more emotional. This of course changes the story significantly.

I am glad you say Into the Darkness was good. I will see this evening.

Start from the Original Series. It´s worth it. They are all on Netflix, there is no hurry. THere is nothing you really need to know to understand the current reboot.
