Royal Baby Boy Is Born

Mon Jul 22, 2013 1:14 pm

Sky News has gone on baby watch, as news broke this morning that Kate has gone into labor to give birth to the third in line to the British throne.

It's been fascinating watching the subtlety of it all—Charles is up in York, first at the railway museum, then at an abattoir. Her Majesty was caught on film yesterday saying she wished the baby would hurry up since she had a holiday to go on, LOL.

I think it's great that the happy parents-to-be chose not to find out the sex of the baby beforehand, and the birth will be announced in the traditional way, on an easel out in front of Buckingham Palace.

Best wishes to the expectant parents.

I like the 'republican' button on the Guardian site. BBC meanwhile has gone bonkers with 'Duchess in labour as world waits'. 'Nation' .. probably, but 'World'? Give me a break...

LOL the US version of the site has a button that says "Royalist?" and "Not a Royalist?" since "Republican" means other things here.

Great to watch. History in the making. Whilst news channels and people are going OTT I guess its something to bring the country together in another celebration.

After having lived in Republics I still very much favor the UK system and the Briitsh Monarchy. Long may it last.

I think it will be a Girl. Names could be Alexandra or Charlotte. Maybe even Diana.

Congrats to them. On the plus side, they have no lack of nannies and other domestic help. On the minus side, they won't get a minute's privacy.

Actually people around the world have been following this - even the news stations in the US are running the story full time. And that is something we can appreciate - not a court trial of some third rate numb, or political news (especially with the Frag draped T Party), or other daily crap.

Great news we can always enjoy and huge boom for souvenir makes & sellers. My daughter & son-in-law are over there on a trip and I've already told them to bring back some tea towels. Add to that $380 Billion boost to the economy.

Great news for the UK and I hope they celebrate to the fullest.

Unlike in the U.S., where childbirths are conveniently timed months in advance to make sure the doctor makes it to his or her tee time, in the UK they take a more natural approach.

That is not exclusive of the US btw - I remember seeing the statistics a few years back and in Portugal the number of c-sections on Fridays skyrocketed (way, way more than the 1/7th of all c-sections the statistics would otherwise suggest).

Saw a couple of name suggestions on FB today - George Michael as he took forever to come out...

Trayvon to piss off the Americans - that would succeed beyound their wildest dreams......

Anyway, congrats to Wills & Kate, hopefully the kid will be able to have as much of a normal life as possible without all the paparazzi surrounding his hot mum and every move he and she makes.

For comparison, Prince Christian who is 2nd in line to the throne of Denmark was 3.5 kilos when he was born in 2005.

And he had the advantage that everyone knew what he would be named - the only guesswork left to the media was what his "other" names would be (turned out to be Christian Valdemar Henri John).

In fact, I wonder if when he was born the doctor handed him a pair of scissors and had him pretend it was a ribbon at the opening ceremony for a new Tesco and cut his own umbilical cord so he can get a hang of what he will be doing for a living.

Indeed common misconception. All the charity work they do and just them being involved in such generates huge donations to many good causes and awareness. Many of them have worthwhile jobs. The money they generate for brand UK far outweighs any negatives.

I can't help but feel the artillery pieces used for the gun salutes lack a bit of oomph. Compare to, say, this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPhs-BH1O_s

Then again, the rate of misfire is probably much lower than the old 18th century cannons

That's a very quaint, old-fashioned idea of constitutional monarchy. The monarch doesn't "run the country" - the parliament does that - any more than the president of, say, Germany "runs the country."

Quoting MadameConcorde (Reply 44):

How can anyone predict that?

As in Ecclesiastes (in the bible), no one knows the hour of their passing and no one knows how long the present Queen will live, or her most immediate successors.

All that is known is the succession.

Maybe a bit but not enough to put me off him

I loved this bit when he put his Son in the car in the car seat. They did the tradition of being on the steps as his Mother Diana was with him all those years ago. Then went back in and came out in a very modern scene. As always some humor from William as he raised his hand and went phew after safely putting his son in the car. Thats what I like about him he is formal and honours tradition when he needs to but is very normal and his own character when he knows its appropriate. A very modern Royal couple.
